I reckon mind-controlling[1] snail parasites are weirder.

I couldn't understand why I kept getting spam for Mother's Day flowers - in the UK it's called Mothering Sunday and this year was on the 22nd of March. Never occured to me that other countries have it on different days, but it turns out that it's very varied...

The "gross" aspect is one of those things that either bothers you or it doesn't. It doesn't bother me a bit - I couldn't understand the fuss about face transplants when the French started doing it some years ago. They had a similar problem when a Frenchman had an arm transplant and later had it removed because of psychological problems.
Seems odd - an arm's an arm, a face is a face, it's no more me than my (now largely missing) hair or my big toe or my appendix.

My wife went back to work when our daughter was four months old and I had both kids to myself. They've been the happiest years of my life, it's just a shame they're now old enough for me not to really be able to justify staying at home. Particularly since the wife's been made redundant - from the Job Centre.

So many stories behind all those photos.
Also - it reminds you how powerful black and white photography is.

It reads as if they were just casually drowning spiders and noticed this as a side-effect. I'm sure that wasn't what happened!

It's missing from the source code, too. Often when a link's missing it's in the source in a mangled form, but not this time.
Anyway - try this...

Marilyn:- Yes, but I don't hunt, so I don't know what rules are being broken. My point is that the writer has assumed a level of knowledge in his/her reader that may not be there. It's very easy to do when writing about something you're interested in if you lose touch with who your intended audience is supposed to be.
Are the animals out of season, protected species, in a sanctuary, only to be hunted with bow and arrow, too old, too young, breeding, migrating, nursing, unfashionable, inedible or what?

There's a presupposition here, which is that the reader knows what animals you are allowed to hunt, and where, and when.
Personally, I haven't a clue so the whole story (not the Neatorama link but the NatGeo one) misses. It even says in the article that many people are unclear about the rules - but fails to say what they are.

She certainly loves her grub(s). The kids are enchanted.

I'm surprised that anyone supports torture, since as I understand it, it's been shown repeatedly not to produce reliable information.
It costs a lot, it's degrading and damaging for torturer and victim, and it's politically damaging, if not at once then certainly later.
If I didn't already know that governments have a history of pursuing policies that sound good but in practice don't work, I'd wonder why they keep doing it?

It's why Microsoft are having trouble. XP wasn't brilliant, but it's largely stable and users couldn't see any point in upgrading to Fester.
