SparkS's Comments

It's an interesting story but I really don't think it's that big of a deal. The story answered a question I had whether they had the stool ready or had to cobble one together in a hurry. Since the Harrier can fly horizontally and/or vertically it seems to me the pilot wouldn't have to see any visual clues at all. He simply just follows the instructions he's getting on the radio from the LSO. "...go forward very slow 3, 2, 1 feet. Stop! Slowly move straight down." Easy peasy! Looked like he bounced it in pretty hard. Maybe they need to add some padding to the stool.

What's really cool is watching an aircraft hit the barrier on a carrier. I saw that once while on the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67). Saw a RN Harrier land and take off on the JFK once also. Was neat seeing it take off w/o the catapult.

(USN & USMC carrier pilots are the BEST in the world!)

I never did figure out why it worked I just know that it did occasionally work and was funny as all get out when it did. For some reason even though the handrails moved with the stairs there was enough slippage to allow it to be pulled backwards. I think the way to see if it still works is to try it on a bunch of escalators in different stores and malls. I would guess all escalators in a mall are probably made by the same company so if one doesn't work they probably all won't work. Then again it might be an anomaly. It won't cost anything to see if it still works.

Doesn't answer my point. Being trapped in the car has nothing to do with whether there's a child in the back seat. If you can't get out fast and are burned to a cinder
in a fire it's more likely 2, or more, will die. You can't get the child out if you can't get out rapidly. Is a very unsafe idea.

They can also be a LOT of fun! I learned this really neat trick a long time ago.
Possibly during the time I worked for Banker's Trust in Manhattan in the mid
'60s right out of High School? I think my father may have taught it to me. While riding an escalator DOWN and your hand is grabbing the handrail pull your hand back. You can pull the handrail backwards. It is quite hilarious to watch everyone's arms go back at the same time. What's great is no one can tell it is you causing it. I haven't tried it in a very long time and I do remember it didn't always work but is easy enough to try and I guarantee you will laugh if it works. GGGG Only works on the down escalators if I remember correctly. I'm not sure if it worked on both handrails or only one.

I recently read three excellent books by the British author Ben Macintyre.

Operation Mincemeat - all about this marvelous plan of deception.

Agent Zigzag - about Eddie Chapman a British double agent who did such a great job fooling the Germans he was awarded the Iron Cross by Hitler. Only Brit to receive it. He was a real scoundrel but he served England well.

Double Cross - The true story of the D-Day spies. BTW all German spies in England were nabbed and 'turned' to work for the Brits. They hanged the ones that wouldn't cooperate. GGGG The point is that the Brits caught them all.

All three books are excellent and I highly recommend them. Can all be gotten on Amazon.com. There are at least 3 movies about the last two stories.

Almost forgot - Thanks MC!

I had just landed at JFK airport and was standing at the end of a really long line to
pass through customs. I was in my USN dress blues and had my sea bag. The line was moving real slow. I happened to look over at a customs agent standing at an
unopened station. He signaled for me to his station and processed me through customs.

Another time while in my dress blues with my sea bag I was riding the Pennsylvania RR from Philly up to my parents home in Doylestown. As the conductor was making his rounds I had my wallet ready to pay for a ticket.
I hadn't had time to buy one at the window. When the conductor got to me
he simply said "that's okay, no charge."

Two random acts of kindness that I still remember fondly nearly 50 years later.
Neither one was an earth shattering event on their own but they sure meant
a lot to me!

I'll try to put GGG (grins) if I am being facetious. As for rhetoric you're on your own.

The suggested wording for the 3rd poll option looks like a winner.

I knew that, I was feeling a bit froggy then. I hope Alex wasn't looking for alligators
on that road. GGG

I made a comment to Alex and got two replies. Neither one from the one I commented to. It looks like neither one understood my point which was it seemed that by "refusing to participate" they are actually participating even if their vote isn't counted.

True but they did win the SparkS "Alexandre Dumas Award". Known far and wide as the dumb-ass award.

Neatorama's Alex is not a dumb-ass though he does have a similar first name to Monsieur Dumas.

Are you familiar with the Dumas method?
