Photographer Turns Corny American Archive Photos Into Something Uncomfortably Strange

The cardboard facade of cheesy Americana created by guys like Norman Rockwell is starting to crack and crumble, revealing the raw hatred, racism and xenophobia lurking beneath.

Which is why some of those old photos showing a carefree and happy America full of smiling, well adjusted and tolerant people just seem creepy knowing what we know today.

Photographer Weronika Gesicka has taken a collection of creepy  archive photos from the 50s and 60s, and remixed them into something even creepier, to fit the topsy-turvy America of today.

Weronika's remixed photos cause the viewer to wonder whether what we see in each scene is truth, or whether the truth is hidden behind a wall of denial:

“Who are, or were, these people in the images? Are they actors playing happy families, or real persons whose photos were put up for sale by the image bank? That is not fully clear”.

“I try to erase, as much as I can, the difference between an original image and my own alteration, creating a completely new history at the same time”.

“These photos, modified in various ways, are wrapped in new contexts: our recollections of people and situations are transformed and gradually blur”.

Scientists Have Come Up With A Way To Make Bread Out Of Cockroach Flour

It's hard for most Americans to imagine a time when there won't be enough wheat, rice or whatever with which to make flour, but should this apocalyptic scenario ever become a reality the roaches will run rampant.

And since cockroaches are the ultimate survivors just like humans we'll probably be forced to consider adding cockroaches to our daily diet.

That's why scientists Andressa Lucas and Lauren Menegon from the Federal University of Rio Grande in Brazil are working on a way to turn cockroaches into a flour that's actually better for us in some ways than wheat flour.

Their cockroach flour contains 40 percent more protein than wheat flour, and it's high in essential amino acids, lipids and fatty acids, making it a perfect fit for a balanced and healthy diet.

And while the cockroaches they used aren't the kind we see running around in the city this idea of turning insects into flour may work just as well with any other kind of insect- so they're studying whether flour can be made out of crickets and mealworms as well.

Build A Snowman - This One Appears To Have A Few Screws Loose

Build A Snowman by Brinkerhoff

If you wanna build a snowman then you'd better build him fast, because the frozen flakes of winter are about to melt into puddles of Olaf water and send that carrot nose afloat like a canoe across a pond. If you don't know how to build one just consult one of the many easy to follow charts on snowman building that Elsa created after her original Olaf build was such a big hit. But should you consider trying to build a snowman as big as ol' Marshmallow remember this- it takes an awful lot of fire to put down an unruly mountain of ice!

Keep cool all year round with this Build A Snowman t-shirt by Brinkerhoff, it's the well put together way to show love for animated features and the art of constructing people out of snow and twigs.

This Photoshop Wizard's Skills Are Most Impressive Indeed

Most of the digitally altered images you see online are simple composite images created by cutting subjects out of one photo and pasting them into another.

So when someone who actually knows how to use a digital tool like Photoshop to its fullest show off their skills the difference is night and day.

Florida Man Is Banned From Ordering Pizza After Being Arrested For Prank Calls

(Image Link)

Adults who make crank calls once in a while are just playing around, but an adult who uses five different phone lines to crank call pizza joints on a daily basis for three weeks straight is has a real problem with pizza!

The scraggly man in the photo above is Randy Riddle from Sebastian, Florida, and he has been convicted of crank calling several pizza parlors in his town to the point of felony harassment:

Over three weeks of watching Riddle, police say that Riddle placed numerous calls for pizza and then refused to pay, ordered pizza to fake addresses, or simply called the pizzerias to tell them their food sucked.

He allegedly used five different phone numbers to carry out his campaign of pizza terror and cost the restaurants at least $667.

While Riddle was doing all this, the 49-year-old also apparently made a number of harassing calls to the police department, city hall, and the Department of Health to complain about these same restaurants.

Now Randy isn't allowed to call pizza places anymore or his bail bond will be revoked and he will go straight to prison for one of the stupidest crimes of all time.

Rediscovering Radical 70s Fashion In San Francisco Attics

Many fashion trends come back into style years, if not decades, after they first debuted, but something tells me these handmade funkedelic hippie outfits from the 60s and 70s won't be making a comeback any time soon.

But that doesn't make them any less amazing to look at in photos, and it takes a little while to see and truly appreciate all the hard work that went into making some of the tackiest outfits ever knit.

Fashion designer Michael Cepress has spent decades collecting these handmade hippie masterpieces, like the legendary "doily suit" which was once worn by Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn:

Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn was a founding member of the radical San Francisco drag theater troupe The Cockettes — a group of pioneering hippie artists who experimented freely with LSD and wore brilliantly florid handmade outfits. Cepress made a coffee date with Scrumbly in San Francisco several years ago, and asked if he'd kept any clothing from his psychedelic heyday. Scrumbly probed the depths of his closet and, to everyone's surprise, found his iconic "doily suit," a trio of pastel crocheted garments (flared pants, jacket, vest) made with couture-like skill and creative vision.

Michael is now sharing his collection at the exhibition "Counter-Couture: Handmade Fashion in an American Counterculture", showing at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York through August 20th.

KFC Creates Fake Food Blogger To Introduce The "Clean Eating Burger"

The way fast food companies use social media to advertise has changed quite a bit over the last few years, and these days it's not uncommon to find companies like KFC trolling for laughs via Tweets.

But making up a fake food blogger just to troll the "clean eating" set has earned KFC UK & Ireland the award for "the most surreal social media campaign of 2017 (so far)".

"Clean eating fanatic" Figgy Poppleton-Rice was brought to life so she could introduce the world to the KFC "Clean Eating Burger":

Mmmm, spiralised chicken breast and the other white meat- cauliflower! Figgy's "burger" is one of the many "recipes" shared on her website, and people who randomly stumble upon Figgy's website or social media accounts may have no idea she's connected to KFC in any way.

But anyone who actually tries one of her "recipes" is gonna be in for a real treat!

Last Night's Other Oscar Flub You Might Not Have Heard About

By now you may have already heard about how Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey at last night's Academy Awards and announced La La Land as the Best Picture winner despite the fact that Moonlight actually was supposed to take home the title. But that wasn't the only embarassing mistake at the event -the in memoriam segment also featured a picture of someone who is very much still alive.

Australian film producer Jan Chapman was shocked to see her image used in the reel rather than the image of her collaborator, Janet Patterson, who died in October. On the upside for Chapman, she is not only alive and well, but also getting a lot of publicity from the mistake. You can read more about the producer at Heavy.

As a side note, If you haven't see the Best Picture mixup yet, you can see the whole trainwreck here (skip to the 1:50 mark to see the frantic faces in the background as the awards staff tries to fix the mistake):

Samurai Turtle- Leonardo - He'll Be Back In Time For Sushi Pizza

Samurai Turtle- Leonardo by Chet Phillips

The TMNT look cool in any era and while wearing any clothes, including goofy trenchcoats and fedoras, but they look especially cool while wearing a full suit of samurai armor from Feudal Japan. This may seem strange considering they were trained to be ninjas, and samurai generally don't get along with the shinobi, but what's in a name? The ninja turtles were trained to stomp the Foot clan and fight for honor and justice, so the samurai shell kinda fits. And besides, they're teenagers and mutants, so it's only natural that they'd like to cosplay!

Show the world what the really old school TMNT looked like with this Samurai Turtle- Leonardo t-shirt by Chet Phillips, it's less cowabunga and more Kawasaki.

Some Of The Least Effective Weapons In History

People have tried to use everything imaginable as a weapon, but the most effective weapons are honed until man can kill, maim or destroy with the least amount of effort.

This deadly factor is the key to a weapon being considered highly effective, but it also makes it easy to tell when a weapon literally can't cut the mustard.

But before double-barreled cannons or dogs carrying anti-tank mines can be declared ineffective they must be tested, and weapon testing is often a deadly business.

This animated history lesson from Second Thought walks you through some of the worst weapons ever devised, like the ridiculous looking Tsar Tank, the big wheeled joke of WWI.

This Girl's Selfies Show What It's Like To Be A Third Wheel

Being a third wheel in your best friends' relationships really sucks, and yet the couples don't see it because they're too busy being all lovey dovey to care about your loneliness.

Third wheels need something to do while their couple friends canoodle, so this lonely gal started taking selfies to show off how hard she's third wheelin' it with her best friend and her BFF's BF, err, fiancee.

She calls herself Third Wheel Extravaganza for good reason- because her friends make her feel like a third wheel even when they're on the phone with their boyfriends!

A Classic Clip Featuring Nirvana Reacting To Critics Of In Utero

People from all walks of life listened to Nirvana in the 90s, and yet it seems some of the fans brought in by the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" sound didn't dig In Utero.

In 1993 MTV News visited St. John's University and asked students to take home Nirvana's In Utero on CD and give it a listen, then they met up with the students the next day to get their reaction.

A little while later Nirvana stopped by the MTV studios to react to the students reacting to In Utero, and...man, life was so much simpler back then, wasn't it?

Which One's The Doppelganger?

When a Doppelganger emerges from the shadows and attacks the Original they've replicated that person's world is turned upside down, and they're forced to fight themselves for survival.

Then Somebody Else shows up and tries to tell the difference between the two, and the whole thing turns into a game of "Pick me! No, pick me!" until one gets dropped.

But, as this Maximumble comic shows, if the Somebody Else who shows up is a total bore then death by doppelganger it is!

Can Buzzfeed Guess Where You Live Based on What Show You Like?

Where you live may not determine what you like, but there's no denying that people who live in certain areas tend to like some shows more than people who like other shows. For example, the map above shows where Duck Dynasty is most popular. The New York Times did a whole article with these charts, revealing trends among TV viewers across the country.

It's hard to say if this BuzzFeed quiz is based on the Times article, but they do use a lot of the same shows and the results were at least accurate for me. So was the quiz able to guess where you live based on your favorite shows or are you an anomaly? And while we're at it, did the NYT article line up with your tastes?

Delicious Restaurant Creations Made With Girl Scout Cookies

Samoa cupcakes? Thin Mint cheesecake? Yes please! And these are only a few of the amazing-looking desserts made with Girl Scout cookies that our own Miss C rounded up for this great Mental Floss article.

While many of the treats are what you'd expect -like the cupcake or cheesecake, a few of them are really creative. The chocolate peanut butterfly above uses Tagalongs and looks like a work of art. But the strangest creation on the list might just be the Girl Scout lemonade ricotta gnocchi.

How many of these brilliant creations would you eat?
