Evilbeagle, I told my husband about your comment last night and why it made me laugh. He reads Dlisted too, so he had already seen the story there. I repeated the phrase verbatim and then said, "Not that that reminds me of anyone I know." :)
Look, my minor was fine arts and illustration, so I can appreciate that art gets made out of some strange things, but this just hits my "ewww" button repeatedly.
Okay, this is kind of an ephemeral association, but the second version of the Laughing Cow really, really reminds me of one of the corporate sponsors of the Tour de France as it existed in "The Triplets of Bellville." There was a brand of cheese that was endorsed by a giant, ruddy Valkyrie who just looked an awful lot like the Laughing Cow. I wonder if anyone else sees it.
Evilbeagle, "He is 19 years old and has enough hair between his legs to either contribute or get out."
This made me laugh. It is a turn of phrase that is both grotesque and incredibly apt. This is the point I keep trying to make to my husband about the 21-year-old who still lives with us: opted out of college (and honestly isn't really college material); minimum-wage job; only expense is his car payment (lemon from a tote-the-note dealership); spends all of his time and money chauffering three little high-school-age girlfriends (not in the romantic sense) around wherever they want to go, taking them out to eat all the time; doesn't do a lick of housework; doesn't contribute to household expenses or groceries (but has the appetite of a baby werewolf)...in short, consumes without contributing. Doesn't make enough money to get his own place. Husband is seemingly unconcerned. Noelegy is pulling her hair out. He's a nice enough kid, but he's dead weight.
Forgot to add: his speech was very eloquent and inspiring, but I was bothered by the comment he made about security emanating from the rightness (justness? I'm paraphrasing) of our cause. If that were true--if all it took for security was for a cause to be noble and just--it would truly be a much better world. Security has to be worked for; it doesn't come from just being right and good.
First black president? WIN. Orderly and peaceful transfer of power with no bloody coups? WIN.
I didn't vote for him, but I truly hope that he fulfills all of the hopes and dreams and expectations. He is my President and I wish him well.
I listened to inauguration coverage on the radio (can't watch TV/streaming video at work),until I got oversaturated and had to retreat to my iPod for a while. Did not watch TV last night because I had homework (training to become a vet tech).
I am a stepmom to three boys. I met them when they were 12, 13, and 15. They are now 18, 19, and 21. An oft-repeated theme in my life has been that I never, EVER would have done/said/acted the way that these boys have been known to do. They were raised by a single dad who, to be fair, did the best he could, but let's just say that I have never appreciated my parents as much as I did once I became a stepmom, and I wish I could be half the parent that they were.
Like others have noted, I am really discouraged by the way teens and kids treat adults nowadays. If not respect, there at least used to be a healthy fear that seems totally absent now.
"Gladiator" was dedicated "to our friend, Oliver Reed." His death during filming was made even more poignant by the fact that his character, Proximo, dies during the course of the film. The CGI work is truly well-done; unless you know where to look, you wouldn't know it's CGI, and I'm not sure even then. Sad, because "Gladiator" might have launched a return to acting for him.
I thought it had been known and understood for some time now that there are two kinds of fat: subcutaneous and visceral. The visceral fat that accumulates around the internal organs is beneath the muscle and pushes out, that is why you will see guys with enormous guts that feel hard to the touch, not bowl-full-of-jelly jiggly. Visceral fat, along with a hereditary tendency to carry your weight in "apple" fashion around the waist, is linked with type 2 diabetes. Anecdotal though it may be, I'm only 20 lbs over what I should weigh for my height, but that and a family history of diabetes, plus the familial tendency to carry weight around the waist rather than below it (it's healthier to have a big butt than a big waist) resulted in getting diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 4 years ago.
It seems to me like all of the advice in the article was good, sound, healthy stuff for losing weight, period. But the two kinds of weight thing is a valid fact, sorry. Fat IS fat, but it affects your health in different ways according to where it accumulates. So guess who's been avoiding white sugar, white flour, and has exercised *nearly* every day of the new year?
I wish PETA was half as concerned with actually helping to improve the lives of animals as it is with getting attention. This is why I stopped sending them money years ago (I was a vegetarian for almost ten years and PETA was at one time a really useful vegetarian resource) and instead when I can afford to give to charity, I give to organizations like HSUS and ASPCA.
