12 Weirdest Retro Recipes

The above photo is of a seafood mousse, shaped to look like an actual, smiling fish. The only way I could describe it would be to say if you approached a table where that exact dish was being served, you would walk into the room, look into its empty, smiling face, and if you had any sense of self-respect and self-preservation, would turn around and walk out immediately. But in the seventies, weird food creations like this were actually pretty common. It was a very strange time, people.

Take a gander at this list of the 12 weirdest retro recipes from Oddee. Honestly, they start off slow with the above mentioned abomination, but it only gets weirder and more gross and the list goes on. At one point, there is a recipe for a jello ring that is filled with prunes and covered in ice-cream. That sounds like something you would feed a terrorist to extract vital information.

The funny part is, people were actually making this stuff back then. Wait until you see the "meat-za". You can't unsee things like that. Hate to think how many lives were lost to these gastronomic nightmares.

The Story of One Incredibly Scary Hiking Trip

There are some details that go along with hiking that people seem to forget. Namely, do not do it alone. As much as it can be zen, depending on where you go, bad things can happen. Also, take into consideration all the things that can naturally happen when one is exposed to those elements and you realize, hiking it a tad more dangerous than most people make it out to be. But outside of a few mountain lion stories here and there, it is all usually pretty mild. Well, this story goes a little Blair Witch, so be prepared.

The Unresolved Mysteries page on Reddit has a hiking story right now that is something right out of a horror movie. For me to tell you too much will ruin the fright factor of the story, but I will tell you this straight away: It is super creepy and sounds like the makings of a perfect horror movie. Don't worry. It is nothing so upsetting that you will read it and need to bleach your mind (this is Neatorama, folks), but it is a creepy little unsolved mystery that is well worth taking a few minutes to read about.

I was going to go for a hike today, but a bike ride in the city seems like a much better idea now.

How To Make Ferrofluids

Ferrofluid, by definition, is a fluid that contains a magnetic suspension. We have posted them sculptures and videos with them before, but to most people, the idea of ever being able to play with the stuff seemed unlikely. Well, guess what? You can make your own ferrofluid, and do all the playing and experimenting with it that you want.

Heck, maybe you will even end up making a scultpture with the stuff that we will feature one day on this site. Life is insane like that. You never know.

This clip is taken from the Household Hacker YouTube page, and if you have a second today, go check it out. They even teach how you to make a keg out of a watermelon. Yes, you read that correctly. Life hacks are a beautiful thing.

Can You Imagine Getting A Massive Hug From A Lioness?

I am not quite sure who this Jay Hawk Daily guy is, but he posts some amazing videos to his YouTube on the regular of him doing stuff that most of us would either love to do, or die in fear and refuse to do. Take, for example, this video of him showing up and hanging out with a lioness who just cannot seem to stop giving him love and hugs. 99% of us will live our entire lives never knowing what a lioness hug feels like (and being somewhat grateful for that), but to see the bond these two obviously have is amazing. She just acts like a giant kitten around him.

(YouTube Link)

My rational sense of self-preservation knows better than to be jealous or envy him, but it is still wonderful to see just how gentle and loving wild animals can be towards certain humans. I have said it before and will say it again. I often think humans could take a lesson in humanity away from some animals.

But keep in mind, were this anyone but him, they probably would have been mauled. Never let these vids lull you into a false sense about what these animals can do. Just saying.

Top Ten Saddest Robot Deaths

Robots in cinema are awesome. Since most of us were children, we always wanted a cool, nice, tough robot to be our friend, and it never seems to happen. But that is the beauty of the magic of film. In film, robots can be awesome and friendly and cute. The other problem with cinema is that they love to kill things off in the end. It is like a painful lesson of life, squeezed into 90 minutes. Everything you ever love will die. Yet I digress, lest I depress myself and you even more than this list might.

I figure now would be the best time to embrace the idea of "good robots", as it seems that our takeover at the hands of evil ones will be happening at some point in near the future, and when that happens, lists like this will be more positive to us than sad. But for now, while we still love them and they have yet to kill any of our families, this list is awesome (in a sad kind of way).

Pardon me for a moment while I sob for the Iron Giant. If you dig this vid, WatchMojo has more like it over at their YouTube page. Go show them some love.

The Wonders of The Blue Ball Machine

Do you ever find yourself looking at something, and somehow just losing yourself in its intricacies? It can be artwork, or a moment glimpsing at the sky, but it just grabs you, and in that moment, nothing else exists? That is how I feel about the Blue Ball Machine. I think that title sounds a little off-color, so we I will avoid using that expression again.

Just trust me. Click the above link, and be prepared to be sucked in. A couple of pieces of advice before you do go there. It may seem old-school and overwhelming at first, but the way to find a flow to it all is watch just one ball is it runs its journey through the machine. Before you know it, you are sitting there, glued to your screen at this mesmerizing display.

It may look old-school, and may seem archaic, but who cares? Once you get enraptured by the machine, little else will matter. At least for a minute or two, anyway.

Sully the Dog Pins Her Owner For Some Epic "I Missed You" Hugs

One of the funniest things about big dogs is that they don't seem to understand that they are big dogs. Take Sully the Saint Bernard for example. A massive dog by any means, but it seems everytime "daddy" gets home, Sully tackles him and forces some quality hug time on him to let him know how much he was missed.

I will be honest with you. I would be delighted if something ever missed me that much.

(YouTube Link)

While the thought of a massive Saint Bernard tackling you and pinning you might inspire images of Cujo in your head, it is quite clear to see Sully is just a big teddy bear. And really, what is better than a big teddy bear that loves to give hugs?

The 26 Feels Every Guy Goes Through When Shopping With His Girlfriend

I will admit to you all that most men do not like going shopping with their lady. It is not an act of disrespect or disregard, but we just do not have the patience to sit there while our girlfriends and wives try on a multitude of outfits for hours at a time, while we sit on a bench at a store, looking dead inside. This is not to say all women shop like that, and all men don't like it. That would be an unfair generalization. That being said, there is an element of truth to what I just said. Heck, half the guys I know don't even try on clothes when they shop. They just buy the right size and hope it works out. But women can be a different story.

So maybe some people wonder what it is like for a man when he goes shopping with his girlfriend. The strange range of emotions he must go through. Well, Bored.com put together a list of the 26 feels that all men go through when shopping with their lady, and if nothing else, it is really good for a laugh.

It is mostly told in gifs and single sentences like a story. But I would be lying if I were to say, as a man who sat on many a stool for many an hour waiting for the ladies in my life to pick clothes, a few of these had me laughing out loud at how true-to-life they are.

Also, no disrespect meant to any females. We love you, that is why we suffer for you. Selflessness, after all, is a big part of love.

The 23 Weirdest Movies and What They Really Mean

The normal can be boring sometimes. We have all done normal. We have all seen and heard and lived normal. What is great about movies is that sometimes they can transport us to the unexpected and nonsensical in ways our normal lives would not allow. Film is a vehicle, and in some great cases, you get in and have no idea where you are going. That can be the fun of surreal, strange, and dark movies. They are that ride to the bad part of town that you know better than to take in real life.

Yet sometimes, you can walk away from a twisted and surreal film quite unsure of what they were trying to tell or show you with their story. Thankfully, Total Film put together a stellar list of the 23 Weirdest Movies and What They Mean. Take, for example, Eraserhead (pictured above):

"Eraserhead is a murky excursion into fatherhood anxiety, post-nuclear nightmare and folksy Americana.

It’s also a self-referential wink at the idea of audience befuddlement: Henry’s final dissolution into the light is like losing one’s self in the film.

As Lynch claims, “I felt Eraserhead. I didn’t think it.”

With a piece like this, you get much deeper insight into some amazing films that may have left you a bit perplexed. Keep in mind, there is often no right or wrong in art. So if a theory on here counter-acts a theory you had about the same film, that doesn't mean your theory is wrong. This is art. There is no right or wrong. Only interpretation.

Epic Meal Time: All Bacon Burger

As I am sure many of you know already, the guys over at Epic Meal Time are beasts. They put together meals that would cause most of us to go to the E.R. within an hour, and they do it time and time again. Heck, they even have an episode where they go to the doctor to show the effects these meals are (or oddly enough, aren't) having on their bodies.

Although we have posted a couple of Epic Meal Time bits here, I felt today was the perfect day for the All Bacon Burger, a meat monstrosity that will have you equal parts drooling and gagging. That is the beauty of Epic Meal Time: You run the full range that they do when you watch an episode. First, you get hungry. Then, you get kind of repulsed. Finally, you just feel tired. No, seriously, watch this and tell me I am wrong.

(YouTube Link)

While I can confidently say I do not have the intestinal fortitude to actually eat anything these guys make, it's still a riot to watch them do it. The real, underlying question now is, who is the first one of these guys to have a stroke? Seems inevitable when they make meat creations like this one.

Summer Movies 2014: Hits and Misses

Believe it or not, despite how many massive movies came and went this summer, movies in general did not do as well this summer as projected. That means, a lot of big movies did not make the money they needed to make, while a couple other movies no one expected came in and kicked butt.

To put the summer movies of 2014 in perspective, Screen Junkies hosted a panel of some of the finest in internet movie writing (though I was woefully neglected) to talk about some of the best and some of the worst movies that came out this past summer. You really can't argue with their logic (though you don't have to agree with the one person who liked the TMNT reboot. Best we will just leave that alone).

(YouTube Link)

Much like the panel, I was shocked at how good Edge of Tomorrow was, but feel the need to expand on something they say. They all agree that Edge of Tomorrow was a surprisingly engaging and fun film, but that it had a super generic name. But someone should point out that the movie Edge of Tomorrow is based on a Manga book called All You Need Is Kill.

Now that, my friends, is a name that would have brought the movie the crowd it deserved. Okay, that is all. Just proving my worth for the next time they have one of these panels.

South African Street Performers Put on Remarkable Show

Street performers are a dime-a-dozen in any city or country you go to now. Anywhere you walk, you are bound to see someone dancing or doing extreme acts of yoga or maybe even some cool (but cheesy) street magic. But how often do you encounter a crew who seemingly can keep you enthralled by doing all three at once? Seems pretty rare. In the case of the following video from Viral Hog, seems they found some incredibly talented street performers from South Africa and they turned the camera on them so the rest of the world could be as impressed as they are.

The thing to pay attention to is the floating hat trick. Not so much an actual trick as just a cool use of physics, it is still a really interesting and original move, and one I have never seen done so expertly anywhere else.

(YouTube Link)

So the next time you pass a street performer, toss them a buck or two. Just because they don't make a living doing what we do, doesn't mean they any less of a right to make a living. These guys prove that by putting on an awesome show.

Why You Need To Go To The "Staggering Beauty" Website

First, I want to tell you Staggering Beauty is a game. No, no, maybe it is a website. Perhaps, it is just an interactive art project that you can play with and manipulate to your own whims. Then it dawns on me. It doesn't matter what it is. Stuff like this does not need to be put in a box and labeled, when what works so well about it is the very fact that you cannot do that with it.

Maybe instead of me deeply philosophizing about this, you should just hop over to Staggering Beauty and check it out for yourself. Put together by Google Creative Labs designer, George Michael Brower, and though it is simple and design and execution, there is something that just sucks you in and keeps you there.

Once you pop over there and mess with it a little bit, you will see just what I am talking about. Simple? Yes. But there is something staggeringly beautiful about that.

Pixar and Their Awesome Blooper Reels: A Bug's Life

Pixar seem to go above and beyond when it comes to producing family entertainment. The quality of their work, when paired with the art and writing, pretty much ensures everyone walks away a fan of everything they do.

A great example of going above and beyond is going so far as to animate blooper reels to put at the end of some of their films. It is those little examples of going further than necessary that puts Pixar above most film companies. Also, how can you possibly be in a bad mood when animated bugs are messing up their lines to a cartoon? It just elevates the soul.

(YouTube Link)

I may not be a doctor, or anything close to a doctor. Heck, I would go so far as to say you should never take medical advice from me. That being said, pretty sure a Pixar blooper reel a day would keep the doctor away.

The Scariest Music Video You Have Never Seen

Music videos often come across like they want to be bubble gum. They want to be easily accessed and enjoyed by all. They want to be safe and tasty, but nothing too out of the ordinary. But there are exceptions to every rule. In this case, the exception are the music videos of electronic artist Aphex Twin (who is actually known as Richard David James). He blends the scary with the insane, and it all acts as a soundtrack to his frantic, break-beat music that makes you feel like you are going to jump out of your skin.

Though I will tell you this video is intense, scary, and at times, overwhelming, I can also tell you it is SFW. Just keep the volume fairly low, and expect anyone who walks by your cubicle to look at you really strange and maybe not want to sit with you at lunch after.

(YouTube Link)

If you find the anarchaic and dystopian future in this video cool, you should check out some of his other work. Pretty much all his music videos will scar you for life in one way or another.
