Beautiful Victorian Postcards Show How Little UK Landmarks Have Changed Over The Last 180 Years

NOW: The Blackpool Tower still remains but the ferris wheel has been replaced with other attractions in the present day.

English society has changed dramatically since the Victorian era, and if someone from that era could see how Britain looks today their heads would probably explode, and not just because they had their corsets cinched too tight.

But as much as societal norms have changed most landmarks in the UK have stayed the same, and if you want to see how little they've changed in the last 150+ years check out these vintage postcards from the 1800s.

THEN: A vintage postcard showing the view over the Northern Pier in Blackpool in the 1800s.

These souvenir postcards show us how landmarks like the Northern Pier in Blackpool, Trafalgar Square, the Parliament building, the British museum and Tower Bridge looked in the mid-1800s, and while England changes around them these landmarks keep calm and carry on being iconic.

THEN: A rare shot of Tower Bridge open during the 1800s and printed on a vintage postcard.

NOW: In the present day, Tower Bridge is still the most recognizable crossing spanning the River Thames.

Movie And TV Lines Nobody Ever Says In Real Life

Ask anyone to quote their favorite lines from movies and TV shows and they'll hit you with all kinds of lines like "Say hello to my little friend!", "Keep the change, you filthy animals!" and "I'll be back!".

But do you know which lines people never repeat? Cheesy lines like "we need to talk", "I have to do this alone" or "you were just what?".

And yet these lines are so overused in visual media we don't even notice them anymore, or rather we anticipate they'll be in pretty much every movie and TV show we watch so we completely overlook them when they're said.

Any conversation that starts out with "we need to talk" will be put off for as long as possible because we've been programmed by shows to know what comes next, just like when a character says "I have to do this alone".

But the cheesiest line to me is "You were just what?", which is used a lot in movies as well as books, since it's just makes the character who said it seem like an impatient jerk.

Brutally Honest Charts About Life

Some people have a hard time being brutally honest about their lives, but to be honest life will never have a hard time being brutal to them or anyone else, because life has days and months of pain and suffering but mere moments of joy.

"That was only 2 minutes??" - me

A post shared by Matt Shirley (@mattsurelee) on Jun 12, 2017 at 6:51pm PDT

Some people deal with this pain by finding an outlet, others use their mathematical minds to quantify the yin and yang of life, but Instagram user mattsurelee has found a happy medium between the two- by creating brutally honest charts about his life.

Sometimes the white board charts created by mattsurelee are sadly relatable, other times they make you feel better about yourself because your chart would look better than Matt's, but they're always funny!

This one gets harder the longer you think about it. Choose wisely.

Pastry Chef Attempts To Make Gourmet Gushers

Gushers are one of my snack food guilty pleasures, because they're a super crappy snack food, made with two kinds of corn syrup and all kinds of oils and preservatives, but they're so tasty I can eat a whole box in one sitting.

If only someone could create a gourmet version made with more wholesome ingredients that still tasted good, someone with experience creating gourmet versions of our favorite junk food.

Claire Saffitz from Bon Appétit is that someone, and she tried her hand at making gourmet Gushers only to realize why they'll always be mass produced crap- because they're way too big of a pain in the butt to make by hand!

The Original Locations Of Famous Restaurant Chains

Jack In The Box (6270 El Cajon Boulevard — San Diego, California)

Once a chain restaurant opens up locations all over the country, if not the world, we tend to forget that these food empires began with one original location.

At the top of the post you can see the original Jack In The Box location in my hometown of San Diego, California, opened by Robert O. Peterson in 1951 who converted his drive-in restaurant into a drive-thru.

Taco Bell is another chain that originated in Southern California and ended up making it big in the fast food world, opened in Downey by Glen Ball in 1962.

Taco Bell (7112 Firestone Blvd, Downey, California)

While their original location is now Seafood & Tacos Raul you can see why their restaurants were always mission-shaped with a bell on top.

And lastly let's get in to the pizza game with the Hut- this little "hut" is the original Pizza Hut restaurant, opened by brothers Dan and Frank Carney in scenic Wichita, Kansas back in 1958.

Pizza Hut (503 South Bluff St, Wichita, Kansas)

They named it Pizza Hut because they only had room on the sign for 9 letters, which means they could have named it Pizzazz, Pizza Den, Pizza Lab, Pizza Pie or Pizzaaaa! too...

Top 5 Film Adaptations Of All Time

People love to argue about whether the motion picture adaptation of a book is better or worse than the original literary source material, but in the end this subjective argument is a matter of perspective.

If you can't manage to read an entire book or "don't have the time" then the movie adaptation will always be better to you, and most people who read the book before they see the movie prefer the book version out of principle.

But even more subjective is the argument over which movie adaptations are the best of all time, and while you may not agree with all the selections on CineFix's list of the Top 5 Adaptations Of All Time this video will give you lots of material for discussion!

Here's the list:

Novel- Apocalypse Now, adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Heart Of Darkness

Non-Fiction- Adaptation, adaptation of Susan Orleans' The Orchid Thief

Play- Throne Of Blood, adaptation of Shakespeare's MacBeth

Graphic Novel- Oldboy, adaptation of Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi's manga Old Boy

Misc.- O Brother Where Art Thou, adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey

That Trippy Green Code In The Matrix Is Just A Bunch Of Sushi Recipes

There have been many arguments about what that trippy green code in The Matrix actually means, and any debater who has the least bit of experience with coding acts as if they're working on cracking the code.

But these strings of code are jumbles of Japanese hiragana, katakana and kanji, so they never seemed like proper computer code to me, and it turns out any wanna-be hacker who said they were code was fishing in the wrong data stream.

(YouTube Link)

In a recent interview with CNet production designer Simon Whiteley blew the lid off The Matrix's longest running mystery by revealing those strings of code are nothing but sushi recipes he found in his Japanese wife's cookbooks:

"I like to tell everybody that The Matrix's code is made out of Japanese sushi recipes," Whiteley, who's also lent his design talents to Babe (1995) and The Lego Movie (2014), told the publication. "Without that code, there is no Matrix."

Mr. It - Mimes Aren't Nearly As Scary As Monster Clowns

Mr.It by MIKELopez

Pikachu was exploring a sewer system in search of new pocket monsters for Ash to catch when he came across a funny looking fellow holding a balloon. The fellow had a clowny face that wasn't at all intimidating, but something about the way he so confidently strode up to Pika made the little guy wonder if he was looking for a battle. Suddenly Pika heard a voice in his head that said "don't worry little guy, we all fight down here", to which he replied "PIKA!" and let loose a bolt of lightning big enough to take down a Charizard...

Famous Album Covers Superimposed Over The Original Locations Where They Were Shot

So many album cover photos have been shot in New York City that you could spend days touring around the city trying to match all the photos up with the original location, or you could check out these photos by Bob Egan and save some time.

(cover by Rama)

Bob has spent years tracking down the spots in NYC where bands like Ramones, Simon & Garfunkel, Herman's Hermits and Steely Dan shot their cover photo, and he posts all his finds, including maps and detailed notes, on his website PopSpots.

(cover photo by Raeanne Rubinstein)

Bob is a real estate agent who takes his hobby very seriously, so in addition to all that info he shares on PopShots he takes the time to perfectly match up the superimposed album cover up with a photo of the original location.

That way you can really see what photographers like David Gahr, Raeanne Rubinstein and Bill Silano saw in the location they chose for those iconic covers.

Side-By-Side Examples Of How Disney Recycled Animation In Later Films

Disney animators literally wrote the book on creating incredibly lifelike animation and characters that come to life on the screen, it's called The Illusion Of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston.

And in the beginning Disney artists and animators came up with all kinds of clever yet time-consuming ways to make their animation look better than any of the stuff the other studios were putting out, setting the bar high for this relatively new artform.

But hard times hit Disney's feature animation division in the late-60s, and budget cuts forced the animators to find new ways to keep a cohesive look yet cut down on the cost of the animation process.

So they decided to recycle old sequences with similar characters in similar situations to make something old new again in half the time and for far less money, the same reason they introduced 3D backgrounds in films like Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin.

Now Disney animator Wolfgang Reitherman claims they didn't start recycling clips to save time or money but because they "wanted to stick to what they knew would do well", but I'm sure it didn't hurt that they were saving money as well.

A Dark 'Riverdale'-Style Parody Of 'Peanuts'

Archie and the Riverdale gang are so sappy sweet, and their adventures are so tame, that their comics are suitable for all ages, which is a strong selling point for Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang too.

But these days even G-rated franchises like Archie and Peanuts have received gritty R-rated reboots, so it was only a matter of time before these two super vanilla franchises became mashed up in a parody video.

Thankfully, Jimmy Fallon did a pretty great job of showing what Peanuts would look like as a Riverdale-style crime drama, and he even found a way to work in the Peanuts dance!
