Oh wow. I just went over to Youtube and watched the first few minutes. Had to shut it off. If I'd seen this as a kid, I never would have developed my Star Wars obsession and subsequent, crippling Harrison Ford crush. Harvey Corman? BEA ARTHUR?! And Chewie's repellent "family"... crap, I need a drink.
On second thought, it's very odd that Lucas disowned this. The Ewoks were just as bad.
Don't forget The Dalles, Oregon, a small (and miserable, by many accounts) town on the Colombia Gorge not all that far from Portland. Here's what I know about The Dalles: it's home to the sick, fantastic comic artist John Callahan, and there is no good explanation for its name. Please correct me, Oregonians.
I knew a woman who volunteered with a bat rescue group. She had, among others, a little brown bat which couldn't be released back to the wild for some reason. It clung to her collar, and at feeding time, it reached up with a tiny claw and chirped for attention. It was as sweet and interactive as any cat or dog. Witness that behavior, and you'd never again label bats as less than adorable.
The DMV issues International Drivers Licenses to travelers, yet there is no requirement to learn the languages of countries visited. Not much language proficiency is necessary in order to navigate roads... this is why road signs have internationally recognizable symbols, shapes, colors, lights, etc.
It may appear that these birds are "dumb", but albatrosses have evolved to eat (and feed to their young) squid, fish eggs and such, which float on the ocean's surface. Plastics have been a part of this flotsam for less than a century. These birds may well be extinct soon, all thanks to plastic. Please be careful with your lighters and pop bottle lids... trash doesn't have to be dropped near the water to make it into a bird's stomach.
"Many people think that the biggest source of pollution in the oceans is oil spilled from ships, but most marine pollution is litter that starts out on land... albatrosses fly hundreds, sometimes thousands of miles in search of food for their chicks. They look for squid and fish eggs floating on the surface of the water. Unfortunately, plastic floats, and Laysan albatross are particularly attracted to it. They eat it, mistaking if for food, then they fly back to the nest and feed bottle caps, lighters, fishing lures and other pieces of plastic to their young. The chicks starve to death, with stomachs full of plastic."
That POOR WOMAN. Yes, that's how many Americans were taught to eat... and look how enormous it's made this young woman, who seems very sweet. Agreed, if this were made with yogurt and/or low-fat mayonnaise it would be just fine. Maybe someone should send her a hint so she can live to 30. And I'm going to go throw out those cookies I just bought.
Moderator, were you thinking of macaroni and cheese? I have never had macaroni salad with cheese in it.
Most animal farming is heartless from start to finish -- it's good to see compassionate attention to details like the comfort of runt piglets (sows often have more babies than they have teats for; the weak ones starve painfully). We all die someday; I'd rather have a relatively nice life with slaughter at the end of it than utter misery throughout.
This is probably an article for collection by sociologists, which will help to illustrate the mutually uncomfortable links between Southern Cracker and Southern Black cultures.
Wow, amazing!! And even more amazing considering the usual screening material for Korean construction sites is flannel blankets.
Okay, I have no idea what they really are, but here in Busan I've seen buildings under construction (and even holes in the pavement) covered simply with long sheets of flimsy pastel-striped fabric. A friend of mine saw a scooter delivery guy drive right into a hole that way.
