Pop Culture Meets its Dark Side

French artist Pez imagines sinister versions of popular characters in this series of illustrations. These dark, shadowy reinventions, under the series name "Distroy," are surprisingly satisfying, in an irreverent way. See the artists' treatment of Disney, Simpsons, Pixar and other characters here.

Say Hey to the Car-Sized Ocean Sunfish

Image: Fred Hsu

This massive creature is known as the ocean sunfish. It weighs up to 2,200 pounds and can grow to be the size of a small car. The female of the species has the distinction of producing the most eggs of any vertebrate: three-hundred million.

The ocean sunfish eats only jellyfish and is harmless to humans. Among its few predators are orcas, sharks and sea lions. Scientists aren't completely sure why, but the sunfish frequently swims up from its feeding depths and lies flat on the surface.

Check out a video of the ocean sunfish below, and read more about the species in this article.

Transforming, Spinning Cocktail Cabinet

(Image: Yard Sale Project)

It's called the Cubrick. Does the name remind you of filmmaker Stanely Kubrick? It should. This cocktail cabinet design is inspired by his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's supposed to look like a monolith, except that it's red and filled with alcohol.

Ian Spencer and Cairn Young of the design firm Yard Sale Project in London conceive of it as "luxury furniture with a sense of theater." It smoothly opens, unfolds, and spins with a touch, moving much like the mystical flight scenes in the movie. It's priced starting at $7,300.

In This Mexican Village, Women Fistfight to Summon Rain

(Photo: Vice)

It is an ancient ceremony of mysterious origin. Every May, farmers in La Esperanza, Guerrero, Mexico, plant crops. The seeds need water to grow, so the villagers perform rituals that encourage rain.

This means collecting human blood in buckets and plowing it into the ground. The blood is the result of fistfights that the women have for the occasion. Rodrigo Cruz of Vice reports:

The villagers quickly began arriving in their dozens, forming a human perimeter while they waited for their out-of-town adversaries to reach the makeshift battlefield. Once the neighboring communities began to show up, women immediately started seeking out opponents and challenging them to a fight. The mothers and grandmothers, many of whom had been warriors in the past, got busy urging the younger generation of girls to get out in the ring, to split some skulls and spill some blood.

Once they were set on an opponent, the women faced each other, tying their hair up and removing rings or anything else that might get in their way. Then, often with their eyes closed, they threw the first punch. Occasionally they'd grab a handful of dirt to dry the sweat on their hands, or ask for a time-out to clean their bloodied noses, but they'd always carry on relentlessly tearing into each other, with cries of support resounding from all sides of the fight pit.

Mama Duck Goes Shopping, Takes Her Ducklings with Her

Lawson is a convenience store chain in Japan. Recently, a mother duck and her babies waddled into a Lawson outlet in Akashi City, Hyogo Prefecture. They eventually wandered out. And though Japan's convenience stores are legendary for having anything you could want, they didn't buy anything.

The Most Terrifying Music Video about a Living Pile of Potato Chips

This is "The Potato Chip Man." It is a song and music video by the Norwegian comedy duo Erlend & Steinjo. It consists of repetitions of a simple lyric:

Do you have more Potatochips?
No, we have not.

(Video Link)

He is a golem created out of potato chips in order to serve humanity's base drive for food. Yet he was also created with a soul that yearns for a deeper meaning for himself. The two men go on a quest for that meaning and additional potato chips.

Good Guy Mickey - There's A Murderous Mouse In Your House...

Good Guy Mickey by Lina Baby

There was something seriously wrong with the new batch of Good Guy Mickey dolls being shipped to stores nationwide, and parents were about to learn that toys aren't always child's play. It seems an angry programmer named Charles Lee Ray had written the code for the Mickey chip, and this cutting edge piece of technology caused the units to turn from tickle mode to terror mode whenever kids pulled their strings. As for why the Mickey Good Guy dolls came with a knife as an accessory, well that's anybody's guess!

Behold the horror of your favorite cartoon rodent gone wrong with this Good Guy Mickey t-shirt by Lina Baby, it's a clever way to show you're simply mad about the mouse!

Superfan Built His Own Mad Max Interceptor

Mad Max fever is sweeping across the globe, but for some the blood of the Road Warrior has been flowing through their veins for decades.

These fans who dream of driving across the wasteland, looking for trouble in a souped up vehicle bristling with weaponry and attitude or, better yet, hitting the highway in Max’s mighty Interceptor muscle car.

A diehard fan named Dale Walter decided to make his own post-apocalyptic dreams come true by turning a 1972 Australian Ford Falcon into the badass muscle car that first drove Max into our hearts back in 1979.

As Dale demonstrates in this video from Barcroft Cars, the Interceptor has a movie accurate horn and siren, a 351 Ford Cleveland engine that purrs and growls like a panther, and enough screen presence to star in its own Mad Max movie!

A Comedic Collision Of Vehicles From Pop Culture

Some of our favorite pop culture franchises feature a vehicle prominently in the storyline. Whether it’s the funky machine used to get to the next mystery or one super stylin’ way to go back in time, these amazing stories wouldn’t be the same without a cool vehicle.

Artist CJ Johnson has turned his love of vehicles from pop culture into a totally cool series of mashup illustrations that show what happens to the ride when fictional universes collide.

How One's Hometown May Affect Their Chances of Marriage

According to the New York Times, a "large new data set" exists that indicates how geography can indirectly affect one's odds of marrying. Due to the political leanings of geographic areas, the likelihood of marriage varies. For example,

"Spending childhood nearly anywhere in blue America — especially liberal bastions like New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Washington — makes people about 10 percentage points less likely to marry relative to the rest of the country. And no place encourages marriage quite like the conservative Mountain West, especially the heavily Mormon areas of Utah, southern Idaho and parts of Colorado."

Residents of the United States, see how your area fares in this context by viewing the charts and interactive maps here.
