Helicopter Hoists Horse Out Of A 60-Foot Ravine

A horse trapped in a 60-feet ravine was saved by California firefighters. They used a harness and a helicopter as they hoisted the poor creature out of the ravine. Lola, the 8-year-old horse, fell down a ravine at Caspers Wilderness Park in San Juan Capistrano after bucking her rider, as UPI detailed:

Firefighters said the Orange County Fire Authority technical rescue team's helicopter was summoned to the scene after rescuers determined the terrain was too rough to attempt to walk Lola out of the ravine.
A veterinarian sedated Lola so she could be harnessed and air-lifted to safety.
Lola was reunited with her owner, who was not injured from being thrown from the horse.

Super Pigs Do Exist

A wild pig population that’s growing at a rapid pace is terrifying experts. Called a “feral swine bomb,” these pigs have a population of at least six million and are growing quickly. These super pigs can bear piglets at only three months old! Most of these wild pigs are a mixture of domestic breeds and European wild boar, so they get massive benefits from all that genetic mixture, as Yahoo News details:

The wild pig population has “expanded from 17 states to at least 39 over the last three decades” and causes an estimated $2.5 billion in damage a year, The Atlantic said.
“I’ve heard it referred to as a feral swine bomb,” said Dale Nolte, manager of the National Feral Swine Damage Management Program at the USDA to The Atlantic. “They multiply so rapidly. To go from a thousand to two thousand, it’s not a big deal. But if you’ve got a million, it doesn’t take long to get to 4 [million], then 8 million.”

Happy 60th Anniversary To Nixon’s Unfinished Sandwich!

Okay, this might seem unusual, but hey, it’s been sixty years since late US President Richard Nixon didn’t finish his sandwich. But how did we know that? Steve Jenne, 74, of Sullivan, Illinois, preserved Nixon’s half-eaten bison barbeque sandwich when the president left on September 22, 1960. Jenne preserved the sandwich by storing it in his freezer for decades, as Oddee details:

But how come Jenne came to possess the lunch of Nixon, whose legacy would years later become forever tarnished in the Watergate scandal?
For answers, let’s accelerate to 88 mph and take a trip back in time. We find ourselves in the city of Sullivan on that more or less fateful date: 9/22/1960.
In case any Europeans are reading this, that’ll be 22/9/1960. Don’t get too confused, now.
On this date, Nixon was out on his presidential campaign. He was running against a Massachusetts senator, one John F. Kennedy.
As we know from history, a couple months later Kennedy would win the presidency. Nixon would have to wait until 1969 for his turn in the White House.
But on this September day, Nixon was in Sullivan on a campaign trip. For lunch, he was served the aforementioned bison barbeque sandwich.
Whether he wasn’t all that hungry or just straight-up didn’t like the sandwich has been lost to history. The facts are that he ate about half of it before proceeding to the park where he was supposed to debate Kennedy. However, Kennedy failed to show up, so Nixon took the chance to give a speech of his own.
While he was speaking, Steve Jenne – then a 14-year-old Boy Scout – kept an eye on the Senator’s unfinished lunch.
“Being the good Boy Scout that I was, I stood there and guarded that sandwich,” Jenne recounted to the University of Illinois.

This Fish Statue Looked So Obscene That It Was Demolished

A fish statue in Morocco has sparked outrage and controversy from social media users. Located in the coastal town of Mehdia, the statue, which shows two peach-colored fish jumping into the air, was called ‘pornographic’. Some locals complained about the local government’s decision to erect the statues instead of spending money elsewhere, as the Daily Mail detailed:

The mockery and outrage was so intense that local authorities in the coastal town of Mehdia began demolishing the statues on Thursday
'People in Kenitra and Mehdia told authorities they want reforms in the city. And authorities bring them these statutes,' one social media quoted by Morocco World News said.
'Pornographic fish. People in Kenitra asked for reforms, authorities [brought them this],' another posted.
Mehdia, where the statues are located, is in Kenitra province but is not part of the city of Kenitra.

This Fashion Show At Home Ended In The Pool

I believe that the models in this story deserve the highest praise or a pay raise. Christian Siriano decided to have a fashion show in his backyard in Westport, Connecticut. Fashion editors and guests sat socially distanced, but the models strutted on very squelchy-looking grass and crossed a small bridge over Siriano’s pool in their elaborative outfits and high heels. The Daily Beast has more details:

the models, decked in all manner of vision-obscuring ruffles, tiered gowns and diaphanous skirts and wearing HEELS somehow walked as if this were the most natural thing in the world. There was the odd stumble. Most of us would have ended up on our asses with one step.
The clothes, as ever, were for women of different shapes and sizes—even the strangest outfit, which looked like it had lots of black creatures squashed on to it. Another dress was covered in flowers.
Siriano told WWD that it had been the most expensive fashion show he had ever produced, that Sarah Jessica Parker had supplied the shoes, and that the show had been inspired by movies like Clueless (Alicia Silverstone is a friend of Siriano’s), and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, where Christina Applegate ends up hosting a fashion show at home, bridges over the pool.

Uber, But For Evicting People

Everyone is trying their best to make ends meet in these troubling times. Many people are looking for more ways to earn more money or expand their businesses. The new startup Civvi seized the opportunity to establish their business when unemployment is widespread and a lot of people can’t pay their rent. This company aims to make it easy for the landlords to hire eviction agents, as Vice details:

Helena Duncan, a Chicago-based paralegal who also participates in housing activism, saw a Craigslist post from Civvl while searching for jobs. The ad alarmed her.
"It's fucked up that there will be struggling working-class people who will be drawn to gigs like furniture-hauling or process-serving for a company like Civvl, evicting fellow working-class people from their homes so they themselves can make rent," she told Motherboard.
In its Craigslist ads, posted across the country, Civvl explains the opportunity plainly: "There is plenty of work due to the dismal economy."
"Unemployment is at a record high and many cannot or simply are not paying rent and mortgages," the ads state. "We are being contracted by frustrated property owners and banks to secure foreclosed residential properties."
Civvl aims to marry the gig economy with the devastation of a pandemic, complete with signature gig startup language like "be your own boss," and "flexible hours," and "looking for self-motivated individuals with positive attitudes:" "FASTEST GROWING MONEY MAKING GIG DUE TO COVID-19," its website says. "Literally thousands of process servers are needed in the coming months due courts being backed up in judgements that needs to be served to defendants."

Virtual Swimwear Models Are A Thing Now

Fashion shows are now moving towards a heavily tech-based mode of presentation. Virtual models now take over the runway, partnering with savvy technical creative companies and programs to build a show that can advertise and showcase their garments well. Forbes cites Miami Swim Week as an example of brands relying on technology to showcase their garments:

Despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year, the technological risk became reality at Miami Swim Week. Swimwear presenters hadn’t the choice to stay idle but rather were pushed forward in a rough and ready manner. With limited luxuries and hard work, there is an opportunity to help the industry envision new ways to support the swimwear industry overall. More to the point, technology is an important and much-needed platform for the swimwear marketplace.
"It was a beautiful thing to witness technology and fashion merge ogether during Paraiso Miami Beach. As we enter into this dawn of this new normal, technology came to save the day for these designers to be able to show their collections digitally - in real time and across all different platforms from Instagram TV to YouTube and other web based portal’s.
The Diigitals are utilizing the rising accessibility of new technologies and taking the first steps into a new frontier of digital exploration. Within this collaborative hub, they demonstrate the potential of 3D fashion modeling and showcase its applications for innovative brands. The new era in creative seemingly erase the boundaries between real time reality and the digital world. Leading the charge into this new synthetic landscape is Shudu, the enigmatic and technical muse who's inspiring a new generation of artists. In a sense, she is the first of a generation but I assure you there will be many more like her in the years to come!

Microsoft Buys Bethesda For A Whopping $7.5B

In a shocking news that was a major point of discussion for video game fans and enthusiasts, Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks (developers of Skyrim and Doom) for $7.5 billion. How does this acquisition fit into Microsoft’s Xbox strategy? The Verge details:

The immediate and inevitable reaction from consumers focused, naturally, on competition, and whether future Bethesda titles will become Xbox exclusives. It’s a sensible concern — why, after all, would any company in an industry as cutthroat as gaming purchase a major entertainment brand if not to deprive its primary rival the ability to distribute coveted intellectual property on competing hardware? But that’s a question for the old Microsoft, the one that tried competing with Sony in an exclusivity game that ultimately kept it perpetually lagging behind throughout the Xbox One generation. (Xbox chief Phil Spencer tells Bloomberg the immediate plan is to evaluate multiplatform releases on a “case-by-case basis.”)
Microsoft is no longer playing the same game as Sony, and the Bethesda purchase may well make that point clearer than ever before. Sony has followed a tried-and-true strategy of acquiring promising developers and nurturing them over many years to produce large sequel-friendly franchises like Spider-Man and Horizon Zero Dawn. It also maintains strong relationships with independent Japanese partners, like From Software and Square Enix, to help maintain its edge so that the new Final Fantasy game or a Demon’s Souls remake comes to PlayStation first.

This Clock Tells The Time Remaining Before The Earth’s Deadline

Now, that’s a way to tell people how much time we have left before the Earth gives up on us! Gan Golan and Andrew Boyd reprogrammed Metronome’s digital clock in Manhattan to show how much time our planet has left before it succumbs to global warming and climate change. The digital clock also serves as a call for action, for people to  reverse the effects of climate change before it’s too late, as the New York Times details:

On Saturday at 3:20 p.m., messages including “The Earth has a deadline” began to appear on the display. Then numbers — 7:103:15:40:07 — showed up, representing the years, days, hours, minutes and seconds until that deadline.
“This is our way to shout that number from the rooftops.” Mr. Golan said just before the countdown began. “The world is literally counting on us.”
The Climate Clock, as the two artists call their project, will be displayed on the 14th Street building, One Union Square South, through Sept. 27, the end of Climate Week. The creators say their aim is to arrange for the clock to be permanently displayed, there or elsewhere.

What Did We Use Before Toilet Paper Existed?

Before the rise of the ever helpful toilet paper, have you wondered what ancient humans used to wipe after going to the bathroom? Medieval literature professor Susan Morrison believes that question is difficult to answer, because we lack the archaeological record to support any claim. Experts however, have recovered some samples that can give us a hint about what people back then would use for their designated potty time, as Live Science details:

Throughout history, people have used everything from their own hands to corn cobs to snow to clean up after bowel movements. One of the oldest materials on record for this purpose is the hygiene stick, dating back to China 2,000 years ago, according to a 2016 study in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports. Hygiene sticks, also called bamboo slips, were wooden or bamboo sticks wrapped in cloth.
During the Greco-Roman period from 332 B.C. to 642 A.D., the Greeks and Romans cleaned their derrières with another stick called a tersorium, according to a feature in the BMJ. The tersorium, which had a sponge on one end, was left in public bathrooms for communal use. Some scholars argue that the tersorium may not have been used to clean people's behinds but the bathrooms they defecated in. People cleaned the tersorium by dumping it in a bucket of salt or vinegar water or by dipping it in running water that flowed beneath the toilet seats.

These 125M-Year-Old Dinosaurs Fossils Were Found Perfectly Preserved

Researchers discovered fossils that are perfectly preserved in the western Liaoning Province in China. The 125-million-year-old dinosaur fossils, named Changmiania liaoningensis (which means "eternal sleeper from Liaoning" in Chinese), were possibly trapped by a volcanic eruption, as Fox News details:

"These animals were quickly covered by fine sediment while they were still alive or just after their death," said the study's co-author and paleontologist Pascal Godefroit, in a statement.
C. liaoningensis was small compared to its larger herbivore brethren, such as the titanosaur. It was approximately 4-feet long and had "very powerful hind legs" to go with a long tail, which suggests the ancient ornithopod was a strong and fast runner and walked upright, similar to iguanodons.
“However, certain characteristics of the skeleton suggest that Changmiania could dig burrows, much like rabbits do today,” Godefroit added. “Its neck and forearms are very short but robust, its shoulder blades are characteristic of burrowing vertebrates and the top of its snout is shaped like a shovel. So we believe that both Changmiania specimens were trapped by the volcanic eruption when they were resting at the bottom of their burrows 125 million years ago.”
As for their perfect preservation, the researchers suggest the two dinosaurs were resting when they died.
