It's also funny how somehow, the life of a deer is more valuable than that of a human, one's own species.
But yeah, I'm with Patrick and mu here. I think that people would have a deeper appreciation for life in general if they acknowledged that the meat on their plate once had a face and deserves to be well prepared and never wasted given how it is feeding us and keeping us healthy and well... alive.
I am not a hunter myself, though I fish and have raised hogs for slaughter. Those experiences have taught me more about the value of life than any tree hugging PETArd type could ever hope to understand.
In Texas, where my dad lives, deer are considered vermin, and with good reason. darlzwik already went into that, so I will not expand on it.
Venison is probably one of the tastiest meats outside of alligator as far as I am concerned, and I am glad I live in the UK, where it is readily available in the store most of the year. I wish it were more like that in the States because it is also very healthy.
I have all the respect in the world for the responsible hunter, and though this story is kind of funny, it drives home the point... if you hit a deer, shoot it, or otherwise stun it, never approach it until you are sure it's dead. Deer may be skittish and people may want to associate them with a Disney cartoon, but they can also be very dangerous.
As I said, she might be the nicest person on earth. I don't know that, and quite frankly, that isn't the issue.
Your post tells me that you understand where I am coming from with my opinion on the matter. But seriously, what thought process leads a presumably intelligent adult with children to do something like this? It's not just the vandalism, which is stupid enough. Few people want to see their towns vandalized, no matter how pretty, especially when cleaning it up is costly. Even pretty artwork sprayed on a public space makes that place look trashy and even dirty most of the time. Never mind that it isn't her property to decorate.
It's the fact that she put her name to it all knowing that it would eventually lead police to her. She wasn't thinking of her kids when she was being vain and cocky about actually directing the authorities to her web site, and eventually, her doorstep. If she was thinking at all, she was thinking only of herself, and even that thinking was seriously, laughably flawed.
That's like robbing a bank and taking off the mask to blow a kiss at the CCTV camera. Who does that?
You can't defend that. And you know what? It's pretty darned hilarious that anyone could be that clueless. Cruel as it may seem that the internet is laughing at your friend, c'mon, this kind of thing usually only happens on bad sit coms.
That said, I do feel sorry for the kids involved because they don't deserve to be victims of their mother's complete lack of sensible judgement.
She may be the nicest person in the world, but she is still a vandal. No one is perfect, true, but not everyone is putting their "art" where it is not allowed or necessarily wanted. She did not bring drugs or violence into your town, but she did bring vandalism, no matter how pretty. Furthermore, she busted herself, which is not at all responsible or intelligent when one has children they supposedly care about.
Just because a person isn't a drug dealer doesn't make it okay to commit a lesser crime. That's like saying, "Hey, I'm abusing alcohol. At least it's not crack."
This isn't an area where I even try to make a stand. When I still lived in America, I tried not to buy anything made in China, or any Communist country (not a debate I am willing to get into so I will just say that my parents are Cuban exiles and we have reason to hate Communism and their beloved firing squads), making an effort to buy American. It doesn't work. I just don't even try to win that battle.
Who really knows what's true? A lot of people here have stated that when they were younger, they would have lied to look like they were "cooler and badder" than what they actually were. I probably would have lied the other way because I never trusted adults enough to admit to anything I might have done wrong. I had enough fear and respect for my parents to always cover my tracks and deny all wrong doing. I wasn't even a bad kid, though I sure did get away with a lot more than I should have. So, there is no way to get an accurate result with this sort of survey.
Just from personal observation, I don't believe that kids are all that bad, or necessarily worse than previous generations. I'm pretty sure that my parents were no angels. It's what you learn from those not so angelic experiences that end up counting in the end anyway. Those that don't learn end up living lives that reflect that as adults.
