Having been thru. a few of these countries (get it count ries?) including Ameristan (sorry, just had to say it). Let me tell you this.

I have no idea.

My theories were:
-how dirty the money was
-how old the money was
-they wanted you to see and count it with them
-the physical size of the money ie dimension in the hand
-how many notes make up a useful amount of money to buy something
-whether they thought you were slipping a dud, recalled or counterfeit note in
-culture

As an aside: I always collected the cheapest paper note I could from each country I went to for keepssakes. I ended up with so many that I created some montages for my house. The bestest, pridest superest note of place right in the center of the thing?

ps: When I was in Florida we left our car for 30 seconds (all doors open) in a state park, enough time for a smash and grab of our pack of 5minute noodles by one of these things. It was so cute, didn't realise they were so dirty.

Did you know that if you lick a cane toad it'll trip out your mind. Their poison is an hallucinogen and powerful enough to kill a croc if he eats too many.

Cane toads have even evolved in Australia into a harder species to kill. Pandas? Give`m 20 years and they will be eating tourists and bigger than a polar bear.

I live near Balaclava (one of the Jewish areas) in Melbourne and I too often wonder how they wear they getup in the heat. Can't say I ever smelt their BO. I think they would be too proud for that, espec` on the Sabbath.

For what it is worth.

I picked up a variant of this 17 years ago in the mountains of Sulawesi (Indonesia) by swimming in the 1 star hotel pool (used to be a 5 star) and I couldn't resist the lovely open sewer pit (I mean pool). Got some in the mouth.....big moistake.

No pain, no ability to write letters (well this never occurred to me) but lots of itching. Cortisone helps but pills are bad news so lots of scrip high-cortisone cream (in Oz at least). In the last 12 months I have been going to a UV clinic (run by skin Doctor's) and they burn it out of you with high UV. Very effective.

It doesn't help my mind that two young Ozians females just died of sunbed UV exposure.

I hope my comments help somebody because until the last skin quack, none of them had any idea. They all called annular arrhythmia (which is quackian for 'no effin idea').
