I guess I have to agree with folks above. I used to visit Neatorama several times a day and I read the majority of the posts and followed most links. Now I find myself bored and uninterested. Like Haptic said, there are a few gems in there but you gotta dig.

It's certainly the type of people to drive the car. In Canada I find Mustang owners to consistently be jerks. Hummer drivers are right up there, but you don't see those too often.

Ted, are you serious?! If Alex and the gang didn't post things because *someone* might find it offensive there would be no Neatorama! (No internet, movies, music, books....)

And you're comparing racism to political preference? Come on, you're getting a little carried aren't you?

I don't understand what the big deal is about the occasional political post. (Although I think it's a stretch to call the past couple of posts political. You guys should feel blessed that your politics are so interesting! In Canada, there is not much excitement on the political scene.)
If you don't like a particular post, scroll on by. I find the sports related stuff boring but I don't criticize Alex for being a sports blog.

I think those toys are awesome! Why not like death? Why not laugh at it or about it? Death isn't bad or something to fear as most people seem to think. It's a part of life! No one gets out of here alive after all!

Couldn't agree with you more HollywoodBob. I think there is a big education gap needing to be filled in regards to uses for hemp. I almost fell off my chair the other day when I heard a very intelligent friend say that hemp and pot were the same thing!! Akk!!

It is and isn't better for the environment. For now just a few people run their cars on used vegetable oil from restaurants. They have no emissions from their car at all. The problem is if it were to catch on (which I don't think it will) there is not enough used veggie oil for everyone so corn crops would be used for car fuel instead of food and the prices of food would be driven up. That is a very bad thing.

There was a show of his here in Vancouver in a small local gallery not too long ago. The paintings really do need to be seen in person. The web photos do not do the works justice.

Many artists (modern and classic) don't make their own work. They come up with the ideas and have others make the art for them. So Betts is not unusual in having this machine do the paintings. Just because he is working this way does not mean he is any less trained than any other artist. And as I said, in person the paintings are quite striking.

TwoDragons, I am assuming you are in US, not sure if this is correct. I am in Canada and what you describe is not at all the situation here, at least not in BC. I have found that our kids are also lacking some basic skills but these kids are not the ones taking things like Social Justice. The kids who lack basic reading, writing and math skills take things like 'cafeteria' and weight training' which have devolved into fluff courses at my school and many around the province. Social Justice is not a 'fluff' course. It's actually pretty hard and requires students to be highly motivated and hard working.

Most of the unusual courses offered in our province are not fluff courses because it takes a lot of work to get them off the ground and running.

It's unfortunate that you see teachers using courses like this to push their own agendas. I see it too sometimes but for the most part teachers are really teaching kids in a fair and balanced way. Most of my colleagues encourage the students to ask questions and disagree. We spend a lot of our professional development time working on how to deliver a curriculum in the best way, reaching all learning styles.

Of course having said all that, I am lucky enough to be at a school with a fairly young and progressive staff. So even though my school is designated "inner city" (low socio-economic area) I don't always see the same problems as the other local schools.

Two Dragons, This is the whole reason to have a Social Justice class! Right now the kids that we are turning out into the world have exactly what you say: a "complete lack of capacity to reason on your own"
I'm not saying there is no need for the reading, writing and 'rithmatic, but why should students be limited to that? Why not have the basic tools and the skills to make change? Why is this bad?

Woogie says it well. This story reminds me of the guy who decided to not spend any money for a week.

He just had all his friends and family pay for his stuff.
