"So growing these bacterium in large numbers doesn’t seem like a good idea on the surface."

And continuing to choke the oceans with plastic does?

I'm impressed with the project. Science classes must've changed quite a bit since I was in high school.

I don't think it's really synesthesia-based, nach. The symbols only really represent things like the pitch of the phrase (an upward arrow as the pitch rises) or two sounds played together (two symbols overlapping). To base such a test on synesthesia would be next to impossible, as it would be different for everyone.

It's like Hooters, I guess. If you don't like it, you don't have to go there! It's not like there's a shortage of other coffee places...

Some of these overly vocal opponents maybe need to switch to decaf.

Well, if they want more people to pursue advanced mathematics, they need to make it more attractive. Literally. If I saw a hot mathematician calendar, I'd be more likely to be interested. I probably still couldn't do the math, but I'd at least be more intrigued.

Even if he's not interested in material things, he's still interested in comfort and safety. Otherwise, he'd be living on the street.

If he really wanted to practice what he preached, he'd give away all his money to charity right now, get himself a shopping cart, and find a street corner to sit on. It's easy to say material things mean nothing when you don't have to worry about where your next meal is coming from or whether you're going to freeze to death if the temperature drops.

I don't know. When it's really humid, I prefer to wear smaller clothes (shorts, tank tops) and not cover up my body with full-length pajamas!

I'm still trying to get over the communal bathroom thing. I don't think I could live in Shanghai.

This has been all over the local news. It's bizarre, to say the least.

I find it a little hard to believe, though, that these feet just came off the bodies through decomposition, as the authorities say. If that's the case, why is it four right feet? Why no left feet? Why no other body parts?

Interesting test. I scored 75% overall. If we weren't allowed to replay the sounds, I probably would've scored much lower. It took a few listens for some of them before I figured out the pattern.

I don't know much about SSNs, but why aren't they like credit card numbers? Why can't a new one be issued if the old one is compromised? If the government issues a new number and cancels the old one, it seems to me that the problem of identity theft would become a little less of a problem.

Or is that too simple a solution?

Sure, it looks like the same dog. But even if you could raise it exactly the same way as the first one, it's not going to be the same dog. The personality could be vastly different. And that's probably the part of the dog that most people fall in love with!

You find some gems if you're into genealogy. One of my favourites was probably unintentional. Still, I wonder if, in the 1800s, poor little Harry Langstaff got teased a lot. He'd get teased today for sure!

I don't necessarily have a problem with him running against able-bodied athletes (he appears to do a lot of distance running, which has a lot to do with lungs and overall endurance... not leg strength). I think it's great he's going to be given a chance. Keep in mind that he hasn't even achieved the Olympic qualifying time yet.

The issue I have is that he's going to continue to compete in the Paralympic games as well. That doesn't seem fair to me. Pick one or the other. How is it any different than an able-bodied athlete petitioning to take up Olympic-level wheelchair racing while also competing in a running race?
