From dictionary.com [defining "racism"]:

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Accusations of racism are thrown about so handily that we lose sight of what the word really means. "That one" is a way of indicating another person, albeit awkwardly phrased, without using the person's name. It makes sense if you've studied Spanish, although the casual use of "ese" ("that") for young Hispanic men to refer somewhat derogatorily to one another isn't exactly the same thing.

*shrug* It's her money. Although I would consider the amount excessive considering the surgery wasn't life-saving in nature, I wouldn't condemn her for spending it, if she could afford to do so.

P.S. I love the way the British spell "meow" as "miaow."

I've known for years that there's an Alaskan island that's only a few miles from a Russian island. Not sure why the rest of the world is just now discovering it, or why it was Anderson Cooper-worthy.

Well yeah, it's always easy to be generous with other people's money. I heard today that the value of the bad mortgages was around $100 billion. So where was the rest of the money going to go?

>Yet another reason to never to go to Texas.

Or, maybe, yet another reason never to break into someone else's house?

Sorry, but it works my nerves when people think that because of the castle doctrine, Texans are all a bunch of crazy gun nuts like the guy on "The Simpsons" who dances and shoots his pistols in the air.

Yes, this was excessive interpretation of the castle doctrine. Yes, he shot a child in the back. These points are true and shameful. I've never been to Laredo, but understand that at one point it was the auto-theft capital of Texas. If I lived in a high-crime area where police were not likely to show up quickly or even at all, I'd want to be able to defend my person and property. And, as someone else pointed out, these kids weren't apprehended while doing something you know, lawful.

I'm sorry for the death, but please don't be blind and bigoted about the entire state because of this.

Knit, knit, knit...crocheting truly is the red-headed stepchild of the crafting world. I get the Yarnworks catalog, and fully 75% of the patterns are for knitters. That's about the usual distribution at craft stores, too. If you can't guess, I'm a crocheter. I guess I need to teach myself knitting.

Thank you for sharing this! I'm embarrassed to admit that I hadn't even heard of the Paralympics before this. As others commented on the Boston Globe website, this has received very little media coverage, and that's a shame.

There were some absolutely gorgeous photos in that article. I was glad to see some husky love there. Huskies do have the most amazing eyes. Our Husky/Akita mix is blonde/cream-colored with blue eyes, and as someone said before, it's an ice blue, almost white. She gets comments everywhere she goes.

My family once had a Basenji/Australian cattle dog mix named T.J. He had the coloring of a red Basenji, but his fur was slightly fuzzy rather than smooth, and he had one blue eye, one brown. It's such an unexpected effect, whether human or animal, and quite striking.

I had to restrain myself from staring at the man I saw in a car rental office at Washington Dulles airport several years ago. One eye was icy pale blue, the other the same shade blue, but with the lower half of it filled in with a deep, chocolate brown. Arresting. (It didn't hurt that he was cute, too...)
