True! Reminds me of the story about a Myth Busters cannon test where the ball was shot way out of their control area and bounced into a residential neighborhood. Missed a house or two and landed in a car that the driver just got out of. Nobody hurt! (or something like that)
That's pretty crazy. Being a geologist, I'd look at the older boulder in the first photo and say, "yeah... that's NOT a good place to put my house"! When I see some of the places people build homes, it makes me real nervous. I always say "just remember that ultimately, the earth wants to be flat. don't get in it's way!"
I think the description might be backwards - should it say: "that has its razor sharp edge on BOTTOM of the curve instead of the TOP".
Also, at only around 20 cm length it would be more appropriately called a Tanto (15-30 cm), or short-blade/dagger/knife. The two typical sword lengths being around 60-73 cm (katana) or 30-60 cm (wakizashi).
Well, as the mom so tactfully replied, "you obviously don't know anything about kids!" (ha ha!)
As a father of 2, uh, 'adventurous' youngsters, I do fully agree with what you're saying. However, we have to also appreciate the motivation (and need when appropriate) for kids to play and explore, and that some kids are more easily influenced / controlled than others. Ultimately, the parents have to know their own kids and use good judgement whether they should be there in the first place. And if things get out of hand you have to clamp down on the kiddies or vacate the premises asap. And if the risk of damage is higher (museum vs grocery store), then they must be more cautious and attentive.
From a purely scientific debate point of view, I wonder how much the act of removing, weighing, and putting back on the ring contributed to the wear? I'd suggest repeating the study on yearly intervals. Or not.
Just figured out the easter eggs theme - 'hidden in plain view' in the image are little scenes / public / performance art displays put on by various artists. You can explore around and when you are close to one, a pop-up will appear on the bottom right of the screen. If you want to cheat, you can just go to the 'artists' tab. I thought the Surveillance Protest was cool, especially considering how invisible it is without zooming in a long way. What I find really cool are the amazing 'action shots' captured in still - skateboarder in mid air, acrobats, the landing (or lifting?) helicopter.
One of the easter eggs is so smart it managed to trick Zeon Santos ( the author of this post) to write "20 MEGApixel" in the headline rather than "20 GIGApixel". Do I win?!?
They are creative and quite pretty looking, but there is a perverse irony in all of it. Like maybe, just maybe, the best way to connect with nature is to just get outside.
I see this in my nightmares all the time.
