Walt Disney Organizational Chart of 1943

Alex

Larger image at Jerry Beck's Cartoon Research: Link

How did Disney (during the Walt Disney era) make movies? This organization chart from a 1943 booklet The Ropes At Disney showed that everything started with Walt himself, who focused on story and direction, and let others deal with the details ...

Satirical Maps of World War I

Alex

BibliOdyssey has a neat post about all sort of satirical maps of the First World War. This one above is the Satyrische Europa Karte Weltkrieg 1914 (Satirical Map of Europe in the World War 1914) by E. Zimmerman:

The Russian bear sprays insect repellant on the Russians and holds out his empty wallet while roaring “hunger.” Finland, chained to Russia, tries to cut itself free. The Russian is under fire from Austria and Germany. His (chamber)pot is full of victories. His uniform shows a tear in East Prussia and Lithuania.

The Austrian duly scratches the Serbs.
Rumania is at the ready.
Bulgaria is still wounded from the Balkan War.
The Turk awakes, he looks at his harem woman.
Norway and Sweden are neutral, Denmark supplies butter.

Italy has both feet in one boot and remains neutral.
The German pushes Belgium out of the way with the elbow and is at Franzi’s head.
Bordeaux becomes an asylum for the homeless.
The victories of the English and French are false, like the snakes that proclaim them. The Englishman will also soon know what 42ers are, etc. etc.

Artist Robert Bradford's Fire Sculptures

Alex

Photos: Robert Bradford

Artist Robert Bradford sculpts with fire: first he creates large sculptures out of wood, and then set them on fire to get the final (and transient) effect - this one is (was, I suppose) "Man with Something in Mind."

I think that that "something" is the realization that it's going to be set on fire! http://www.robertbradford.co.uk/3d+fires/ (www.robertbradford.co.uk)

What in the World is This Kid Drawing?
This ad, for Japan's Support the Children's Foundation, starts by showing a boy obsessively drawing sheets and sheets of only black. Was it mental illness ... or genius?

Tokyoflash Treasure Hunt #4

Alex

Yay! It's time for our fourth Tokyoflash Treasure Hunt.

For those of you who are new at this, it's an online treasure hunt where you can win a free watch of your choice, courtesy of the good folks at Tokyoflash. Here's how to play:

We'll give you 3 questions, for example:

1. What color is the "O" pebble in the Neatorama logo?
2. How many posts are on Neatorama’s homepage?
3. What’s the first insulting word in Neatorama’s article 10 Insulting Words You Should Know?

The answers (black, 30, frenchify) make a URL on this blog: if you string them together, you get http://www.neatorama.com/black-30-frenchify (go on, cut and paste this URL in your browser's address bar). Then all you need to do is enter your name and the Tokyoflash watch you'd like in the comment section of that page. The winner will be picked at random.

Easy, right? Well, let's get to it then. Here are the Tokyoflash Treasure Hunt #4 questions:

1. Tokyoflash recently added a new line of Nekura watches - which one of these watches has a blue and grey check background?

2. What is the last name of the artist who drew the Type Bike T-shirt on Neatorama's Online Store?

3. Asian hip-hop artist Perry Yu designed a watch for Tokyoflash that lets you keep the time in two timezones. The watch has been so popular that there's only one color choice left. What is the strap made of? (spell it out, mmkay?)

Visit TokyoFlash and Neatorama's Online Store to find out the answers, then put the answers together to make the URL (all words are lower case, separated by dash).

Ready? Set... Go! Good luck, guys!

Update 8/13/08 - A winner was picked at random (through random.org’s random integer generator). Congrats to Sarindipity who won!

Bush or Batman?
Sketch group Secret Pants went to National Park in Old City Philadelphia to see if people could tell the difference between quotes by President Bush ... or Batman!

Can you tell who said this:

We've climbed the mighty mountain and I see the valley below and it's a valley of peace.

Link

And the Winner is ... Arrrr!
Remember the Neatorama post about funny racehorse names? Well, this is a perfect example why they're named like that (sounds like the announcer is having fun!)

The Best Fight Scene Ever
From The Ghost (2001) movie, here is the best fight scene ever recorded in movie history!

YouTube Doubler: Twice the Fun!

Alex

Behold the YouTube Doubler ... because two YouTube clips playing at once is bound to be twice the fun of one clip playing by itself. Plus, almost everything is better when played next to a clip of a laughing baby.

Quote: Ernest Benn on Politics

Alex

"Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy."

- Ernest Benn, British publisher (1875 - 1954)

Trivia: ZIP Code 12345

Alex

The ZIP code 12345 belongs to the world headquarters of General Electric in Schenectady, New York.

Every year, GE gets thousands of mails from children who believed that it's only logical that Santa Claus has the ZIP code 12345.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!

Alex

Today's Thanksgiving Day and I'd like to take a minute to celebrate this wondefully non-denominational and non-commercial (well, except for having to buy a turkey!) holiday.

I have a lot to be thankful for. I'm thankful for my family - my wonderful and loving wife Tiffany (who's very pregnant now with our second child) and my demanding but cute little daughter Maddy.

I'm thankful for having loving and supportive parents. I'm thankful that my father is recovering well from a mild stroke earlier this year. It was a scary moment for us and it reminded me of how important family and friends are. (if you have a minute, please read this: Stroke Symptoms: Knowing These May Help Save Your Life)

I'm grateful for our troops. I know that the war in Iraq is unpopular, but whatever your political beliefs, I hope you'll be able to take a moment and separate the warriors from the war and recognize their service and sacrifice.

I'm thankful for Neatorama's authors, who help me enjoy reading this blog as much as I like writing for it. And lastly, I'd like to thank you, dear reader, for visiting this blog. Watching Neatorama grow continues
to be a joy for me - I hope you'll continue to visit.

Happy Turkey Day! (And what are you thankful for?)
