1) Using BMI as a health guide is ridiculous. It was written in 1850 to chart the average Belgian's weight to height during that period. EVEN AT THE TIME, IT WAS A STATISTICAL CHART AND WAS NEVER INTENDED TO SUGGEST WHAT PEOPLE "SHOULD" WEIGH. Agreed, some standard should be reached, but the BMI chart says everyone should be "heroin chic" anorexics. So why does it remain the standard? Because it allows insurance companies to have higher premiums, why else.

2) Talk to any overweight person (especially if they're over 30) and they'll most likely tell you how they once lost weight, eventually gained it back plus some, and were never able to lose it again no matter how hard they tried. Honestly, if it was a simple question of "self control" or whatever else people who have been slim all their lives imagine it to be, don't you think everyone would be slim? Would there be a billion dollar diet industry that fails again and again to actually help people?

This is extreme "big brother," "forced nanny-state" - pick your term - idiocy, merely designed to rake in a few more bucks with the lie that if you have to pay, it's your own fault.

I'm not a smoker, but it's always amazed me how the (U.S.) government preaches the evils of marijuana, yet happily allows TV commercials to try and convince people that they need anti-depressants, and to talk their doctor into prescribing them. (Yes, there are people out there who need medication, but the pharmaceutical companies aren't paying $100k and up for a commercial spot out of public interest.)

To Miss Universe & Mr. Pumpernickel: We all get enough advertising throughout the day - no one wants nor deserves to have their home lives interrupted. Just because I have a phone does not mean you have the right to annoy me with it. If you call to interrupt my life to try to sell me something, you deserve everything you get.

I used to take so much joy in messing with telemarketers. Unfortunately, now they all use dialing machines that call me, and then tell me that I should call them (like that's going to happen.)

There was one major difference - when they returned to "Classic Coke," they switched from cane sugar to corn syrup - so it wasn't really a return to the original recipe at all. (Cane sugar sodas are much sweeter)

They think they're protecting their kids, but it's going to hurt the kids when they enter the real world and find no one is giving them trophies and hugs to celebrate their mediocrity.

Obama managed to run a positive campaign while Hillary tried to use the smear/victimization tactics that won her a senate seat in 2000. Wouldn't it be great if both Obama & McCain kept it positive through to the election and spared us all the usual temper tantrums? I know it's a pipe dream, but it would be nice...

Yeah, I'm with "sick" on this one. I live in Queens, NYC. While I take public transportation everywhere I go (because I personally hate driving in the city) I do own a car. I look out of my window, and I can count 31 cars in view. Out of those cars, 1 could be called an SUV (a Hummer) and there are 5 minivans. The rest are all small cars.

Wouldn't it be fun if Americans lumped all Europeans together, took all of their economic/social problems, and blamed it on the lifestyles of all their people? Wait, that would be called intolerance or nationalism or elitism - attitudes everyone in the world are allowed to have about Americans, but Americans are considered evil if they feel the same way.

The reason for oil prices rising is simple: the war in Iraq. America is $165 billion dollars in debt from this misadventure, so the value of the dollar worldwide has fallen. Meanwhile, a new market has opened up in China. Same supply + more demand = rising prices.

So why are Americans so angry? (Besides the fact that more and more of our tax $ are being poured down the drain in this war with no end in sight) Well, we have are own oil reserves, but we refuse to drill them. Any attempt at building more refineries creates a NIMBY response (And bizarrely, so do wind farms.) Nuclear Power plants are feared and shunned, when they've been proven to be safe. While the eyes of the world are turning to ethanol as an alternative fuel supply (not to mention increasing food prices,) American farmers are STILL being paid by our government to NOT GROW CROPS. (Sorry, Bush haters, but I have to agree with him on that one.)

So while Americans are supposed to see everyone in the world as an individual, as people just working and trying to get by, the knee-jerk reaction from the assholes of the world is that Americans are greedy, that we're all driving gas guzzling SUVs, that we're all driving half a mile to go to the store to buy one loaf of bread, all kids of unimaginable crap. Bullshit. Everyone I know is scared of losing their jobs. We may be making ends meet, but we're fighting to keep it that way. I ask any of the people who spew this bs to please give me an example, from a person they've actually met. If they can find such a person, then look around their town, and tell me what percentage of the local population that person represents.

And by the way - if someone DOES own an SUV - SO WHAT? If they can afford it, and they want to pay $150 a fill-up, well, that's their own right. How it makes them "greedy" or "selfish" is beyond me.
