dont's Comments

Really had to stop reading the comments after a while, but hey. When we heard "that one" in the debate, my boyfriend and I both laughed because we knew it was kind of a ridiculous thing to say. If I hadn't seen the link that Geekazoid posted, I would have just thought it was kind of a slip, but it seems like it's not. It's still stupid, and not nearly the worst thing to come out of either party. I don't think it's racist (unlike some of the comments on here "Americans and Jews" um...hi...some of us are both). I hate cheap shots and spin, and politics is full of. I agree with whoever said they should have been arguing back and forth, that's what debate IS. Obama's got my vote, but I really wish they could just get down to it and tel us what they really mean instead of having to placate EVERYONE.

That is a ridiculous way to interpret and package this study. The headline is incendiary, designed to grab attention. Thinking does not make you fat, and it really doesn't read like that's what they were even trying to study. How much you think might be related to how much you eat, but there's no reason that would make you fat. Lack of exercise and food choices make a difference, among other things. The way scientific studies are presented in the media is usually faulty. What do you want to bet that the Telegraph doesn't have a science editor on staff?

Thanks for this link. I am dealing with psychophysiological insomnia right now. It always happens when I have to get up early for work (now that I just started school again after years away, it's even more intense). I psych myself out, get itchy all over and get all weepy and freaked out because I'm afraid I won't be able to function for the next day. I end up getting out of bed and usually staying up until after the sun is up and getting a couple of hours tops after that. It's happened on and off for years. Seems like something I should be able to talk myself out of, but it's just the opposite. Infuriating.

Growing up I watched a LOT of TV (pre-internet). In college, I didn't watch because I couldn't afford cable, and was too busy anyway. Then I moved in with my boyfriend, who didn't have one because he can't pull himself away from even the most insipid stuff and consciously didn't want to be like his dad. We got basic cable eventually (my idea), and just hated most of the formulaic programming and the ads, God the ads. In high school they taught us how radio and tv were initially invented as advertising vessels, I've never forgotten that. My dad is an ad man, so I always tried not to bite the hand that fed me, but it's just sick how pervasive, flat out misleading and pandering it is. Anyone who loves tv, that's cool, just be rationally skeptical about what you see in between. Protein in your conditioner won't do anything to your hair, your hair is dead skin.

Now we watch some select stuff (The Office, Project Runway, How It's Made), but it's very hard not to get sucked into watching hours at a time while criticizing it at the same time. He built a free DVR, so we don't watch commercials or get sucked into whatever is on next. Anytime we watch tv in real-time we can't stand the ads anymore, so we just don't.

Soon the internet will encompass TV, right? I can't really get all uppity about not watching TV since I spend hours online, but I do think choosing my own interactive content is better than watching whatever programming is on the box in front of me, and at least here I can usually ignore the ads. I also like the fluidity of links, especially on wikipedia (grain of salt there, too).

Oh, and I don't think some of the more incendiary comments on here are worth replying to. Trolls are everywhere. Also ted: Your line about dry wit was very funny.

Ted, I disagree, too. She didn't go there to get thrown out. She was wearing a shirt to run an errand, a shirt to educate others and was discriminated against (very badly, in my opinion) for it. The opportunity to educate MORE people fell into her lap. I hope she uses the publicity to her advantage, and she absolutely deserves to win a suit if she files one. That would not be a frivolous lawsuit, it would help educate about discrimination. The fact that sharing this story publicly opens her up to MORE discrimination (see some of the comments here and multiply) and she's doing it anyway doesn't say "loves to be victimized". It tells me that she's sacrificing her personal safety to help her cause.

Yeah, finally a family that isn't looking for someone to blame. Too bad the author of the article is exactly the opposite. Those ads are obnoxious, but obviously not "deadly". I guessed he was an epileptic from the headline.

Ha, years ago my dad brought home a bottle of the real stuff with wormwood and all (and a bottle of cannabis vodka) from Prague. I cracked open the absinthe and drank it without the sugaring process, which was just disgusting. I wanted to get past the regular drinking experience and the demons, and onto the euphoric point that Oscar Wilde described, so I pressed on. I didn't see any fairies, but I DID scribble every thought that came into my head onto paper. When I woke up the next day, the page was covered in illegible ramblings. So that was pretty cool.

This year, my dad served my boyfriend a GIANT glass from the same bottle. With sugar, this time. They got drunk, and it numbed their tongues, but that's it. I've never tried the legal kind.

Oh, I really hope they don't give in. I am so sick of companies bending to the desires of special interest groups.

Rachael Ray's Dunkin' Donuts commercial was yanked because she was wearing a scarf that looked like a kaffiyeh and "symbolized terrorism." That is RE-FUCKING-TARDED. Get it together people!

We don't need to ban donut commercials, or news stations. If CNN reports about Britney Spears, if America's Funniest Home Videos is STILL ON an if Fox News and Tila Tequila have audiences...okay. Let us have an alternative. Not everyone is into that, and we're Americans, too. That kind of censorship is exactly what this country is supposed to oppose! Al- Jazeera is NOT going to make anyone a terrorist, and anyone who thinks it will seems to misunderstand the situation severely. How can anyone cave to that? Squeaky wheels don't always DESERVE the grease, but nagging is effective. There are a lot of things to love about this country, but morons with money sure seem hell bent on making it suck for the rest of us. Come on, Burlington. You're so progressive (and pretty, I've been there), don't pull it!

I don't care if it's gross. It's pretty amazing to see something that happens in my body every month looking totally different than I'd thought. Very interesting, doesn't need a warning as far as I'm concerned.
