Dave 20's Comments

Who says that all we know is not part of a computer simulation? Or part of somebody's dream?

What happens when the dreamer wakes, or the computer gets rebooted?

In the US, we carry our chickens in red and white paper buckets.

You beat me to the punch line; in a red & white bucket, on the passenger seat. But we don't carry them around the world; just from the drive-up to home.

Stapp’s body is believed to have endured forces equivalent to 40G, or 40 times the force of gravity. But no one will ever know for sure, because all 16 of the sensors failed, each one giving a zero reading for the test... Because of a simple human error, Stapp’s life had been put at risk in vain.

Seems silly that the first run of the test would run at forces that high. Seems that a more logical approach would be to run the sled up to a lower speed & hit the brakes to ensure that all was working as it should. With a newly designed & previously untested set of sensors in place, that's how I would've done it anyway.

Then again, as they say, "hindsight is 20/20".

Murphy’s Law is why two-pronged electrical plugs are now designed with one prong slightly larger than the other - so they can be plugged in the proper way.

Not so. Electrical plugs are designed that way now to avoid the possibility of electrical shock from ungrounded appliances. On any appliance that operates on AC and has a two-pronged plug, one of the conductors attached to the plug is also attached to the frame of the appliance. Likewise, in the house wiring and the receptacle, one of the conductors is tied to ground (the wider of the two slots in a 110VAC receptacle in the US) and the other is tied to one of the 110VAC busses in the breaker box. If not for the difference in size of the prongs, the frame of the appliance could have 110VAC applied to it. The appliance would still work, but it could pose a danger to whomever is using it.

The danger is most notable in lamps and devices with standard light sockets on them; if the plug were inserted backwards, the 110VAC would be applied to the metal socket on the outside of the lamp that you'd touch to turn the thing on & off. When properly connected, the 110VAC is only applied to the center contact at the bottom of the socket.

Without the different sized prongs in the plug, the user would have no way of knowing which way to plug it in. That was the case in years past, but we've learned from our mistakes. I guess you could argue that Murphy's Law prompted the change, but it'd be a stretch.

Stink. Got my invite, downloaded the OS X software, then find out it's only for Intel Macs.

Guess I gotta clear the dustbunnies & mothballs out of the crappy old PC & crank that up to give it a try.

Ah, Art Bell & the tin foil hat crowd at Coast to Coast AM. Used to listen often years back when I worked the night shift; very entertaining, but scary to see how gullible people are.

Check this page; at least there are some thinking individuals in Art's listener ranks.

I remember seeing a documentary about this language in college years ago. Very interesting.

Funny thing... Our pet canary is usually pretty active this time of day, singing & flying around his cage, but while that video was playing, he sat on his perch listening intently. Now that it's done he's singing up a storm & flying back & forth like mad! He's got to be several generations removed from the islands, but the sound must mean something to him. When we whistle to him, he just ignores us.

Cool! Stick one in an envelope and send it to your favorite politician, then sit back and watch the fun!

On second thought, don't. Or at least don't tell anybody where you got the idea.

Lincoln and Byron's condition - the twin-to-twin transfusion - is actually not terribly rare; it's caused by a malformation of the placenta that results in one of the twins getting far greater blood flow than the other. A couple I know has a set of twins that had the same thing going on, but the OB/GYN caught it early and an in-utero surgical procedure corrected it.

It's hard to tell them apart now, 18 months later, as they tear around like mad-toddlers!

Somebody tell Rosie O'Donnell about this quick! Gotta be another Presidential conspiracy, cuz everybody knows that fire can't melt steel or concrete!

What about the Moeller AirCar? That ought to fit in pretty well under the Fake Product category I'd think, as he's been taking investors' money for decades and has yet to build a working prototype. True, he's got a couple of machines off the ground, but nothing living up to his hype.

"stingy ‘Scotch’ bosses"? Never heard that connection before. But I suppose slurs like that would have regional variations. If the complainers had been from around here, we would've ended up with Dutch tape! Then what would 3M use for a logo?

Although wristwatches are still widely used, some say that cell phones, with their built-in clocks, will eventually overtake them.

I remember going to a bar in Wichita Falls, TX, years ago where the bathrooms were similarly marked; men's room on the left and ladies on the right, but the men's sign was on the right with a tiny arrow pointing left, vice versa for the ladies room. I turned away from the urinal to see a woman walk in, turn red, and walk out.
