I laughed. I pet sat for a couple of birds once (and a menagerie of other animals) and the parrot was the best- he knocked on the door (I opened it before I caught on), did the phone ringing, yelled at the other animals, had 1-sided phone conversations and repeated his owners fights. He also mimicked one of the other birds squawking and then yelled at him. Best vacation job ever!
thanks for this post- a very interesting map. I'm surprised at how much of Asia (specifically the less developed parts) and Eastern Europe are. I hope someone is making a t-shirt out of this!
has been an interesting post to follow comments on. I'd just like to say that I don't buy into the social & economic inequality thing- since when does being poor mean you have to eat junk- specifically enough of the stuff to get Type II diabetes? Self control will have a lot to do with it, as will long established eating (and drinking- hello Mountain Dew!) habits. I grew up pretty poor but we didn't gorge ourselves on the stuff that causes obesity and increases your risk for diabetes. That's just a whole lot of 'all-the-bad-stuff-that-happens-to-me-is-not-my-fault-it's-yours'
there have been a few for me but I can't come up with them right now. :( Really enjoyed the post though! Well- ok- I avoid using 'egregious' out loud because I know it's not pronounced like I think it is but I can't ever remember just how it IS pronounced...
I was surprised at the range of emotions that rose up in me as I read this post. At first- it was just a very strong dislike towards the man who did the spying. Then, when I read about his poverty and difficulties in later life, I sort of felt sorry for him. But really, when you think of someone out there fishing around for other people to deceive people who trust them- it's not so hard to feel that he got what he deserved. On the other hand, it was pretty rotten of the Japanese government not to stand my him. After all, they apparently wanted him to do what he did.
