Meet the muon, who lives fast and dies young, the up quark and the down quark, who are best friends, and Higgs boson, who everyone wants to meet. Pictured is the strange quark and the gluon. Sitcom Settings

Today's Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss will find out how well you know the places where televisions sitcoms took place. I scored 67%, which surprised me because there were a lot of shows in this quiz I have never seen. http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/16124

A Bra's Tale

Betty Jenkins was once an adventurous young woman with a flat chest. Her mother gave her an inflatable bra to attract men. But what happens when you wear a partially-inflated bra in a plane flying over the Andes Mountains?
It turned out the cabin was not pressurized, and the bra was expanding.

"As the thing got bigger, I tried to stand up," Jenkins said, "and I couldn't see my feet."

The instructions said that the bra's pads could be inflated up to a size 48.

"I thought, 'What would happen if it goes beyond 48?'" Jenkins recalled.

Big trouble in South America, that's what. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91943477 -via YesButNoButYes

The Price of Food: 2007 vs. 2008

This is from the Cattle Network, so the prices are wholesale for farmers. But the real story is the change from a year ago. The post also has prices for livestock, fruits, and vegetables. Lemons are up 155%! Looks like we will be eating fewer lentils and lemons and more tangerines and bacon. Bacon? Yes, bacon is the only meat that has decreased in price! Mmm... bacon. http://www.cattlenetwork.com/Content.asp?ContentID=230814 -via reddit

Explosive Art

Matthew Stromberg is a professor at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He also creates "explosive art".
Matthew Stromberg uses a wide variety of powerful and volatile substances, including rocket fuel, explosives, gunpowder, propellants and bullets, aka energetic materials, in order to create art rather than destroy. The Savannah College of Art and Design professor utilizes these forceful methods to apply his mark to wood, metal and paper. The results are quite visceral and evocative of the violent patterns of nature-- images seared and impressed in high-energy events. They kick ass, too.

Uncertain Times has videos of Stromberg at work with rocket fuel, homemade explosive, and a submachine gun. Link -Thanks, John!

The Coney Island Quiz

The world famous Cyclone roller coaster opened 81 years ago today at Coney Island in New York. Today's Lunchtime Quiz at mental_floss will find out how much you know about Coney Island and its history.
