Why is that awesome. Pluto doesn't qualify as a planet. To my mind nor does Mercury. The best "planet" test I saw put forward was the Ganymede test. Ganymede is a moon and therefore, says the test, anything which is smaller than Ganymede can't be considered a planet.

Anyhoo, if Pluto is a planet then so is Ceres.

Neat. My son needs new bookshelves. I already made him TARDIS doors for his bedroom so maybe a bookcase next.

Oh and BTW I doubt you could sell these in stores, not without licencing them from the BBC at any rate.

@AW didn't you bother to read the text?

As the article states there are no official sources for the Hugh Williams legend. Indeed it sounds more like a maritime myth than a legitimate story.

I'm not convinced by the author's incredibly limited research. For example he confidently states that the name Hugh in Welsh would be spelled Hew. I think you'll find it's Huw.

Most likely it has some basis in truth which has since been somewhat embroidered. Men named Hugh Williams being among the survivors of, say, three shipwrecks is something of a coincidence but doesn't make a great myth. OTOH if you amend the story to make Hugh the sole survivor then that gives the story more of a kick. Make the wrecks happen on the same date and add a few more wrecks and your story will grow legs.

Where I come from snowball fights are always competitive. However they are not an organized sport. There's one thing you can gaurantee will take the fun out of almost any pastime it is to turn it into an organized sport.

@Melissa how naive are you? The Hungarian state have no intention to care for these people, they just want them off the street. The ultimate aim of this law is to have these people leave the country. If the state had any intention to care for the homeless they could do so without passing this idiotic law.

This law is almost certainly in contravention of the ECHR and as such the EU will hopefully be taking action against the Hungarian government.

I think the problem with failing somebody for cheating is that of evidence. How do you prove conclusively that somebody was cheating? What is the evidential requirement?

When I was at college a male student was accused of cheating because much of an assignment was identical to that of a female student. He received a failing grade even though the only "evidence" the college had was that his essay was handed in later than hers. He continued to deny having cheated and threatened the college with legal action. Finally the female student admitted responsibility, although she claimed that she had paid the male student's flatmate to write her assignment and that he must have copied the essay. The flatmate was not a student of the same college and so could not be punished by the college.

It's been done before, several times. And yet every time some designer does it they seem to think they are creating something that will shock.

Many powerful images, but I have three problems with the selection.

1. Given that we are restricted to 45 images and therefore a maximum of 45 stories why have more than one image of the same story?

2. Although there are some very powerful images there are also some which are no more than snaps. For example the image of Obama signing a bill is not a powerful image it's a pretty average snap. While the story itself may be meaningful the image, in and of itself, is not.

3. And finally it seems to be a curiously US biased view of world news. Sure it's from a US site, but there are images and stories there that would have no impact on anybody from outside the US. While other powerful images from stories of worldwide significance have been ignored.

@ted why would he not be able to recover the recording? So long as he could recover the camera he would be able to remove the memory card. And $2400 isn't so much for a decent quality camera, lens and tripod.

What I want to know is why the cameraman didn't see the wave coming and do something about it. $2400 is a lot to pay for common sense 101, but maybe at that price the lesson will sink in.

I like the one that reads "Call Cuffie For Serious Injuries". To be fair though, by the look of that guy he could certainly cause a few ;)

It's interesting that the victims sued the perp. In most countries that just couldn't happen while criminal action was pending. That is almost as ridiculous as the fact that the perp is suing the victims.
