There Are Downton Abbey and Duck Dynasty Branded Wines

Novelist Brian J. Noggle snapped this photo and wrote:

Last night, my beautiful wife and I went to the wine shop.

What did I get? What television told me to.

They're real! The British serial drama Downton Abbey and the American reality TV show Duck Dynasty have their own branded wines.

Downton Abbey wines include a claret and a blanc. Duck Dynasty wines include a pink moscato, a chardonnay and a mixture of zinfandel, merlot, cabernet and sauvignon.

The last one is called Triple Threat Red Blend. How does it taste? Wine critic Jon Thorsen offers this review:

The 2011 Duck Commander Triple Threat Red Blend begins with lots of ripe fruit plus caramel and coffee aromas along with a bit of spice. Tasting reveals more ripe fruit, lots of chocolate and caramel notes along with some cherry cola and spice. It's all wrapped up in a smooth texture with soft tannins. It ends with more jammy ripe fruit, good length and sweet oak notes. This wine hits the inexpensive red blend bullseye -- if you're a fan of Apothic Red, Cocobon or the Murphy-Goode Homefront Red you'll love it!

In the comments, suggest what other television wines should taste like.

The Empire State Building Printed with Bicycle Tires

Could you ride straight up the side of the Empire State Builiding in New York City? Probably not, but you could use the tires to print an image of it. Thomas Yang, a creative director in Singapore, designed this clever print. It's called "The Cyclist's Empire."

Yang runs 100 Copies, an art studio that produces precisely 100 copies of every print that it designs, including this one.

Preparing Your Child the Geek Way

(Lunarbaboon)

From the very beginning, parenting is a long process of letting go of your child. Your task is to prepare him/her for an independent life.

It was only after Luke's surrogate parents, Yoda and Obi-Wan, had died that he was finally ready to face his greatest challenge. So it must be for all children. Prepare them for a life without you.

Midnight Regrets

(Minimumble/Chris Hallbeck)

It's definitely the best time. It's also the most convenient. It's not like you were going to get any sleep, anyway.

That thing that you said to your boss at work. Did he take it in worst possible way, completely unaware of your intentions? Did you make a mistake in that report that you emailed out? Remember that one time in the sixth grade when you made a fool of yourself in the middle of class? Think about that one for a while.

Geeky Kimono Dresses

The TARDIS from Doctor Who

Link's Costume from The Legend of Zelda

Ed Elric's costume from Full Metal Alchemist

Amanda Marin is a fashion designer with a geeky soul. She makes frilly costumes for every franchise. She's especially well-known for her pinafores, such as the Pikachu pinafore that we posted two years ago.

Lately, she's been experimenting with a design that she calls a kimono dress. You can see more of her kimono dresses here.

Finally! Cup Holders for Umbrellas

(Photo: Morella)

British designers Andrew Tan, Ross Malcolm and Jordan Schlipf invented the Morella, a cup holder for umbrellas. It pivots, so that as you turn the umbrella up or down, the drinks stay stable and won't spill. They've designed two models, one to carry just one drink and the other to carry two drinks.

Malcolm came up for the idea while standing in the rain outside of a pub. He held a drink in one hand and an umbrella in the other. There had to be a better way to manage the task. So he got together with other designers and made cardboard models.

They hope to eventually sell the single model for $8-17 and the double from $13-20.

The Clubfoot Sandwich is a Mug of Sandwich

(Photo: The Staggering Ox)

The Clubfoot sandwich is an ingenious approach to sandwich design. I don't know who invented it, but the Clubfoot is trademarked by The Saggering Ox, a restaurant chain in the American northwest with most locations in Montana.

The chefs bake loaves in whole tin cans, then hollow out the centers. They then fill the cavities with different ingredients. Beyond that, the preparation process is mysterious. Staggering Ox employees have to sign non-disclosure agreements in order to prevent details from becoming widely known.

The ingredients added to the Clubfeet, however, are public knowledge. The Nuke is composed of ham, turkey and roast beef as well as cheddar, Swiss and provolone cheeses. The Saint Helens erupts with 5 different meats and 5 different cheeses.

I'd love to eat a Reuben sandwich made this way.

Congratulations to Zach Weinersmith on the Birth of His First Child

Zach Weinersmith is the artist responsible for Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal, a funny and often* intellectually demanding daily webcomic.

His wife, Kelly Weinersmith, recently gave birth to their first child. So they're now one up in the genetics arms race.

In the comments, leave Zach and Kelly ill-conceived and poorly-reasoned parenting advice.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Is Now an Actual Soup

In 1993, motivational speakers Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen published Chicken Soup for the Soul, a collection of true stories to inspire hope in readers. The premise of the title is that a good story is an emotional comfort food, like chicken soup is to many Americans when they feel ill.

The book was a runaway bestseller. The two men founded a publishing company to produce numerous sequels and branded products, such as dog food and crossword puzzles.

Inevitably, it would be time to make actual chicken soup branded as Chicken Soup for the Soul. Jennifer, a reader at The Impulsive Buy, spotted these packages of it at a Brookshire's.

Balloon-Lifted Flying Dreadlocks

Redditor hdubs writes, "My friend attached balloons to his dreads and then cut them off yesterday." He sliced them for the World's Greatest Shave, a charity that helps people with blood cancer. That's a great cause, but this would also be a fine way to recreate the movie Up.

The Pinwheel Was a Rocket-Powered, One-Person Helicopter Backpack

(Photo: US Navy)

Gilbert Magill called his invention the Pinwheel. At 150 pounds, it was not quite up to Inspector Gadget's standards, but it was a start in the right direction.

The aircraft was a tip jet helicopter, meaning that there were little rockets at the ends of the rotor blades. They shot our a mixture of hydrogen peroxide, which instantly turned into steam and oxygen. Here's a video showing the Pinwheel in flight.

Rockall--A Tiny Island Claimed by Four Nations

Rockall is a tiny island—a rock, really—in the north Atlantic Ocean. Ireland, the UK, Denmark and Iceland all lay claim to it. For more than 60 years, those nations have been locked in a quiet struggle for possession of it.

The island is a volcanic plug that is only 764 square meters in area. It would be almost impossible to settle. So you might think that this dispute would be a minor issue, but it’s not. That’s because international treaties give nations sovereign control over the use of waters and continental shelves off their coasts. What’s at stake in the Rockall dispute is not a bit of almost inaccessible land, but 422,000 square kilometers of water--and the apparently substantial natural gas resources beneath the ocean floor.

(Map by Bjarki)

In 1810, Britain attempted to lay the first claim with a Royal Navy expedition to the island. A similar 1955 expedition placed a plaque and the Union flag on the island and claimed it in the name of Queen Elizabeth II. An act of Parliament in 1972 affirmed the island’s legal status as far as the United Kingdom was concerned.

Huge Model Train Moves in an Endless Spiral Loop

It's hypnotic. Just start watching and feel at one with the train and the universe.

James Risner hooked up this HO scale train with 141 cars and 9 locomotives. They move beautifully and endlessly along the track. It's mesmerizing. I can see why Rev. Lovejoy found them so appealing.
