Every Best Picture Nominee Starring… Puppies

Eight movies are up for Best Picture at the Oscars tonight. Even if you’ve seen them all, it’s worth another look when they feature cute little puppies in the starring roles!

You’ve never seen The Revenant like you’ll see it here. The puppies are all from NY Pet Rescue. Maybe this will give them their big break! -via the Presurfer

The 2015 Razzies Have a Tie for Worst Picture

The 36th annual Golden Raspberry Awards were bestowed last night, the night before the Oscars, as is the custom every year. The awards recognize the worst movies and actors of the previous year. This year’s Worst Picture trophy ended in a tie between Fifty Shades of Grey and Fantastic 4. Both pictures can claim the title of Worst Picture of 2015. Those two films beat out Jupiter Ascending, Paul Blart Mall Cop 2, and Pixels. The other awards went to:

Worst Actor: Jamie Dornan for Fifty Shades of Grey

Worst Actress: Dakota Johnson for Fifty Shades of Grey

Worst Supporting Actress: Kaley Cuoco for two movies, Alvin & The Chipmunks: Road Chip and The Wedding Ringer

Worst Supporting Actor: Eddie Redmayne for Jupiter Ascending

Worst Director: Josh Trank for Fantastic 4

Worst Screen Combo: Jamie Dornan & Dakota Johnson for Fifty Shades of Grey

Worst Screenplay: Fifty Shades of Grey

Worst Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel: Fantastic 4

In all, Fifty Shades of Grey won five Razzies while Fantastic 4 took home three awards.

Homemade Zamboni

When you’ve got enough energy and creativity to build a personal ice rink in your backyard, it only makes sense that you would figure out how to groom it with your own homemade Zamboni! All you need is a tricycle, a bucket, and a towel.

(YouTube link)

Jaxen explains how it works, and then polishes the entire rink himself. The only difficulty I see is driving a tricycle on ice (hence the helmet). But I don’t think they make snow tires for tricycles. Someone in the comments said,

Tried it with my bike.. How do I get blood off the ice?

Dinner for One

Norman may be eating alone, but he still keeps his manners. A napkin for any possible mess, a spoon for his soup, and glasses placed carefully to the side of the table.

Well, there is that “licking the table” thing, but at least he doesn’t leave a mess behind. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Child Doesn't Know How to Use Slip 'n' Slide

Jac Coleman’s son Henry got a Slip ’n’ Slide, but he’s not exactly got the instructions down yet. Doesn’t matter, he’s having a great time- as we are just watching him! -via Tastefully Offensive

Oscar Predictions 2016

The 88th Academy Awards will be presented Sunday night. Pop cultures websites all over have laid down their predictions, and we’ll find out soon who is right. The linked websites have predictions for all the major awards, and many also include their opinions of who should win if it’s different from their predictions. But I’ll just mention their prediction for Best Picture here.

The Atlantic predicts The Revenant.

The New Yorker calls it for The Revenant.

Uproxx predicts The Revenant.

The Week selects The Revenant.

The Daily Beast picks The Big Short.

Vulture goes with The Revenant.

Flavorwire predicts The Big Short.

The A.V. Club thinks it will be The Revenant.

CinemaBlend thinks it will be The Big Short.

Buzzed predicts The Revenant.

The Verge says it will be The Revenant.

Screen Rant predicts The Revenant.

FiveThirtyEight says it will be The Revenant.

Screen Junkies has a video, but it wouldn’t load for me.

In many of these articles, which movie the authors think will win is separated from which movie they want to win, and many of them are wistfully wishing for Mad Max: Fury Road to win Best Picture or Best Director.

The Teen Who Invented Bras

Young debutante Polly Phelps didn’t like what her corset did to the appearance of her dress in 1910 and put two handkerchiefs together to replace it. Her brassiere became popular, and she patented it in 1914. She then sold the patent for a pittance, but she didn’t need the money. That’s when Polly’s life got really interesting.

After her invention she met Harry Crosby, who confessed his adoration for her in a Tunnel of Love. She promptly divorced her first husband, married Harry in 1922, changed her name to Caresse and moved to France. Harry had also suggested the name Clytoris, but they decided to name their dog that instead. From Europe, Harry sent a telegram back to Boston to his family declaring: "PLEASE SELL 10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LEAD A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE."

And it was an amazing life. Caresse Crosby ended up with a list of accomplishments that ranged from substantial to silly, which you can read about at Racked.

Key Moments in History: The Domestication of Dogs

And that’s exactly what happened -and they all lived happily ever after. At least according to the latest comic from Alex Culang and Raynato Castro at Buttersafe.

What Color Is This Jacket?

It was exactly one year ago today that the internet was set afire by a simple picture of a dress that looks to be different colors to different people. And now it’s happened again.

The picture above was first posted by Pop Punk Blogger, who deleted it in regret at what she had started. If you aren’t still upset about that dress a year later, take a poll and tell us what color you see.

Runaway 'Unicorn' Leads Police On A 4-Hour Chase

On Wednesday, photographer Sandra Boos of Madera Ranchos, California, was taking pictures of a child with her white pony Juliette, who was dressed in a pink halter and a spiral unicorn horn. Juliet suddenly bolted and ran away. Concerned calls began to come in to the local police from drivers reporting a unicorn loose on different highways. A helicopter was dispatched. Juliette was spotted in an orchard, but police could not approach the skittish creature.

After four hours on the lam, Juliette was finally calmed by a friend of Boos on horseback, and she was led away to a paddock. There were some near-misses in traffic, but the unicorn was uninjured. -via HuffPo

The Reclaimed Wood Shop

Hampton Rutland used wood reclaimed from an old house to finish the inside of his workshop. He has to gather, haul, sort, plane, and install hundreds of wood slats. He’s good at it, too. But if you think this is a typical woodworking video, you’re in for a treat. It starts out like a typical DIY tutorial, but gradually gets more and more interesting.

As the action speeds up, we get POV shots. Then comes the stop-motion work. Then his tools join in and dance. Then he gets some help from Spider-Man and Darth Vader. It all goes so smoothly that the project seems to finish itself! -via Viral Viral Videos

The Consequences of Robot Abuse

The latest generation of the Atlas robot is so human-like that it’s scary. But if we could put ourselves in the poor robot’s place, we can see he’s just a product of his environment. When you spend your whole life suffering constant bullying and abuse from the geeks at Boston Dynamics, something’s gotta give. A remix of the original video spells it out for us.

(YouTube link)

Poor Atlas. He saw no alternative than to run away from home. The real problem comes when a critical number of robots that feel the same way manage to band together and exact revenge on humankind for the poor treatment they endured when they were young. May God help us when that happens.

Modern Solo Adventures

The weirdest family dynamics of all time cover the several generations of Skywalkers. After The Force Awakens, we were left to imagine the interactions we missed between episodes VI and VII. Filling them in can be hilarious.

A Tumblr blogger named mamalaz has been publishing a series of photo-illustrated conversations between members of the Solo family, mainly Han and Ben, called Modern Solo Adventures. We see the fate of the galaxy interfering with quality time between parent and child, and vice-versa. The images are animated .gifs at the site. There are occasional guest appearances by Leia, Luke, Lando, and even Darth Vader if the joke calls for it.  -via Buzzfeed

Papa

It’s a classic conundrum. He’s really into tech; she’s more socially-oriented. How can a father and daughter relate to each other? To him, the solution must be more and better technology. If he can't be a perfect father, he’ll build one!

(vimeo link)

But in the end, they both learn that being alike is less important than being there for each other. This award-winning short film is from Natalie Labarre. -via the Presurfer
