When there are fast, reliable subway systems up into the mountains and wilderness near my house (gods forbid!), then I'll take the subway. Until then, I'll opt for the most fuel-efficient and convenient vehicle I can get.

There are plenty of extreme races. This is a nice list of marathon-distance ones that fit some definition or another of most extreme (even if it's most elvis impersonators).
Ultras are a different beast. We can have a list of extreme races (at any length) later.

The Big Picture is always great, but this one is particularly awesome.

So what is this thing between Neatorama and Tokyoflash? Why the weird adoration?

OK, so let's say, against all odds, the US *did* fake the landings. Hollywood production values, etc, etc. Who could and would tell (besides the thousands of people actually in-the-know, of course)?
The Soviets, who were hotly on our tails in the space race, were undoubtedly tracking Apollo 11 on radar and optically the entire way there and back. If it had been faked, you can bet they would have called us on it.

Gorgeous! I don't care if it's viral marketing or not, there's some astonishing physics caught in these shots; everything from surface tension to optics.

Shocking, but honestly not that much worse than what we have today... with the obvious difference that today's procedures are done under anesthesia. Ever seen the saw used to remove casts or the vacuum used to extract babies? Scary looking indeed.

Feynmann explaining the train wheels is fascinating! It brings home the fact that people were just as clever back in the day as they are now, maybe more clever.

I've seen the pictured ceiling style in other cathedrals as well, in particular St. Bavos church in Haarlem. It must be something about the Gothic architecture.
Beautiful gallery. I, for one, frequently notice the ceiling. Airports tend to be especially good.

Brilliant, but Leonard Bernstein probably wouldn't have the first clue as to why this is funny.

Are you and economist? Then why does it matter what you think?
