Film Noir And Animated Comedy Collide In This Fun Short Film

(Video Link)

Film Noir and comedy are two genres that rarely play well together, but just like on a shrimp and peanut butter sandwich two totally different flavors can sometimes taste great together.

Spotter is an animated short that does a great job of combining both genres into one fun, and funny, short story.

There’s the hard bitten detective type dude, the shifty henchman, and the man(?) of mystery that ties the whole story together, and like any good Noir story there’s a mystery to solve and an explosive reveal that will blow your mind!

Spotter was created by students at the Gobelins School Of The Image in Paris, France, and like most Gobelins productions I've seen it looks great and tells a good story.

These Rich Jerks Can't Live Without Their Hulk Hands

(Video Link)

These yacht riding, top shelf booze guzzling, captain hat sporting, rich jerks in this hilarious music video love wearing Hulk hands.

They feel naked without their favorite green foam accessories, and the sense of comfort and entitlement they feel when they slip those Hulk hands on over their puny human hands makes them so proud they just gotta rap about it to whoever will listen.

If you’re listening then you’ll most likely want to know that the Hulk hand lovin’ lads are named David Ebert and Douglas Widick, aka Corporate, and their ridiculous entry into the annals of interwebs WTFism brings to mind sketches from Kroll Show, Mr. Show and Kids In The Hall. *Hulk hand dabs*

The Lost Art Of The Gaudy VHS Cover

As media becomes increasingly digitized there’s one thing which will be sorely missed by fans- the cover art. VHS covers were a wonder to behold as you strolled down the aisles of the video store, and even though many of them featured artwork that had very little to do with the movie itself the cover art was often a factor in deciding which movie to rent.

In fact, many VHS covers attempted to be as lurid as possible without showing full nudity or gore to tempt viewers into choosing that particular flick instead of the one with the boring cover.

Explore the lost art of the VHS cover at VHS Cover Junkie, where it's always a blockbuster when there are Hollywood bad boys on the cover.

Boyhood- A Film Featuring A Child Star Actually Growing Up

(Video Link)

Many filmmakers feel the only way to show a character grow up during a movie is to actually shoot the film over a period long enough to allow the actor to age naturally, but this is generally not feasible because Hollywood demands sacrificial offerings movies on a yearly, if not quarterly, basis.

A new film called Boyhood is about to change those rules, because this feature film depicts a child star actually growing up during production, a feat that took twelve years of filming to accomplish.

Director Richard Linklater wanted to make a film that showed "a parent-child relationship that follows a boy from the 1st through the 12th grade and ends with him going off to college", but to do that he had to film scenes once a year for twelve years, changing the script as needed to keep up with how the boy changed in real life over the years.

It's a bold experiment in humanistic filmmaking, one which movie studios are unlikely to repeat anytime soon.

Amazingly Detailed How To Train Your Dragon Cake

How To Train Your Dragon is one fantastically fun, and fantastic looking, 3D animation franchise, so it goes without saying that a cake inspired by the series would have to be mighty good looking as well.

Richard's Cakes didn't shy away from this draconian challenge, and their creation is so good that it won them first prize in the Decorative Exhibit category at the Cake International event.

With characters that look like they're ready to leap off the cake and fly around the room, an predominately green and brown color palette appropriate for dragons, and an extremely lively, animated look to the characters and overall scene this cake makes me very hungry...for animated adventure!

Who Wins- Hot Celeb Guy Or Hawt Kitteh?

There are two things people love to look at online- pics of celebs and pics of cats, but who would win in a fame battle between the famous and the furry, the he-so-fine and the feline?

My money’s on the kittehs, because not everyone is interested in celebrity culture, but it’s really a matter of personal preference, and they both have plenty of visual appeal.

This is a battle between two internet heavyweights that is for you to decide, as BuzzFeed presents the most important battle of the 21st century- 31 Hot Celeb Guys Versus Cats.

They pose the same, they have the same look on their faces, but which one is more hottererer?

If Video Game Characters Went To Your High School

Video game characters can start to feel like old friends after a while, especially because you end up spending a really long time hanging out with them in game, doing everything you can to save their lives and help them achieve fame and fortune.

They become so familiar to us that we can almost imagine what it would have been like to attend high school with these virtual superstars, with cool guy Sonic tearing it up in varsity track and field, nerdy little Link who brings a weapon to school if you push him too far, and Kirby- the cute little social butterfly who is liked by everyone and always has a smile on his face. Sounds about right!

Taco Bell To Launch New Upscale Restaurant Chain

Taco Bell is the last fast food restaurant you’d associate with the fancy pants crowd, but CEO Greg Creed is aiming to change that by opening a new, upscale fakey Mexican food restaurant called the US Taco Co. and Urban Taproom.

If the ridiculously long name isn’t enough of a mouthful, chew on this-Greg says their aim is to attract customers who are "edgy in how they live their lives but not necessarily in how they eat."

The first two overpriced taco varieties they have announced are the “one percenter”-lobster and garlic butter taco with cabbage slaw, and the “winner winner”-a chicken taco with brown gravy.

Taco Bell may be movin' on up like the Jeffersons, but will their new demographic accept them with open arms, or send them back to Junk Food Junction?

Ronald McDonald Gets A Fancy McMakeover

Ronald McDonald was (generally) cute in cartoon form, (often) downright creepy in real life, and (arguably) never seemed like an appropriate spokesperson for a fattening burger chain like McDonalds, especially when he was standing next to the more likely candidate- his morbidly obese pal Grimace.

Clowns brought the festive feel to burger chains back in the day, but nowadays people seem a bit less enthusiastic about buying fast food from a burger shill in clown white, so McDonalds has decided to revamp Ronald's look by dressing him up in a mcfancy new blazer and striped mcshirt.

His new wardrobe was designed by Tony Award-winning theatrical designer Ann Hould-Ward, and the masterminds behind this mcmakeover want Ronald to play a bigger role in their new social media campaign "fun makes great things happen", yet somehow Ronald looks like less fun to me now.

Andy Warhol's Digital Artworks Discovered On Floppy Disks From 1985

Andy Warhol's exploration of new styles and techniques inspired many artists throughout his career, and he kept on breaking new artistic ground until his untimely death in 1987.

In 1985 Warhol was approached by Commodore International to create digital artworks on the Commodore Amiga 1000 using software called Graphicraft, but the images he created were thought to be lost until Cory Arcangel and the Carnegie Mellon Computer Club discovered these bold images on decaying floppy disks.

A documentary about the recovery of these digital artworks called "Trapped" will premiere at the Carnegie Library Lecture Hall in Pittsburgh on May 10th.

Digital artworks generally don’t command a very high price at auction, but something tells me Warhol’s digital works will be worth millions.

India's First Motion-Capture 3D Film Is A Colorful Trainwreck

(Video Link)

CGI animation is looking really good these days, and digital animators have a helping hand in the creative process thanks to motion capture technology, which allows actors to play the roles of CGI characters, making their movement far more realistic. However, mo-cap is still a relatively new tool, and some budding animators don’t have enough experience with mo-cap to utilize this powerful tool to the fullest.

Indian animators, for example, are just starting to create 3D animated features using mo-cap, and boy does their inexperience show!

Their first mo-capped film is called Kochadaiiyaan, and as much as I'd like to say India has a promising future in 3D animation this film looks like a colorful trainwreck. But don't take my word for it, watch the trailer and judge for yourself.

What If Forrest Gump Was Directed By Wes Anderson?

(Video Link)

Forrest Gump is one of those polarizing films that some people love and others find extremely cheesy. Wes Anderson films are similarly polarizing, with anti-Andersonites always picking fights with the pro-Wes set.

Louis Paquet is the filmmaker who brought the two together, not sure what his stance is on either one though, you'll have to check with him to see where he stands on this important issue.

So what would the opening credits of Forrest Gump have looked like if it was directed by Wes Anderson? Let’s just say there are a bunch of beautiful static shots of stuff from the movie, accompanied by a lively soundtrack created by DEVO alum Mark Mothersbaugh. Splendid!

How To Drink Beer All Night Without Getting Drunk

Jim Koch is a man who knows a thing or twenty about beer- he's the founder of the Boston Beer company, he helped design the Perfect Pint glass and he's the founder of Brewing The American Dream, a micro-lending program that has helped over 300 food and beverage companies get their start over the last ten years.

It's safe to say Jim loves him some beer, and he drinks beer every day yet never loses the taste for those delicious foamy suds, but how does he drink beer all the time without getting drunk?

His amazing secret is stupidly simple- he eats active yeast before drinking, one teaspoon per pint of beer he plans to drink that night. To make the yeast more palatable he mixes it in with yogurt, but warns that yeast "will mitigate – not eliminate – but mitigate the effects of alcohol!"

So the next time you don't feel like stumbling home from the pub try this simple trick and you'll be the last person standing!

The Fifth Element - 8-Bit Cinema Edition

(Video Link)

Cult classic sci-fi flick The Fifth Element is beloved by fans for its original sense of humor, vibrant characters, and truly unique twist on the sci-fi genre, but when TFE gets an 8-bit makeover the whole thing becomes even more far out!

Cinefix's conversion of The Fifth Element into a pixel-tastic, video game inspired animated short may not replace the original movie in the hearts of fans, but once again they have done a great job of making me long for an old school style video game that will never come out. *sigh*
