The cactus threw me for a moment. I was thinking rainy Pacific Northwest. It's been a while since I read the book!

A couple years ago, the film "Deck the Halls" (with Danny DeVito and Matthew Broderick) was filmed nearby. They actually built the facades of the houses in a vacant lot! It was pretty amazing. They turned a grassy lot into an upscale cul-de-sac, complete with a paved street. It was during a heatwave, but they managed to make it look like the middle of winter. There was fake snow everywhere. What was even more amazing is that they removed everything when they were done, and the grassy lot is again a grassy lot. Movie magic...

It may be a public-health triumph, but it doesn't reflect very well on drivers. You only start to slow down and consider other people's lives when it hit you in the pocketbook? Nice.

But then, should we really expect more from human beings?

I would be afraid that some person with a "let's get rid of the homeless" attitude might leave something spoiled... or worse. The intentions behind this idea are good; unfortunately, the intentions of some of the people who latch onto the idea might not be as admirable.

Well, I certainly won't be making yesterday's activities a tradition. Getting stuck in traffic in the summer heat in an un-airconditioned car because a bridge was closed by a "police incident" (jumper) wasn't much fun.

I don't think you could ever toast fuzzy blue bread enough for it to be edible.

It's not really an issue for me. I don't eat meat, so that's one big spoilage problem out the window. As for everything else, I usually eat it way before the due date. Anything that's past the due date is usually WAY PAST the due date, and often visibly furry.

I avoid soy yogurt at all costs, however. That stuff seems to get moldy whether it's past the due date or not!

So, according to some, childless people live meaningless lives.

I guess it might look like that if your biggest ambition in life is to pop out a few kids.

But look at some of the greatest minds in history. Do we remember people like Leonardo da Vinci and Albert Einstein for their kids (or lack of them)? Of course not.

Remember... to each his/her own. Maybe a life without kids would be meaningless to you. But that is not the case for others. There are plenty of ways for us to create meaning in our lives; having kids is just one of them.

@Christophe:

"yes, there is plenty of opportunities to cross the Canadian border nearly hassle free : the border is very long and there no wall, yet.

I wonder if cars with US plates entering from canada still escape most border controls…"

There are no walls, but there are cameras on poles. You can drive along the border in some areas and see them. Drug runners try to jump the border all the time. A lot of them get caught... 'cause they were being watched.

And as far as I know, if you're driving, you have to go through the border crossings. Unless you want to drive across someone's yard (which would probably arouse suspicion).
