It was the antenna movements that got me. "You are getting sleepy... despite all the noise I'm making...and you think I'm hot and want to be the mother of my 200 children..."

When I lived in San Antonio, TX (85% Hispanic/Mexican population), the emphasis was on work (earning money now) over education (earning more money later). The son who drops out at 15 to work at a gas station is revered more than the son who stays in school for several more years to become a doctor.

Also, I covered Low Rider shows and met a really nice family of rather meager means. They were proud that they'd spent $30,000 fancy-fying an old car. That same amount of money would have bought both their kids a pretty nice college education, or at least the start of it, and the kids could have bought a fleet of fancy old cars.

Put me down with the charcoal crowd, for flavor and tradition and all those good reasons. Plus, cooking over charcoal (or wood) is an art. People can give you tips and pointers, but you have to personally burn up a few steaks before you really "get" how to cook over a real non-gas fire.

And don't let the "hassle" of charcoal cooking stop you from making a single steak for yourself. You're worth it!

As a GI, I used to run into American tourists overseas and they were just painfully annoying to be around. Not because they were Americans, but because they were "the moneyed class" that can afford to travel overseas and expect the planet's people to kiss their asses.

Ah, he's an inarticulate anti-social loner who suddenly got attention when he got elaborate tats.

And anybody who calls themselves "punk rock" had damn sure better know it means something besides "ooh, I'm a rebel!"

When you get to a certain point in your military career, it's all about who you know and what "group" you're part of. If the person who's signature can get you promoted notices that you're badmouthing the "all-faiths" monthly prayer breakfast, your career ain't goin nowhere.

I'd wager a lot of the nastier comments are from people who've never personally known or befriended a transgender person. The ones I've known, both MTF (male to female), said it's not like getting tattoo or some other body mod. In their minds, it's a birth defect that can be corrected so their bodies will match the gender they know themselves to be.

Also, I used to work with a woman who had Frasier Syndrome. She was born with all the female parts, but had XY chromosomes -- making her genetically male. She wasn't a transgender person. She considered herself all female and did not look like, nor want to be surgerized into a man.

Wow. I lived in Korea for a couple years (87-90) and wondered if they still believed that air conditioning caused asphyxiation by removing oxygen from the air. Don't remember the fan phobia, though. Just that they had a big preference for oscillating fans.

As for ondol (charcoal) heating, I thought that had been phased out a couple decades ago, in favor of safer methods. Loved the heated floors when I was there, though. Great for napping.

Yep, reading this one requires a paid subscription. Simply filling out their info (with bogus name and address, of course) takes you to a page that gives you the first paragraph. If you want to read more, it's by paid subscription only. I'm not that curious about the guy.

By all means, do watch "Control Room" if you get a chance. Al-Jazeera's policy is to show a story from all angles -- even if some of those angles are radical or just plain false. Al-Jazeera assumes it's audience is capable of analyzing the stories and coming up with their own opinions based on what's presented.

US news shows are all about making money via the ratings that attract advertisers. What grabs ratings? Shocking news and celebrity crap that manipulates viewers emotions instead of educating their brains or assuming they're willing to analyze what's presented.

That reminds me: Thanks for the Book of Spam from that long ago contest, Alex! It and you are awesome.
