You know you're an über-fogey if you get slapped down by Lileks. That's a bit like watching your maternal and paternal grandfathers arguing about something.

Sean Combs is one of the people I tend to point to to prove the adage that ambition and drive is far more important than talent. Or intelligence, for that matter.

@sigh: actually, "government handouts" in the sense of a strong social safety net actually facilitate social mobility, a metric the US scores very low in, I'm sorry to say.

I was gonna come into this thread all cynical and anti-theist, but it turns ut I didn't need to. Thanks guys! (No, I'm being neither facetious nor sarcastic, that really made my morning)

Well, of course it sticks in your head; it's insipid. That's why I can never understand people who use "catchy" as a positive term. Catchy is incredibly easy to write and annoying to anyone with any sense of musical taste.

Someone with such a loose grasp of punctuation (there really shouldn't be a comma after "in use") and sentence structure (as noted, a cell phone is hardly insolent) who also uses excessive capitalization has a lot of nerve implying that others might need to check a dictionary for two fairly common words.

The reason it's not a real sport or game is because Rowling's rules are idiotic. It's all about the snitchgrab and everything else is entirely incidental. The other players might as well sit down and wait for that to happen. An outcome that doesn't end with the snitchgrabber winning the game is a one in a thousand event, at BEST -not least since there is no incentive to grab it if it means you do not win.

The reason the Swedish dance bands ended up looking as kooky as they did was for tax reasons. They could only deduct stage clothing as an expense if those clothes were clearly not to be worn privately, thus the more outrageous the clothes were, the easier it was to convince the Swedish IRS of their deductability.

But for all that the clothes were insane, the music was (and still is) incredibly bland. It's as if someone had taken c-grade wedding bands as the template for an entire musical genre. Absolutely hideous and incredibly popular (although these days, they tend to dress less ostentatiously - I guess tax law changed).

Analog TV will be no more? Where? Analog has been dead where I live for over a year. Where others live, it might not be dead for years to come.

If you mean "in America", you should remember to write that when you're on the web, seeing as the two first w:s in your own URL don't refer to it being a local concern.

Seems about par for the course; duplicitous, dumb and without concern for others. If it weren't for having seen even dumber McCain/Palin voters, I'd say this was an Obama plant.

It's odd hwo those that slam The Simpsons seem to be people who never watch it. Several episodes duroing last years season rivalled the supposed heyday in cleverness, intelligence and just plain fun. The one with Alan Moore, Art Spiegelman, Dan Clowes and Jack Black was especially nice. Yes, the Mike Scully years were pretty dreadful (season 9-12) and it took a few years for Al Jean to turn the ship around, but as far as I'm concerned, apart from a few bum episodes here and there, The Simpsons is a good as it ever has been, sometimes better.

Also, the above clip would be a bit funnier if electronic voting isn't open to massive fraud and no democratic Western nation should allow that kind of insecure system to decide who wins an election.
