I would almost be curious if it would be easier to assemble a more efficient one yourself from wire, scraps of metal and permanent magnets for the same amount of effort used here.

I think several thousand dollars is quite the normal range for a wedding cake. I think weddings are so expensive to discourage people from having multiple marriages ;)
Could you imagine the captain barking to his underlings "raise the radiation shield" and having them all run to the bathroom to, uh, gather up raw materials?
