From the article:

"Besides providing musicians with enhanced tone and sturdier instruments, the lightweight material [for guitars] emits sound 11 times faster than wood."

What on earth does that mean?

Am I the only person who found this incredibly creepy? That high, five-year-old voice singing about shooting a man in Reno just to watch him die? Reminds me of Chucky.

This "poll" is totally worthless. Time even says so right there on the page (in very faint type): "Note: Poll results are not scientific and reflect the opinions of only those users who chose to participate."

For one thing, for a survey to be valid, you've got to have a random sampling of the population whose opinions you're trying to gauge. For another, the story doesn't even tell you how the question was worded, which is critically important: Were they asked to pick their favorite of the four? Were they asked four individual yes-no questions, i.e., "Do you trust Katie Couric? Do you trust Charlie Gibson?" etc.? Were they only given these four choices, or were these the top vote-getters? This is about as scientific as a tarot reading.

The headline should read something like, "People who read Time Magazine on-line and are willing to spend their time filling out an on-line poll are more likely to say they trust Jon Stewart than to say they trust Brian Williams, Katie Couric, or Charlie Gibson." I guess that's a bit unwieldy for a headline, though.

48-year old Viorel Firoiu of Orlea, Romania, admits he was drunk when he tried to cure his constipation by sticking a hammer in his rectum.

Best opening sentence ever.

I'm amazed at the negative comments here. Sure, these people aren't the greatest dancers. And maybe they're "uncool," whatever that means.

But I guarantee you that they all knew that beforehand. They knew they weren't great dancers, and they got out there and shook their butts to celebrate their friends' wedding anyway. And that makes them ten times cooler than most of us, myself included, will ever be.

edvim:

First, you're not going to persuade anyone of anything if you start off telling your readers they "can't understand" something, calling them callous, and assuming their posts come from "frustrated anger."

Second, I don't think anyone's begrudging this guy the right to live how he wants; what's bothersome is the smugness that radiates through everything he says. He talks as though he has seceded from society and is superior to all of us grunts who actually interface with civilization. But even as he disdains civilization and all that it entails, he's benefiting from, and even leeching off of, its existence.

If he wants to live off of the discards from society, great; that's no trouble to anyone. But to do so while condemning society seems morally untenable to me. It's like a roommate who trashes the apartment, never contributes to running the house, and yet still acts as though he's doing you a favor by letting you live with him.
