I wouldn't mind going back to school for that course work, pick up a couple fun classes on the side. There are already classes that study folklore, children's literature and gothic lit. This would be a natural in conjunction with the lit and creative writing crowd.
A grin isn't indicative of shame or lack thereof. Some people respond to scolding with a smile, not because they're being insolent but because that's the way they deflect the stress of the situation. If a kid is smiling while I'm dressing him down, it doesn't mean that I demand "you think this is funny?" The real assessment of whether this works or not is if the behavior is repeated.
Considering that this is the mother's idea, and that this comes after several previous attempts to curb the antisocial behavior, I can't say that it's a bad idea. At the very least, there are several kids back in the school that are happy to see a disruptive child gone even for a day. Despite what people think of kids today, I've found that the vast majority of my students are wonderfully behaved, curious and even a bit smart-alecky, and that one or two problem kids annoy not just the teacher but everyone else.
Good lord, teaching is hard as hell at times, and I knew it would be. Doesn't mean I can't vent about some of the hardships of the job and the things that make difficult work even more difficult. I appreciated the glimpse into animation.
And God forbid we be happy about a dog who'll get to survive and have a chance at a happy home because it displays the submissive behavior required in good pets toward their owners.
If someone does a better job than everyone else, then they should reap the rewards no matter the race. If that means that certain colleges have larger populations of one minority group, so be it. It will raise the bar for everyone. Intelligence and diligence is not the purview of one race.
Don't do anything to offend Sharia law--does that include being gay, wearing anything less than a full burqa, going out without a male chaperone, educating our girls, worshipping any other religion or no religion at all?
It isn't true that the best schools are the ones with the most money. In El Paso where I teach, one of our schools receives no Title I funding because of our demographics. We have no infocus in every classroom, no smart boards, no classroom computers, nothing but desks, chalk, a projector and whatever the teacher buys herself. And yet we're also one the top performing schools in the district, and this with a sizable population of students who are stilllearning English. The school's performance is based on the teachers inside the school.
While I think the above article is more accurate than some give it credit for, in a way I wish they were right that fewer people were moving here--and not just for oil jobs which is such a cliche notion, as if all we have are cows and drills--because some of those people moving will settle and then vote in the very restrictive taxes that they moved to escape.
