I have to provide their work environment (equipment, desk space, phone, computer, lab space, etc). I have to have insurance to protect them (and me). Real staff have to give up their time (and productivity) to train/guide/supervise the Interns. Interns break/waste things. Interns fubar production runs. (Some) Interns steal expensive things. Finally, I have to spend my time writing reviews on the intern performance.

Unpaid seems like a fair trade.

If we had to pay them - we'd drop them in a heartbeat. No place on our corporate charter does it say "non profit".

A million seems pretty light for a NY lawsuit.

Cops/City Admin's/School Admin's (which of course are mostly taught in public schools) are stupid, and without sufficient zeros on the paperwork won't take the lesson seriously.

Rule #1: - don't be a tourist in countries still living in the stone age, and above all, avoid places that are governed by the ruling mythology instead of a real government.

Spend your money in smart, civil, friendly, modern, countries with a real justice system (not based on 2 year old witnesses) and fair penalties for actual crimes not imagined moral issues.
