This Entire Pit Stop Is Just 2 Seconds Long

(Video Link)

I suspect that this video shows the Ferrari team at the Australian Grand Prix last year. Watch what a perfectly trained pit team can do. The car stops at 0:35. It moves at 0:37. In those 2 seconds, the team replaces all 4 wheels. Look at how well they work together--like the fingers on one hand.

The Simple Joy Of Fitting Things Into Things

There’s something very satisfying about discovering that something fits into something else, like fitting two shoes together, one inside the other, so they only take up one slot in your shoe rack, nesting bowls together perfectly in the cupboard, and figuring out that an orange fits perfectly in the space left inside an avocado after you pull out the pit.

A Tumblr called Things Fitting Perfectly Into Other Things explores the sheer delight we humans feel when we discover that things fit together so perfectly, and may inspire you to take a good, hard look around your house for things you can fit into other things. It’s not OCD, it’s the best way to save space!

10 Things You Didn't Know About South Park

(YouTube link)

This list of trivia about South Park reaffirms the fact that there’s nothing that show creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone won’t do. The only limit is the what Comedy Central will put up with. Alltime10s put this video together, and are holding a small poll about your favorite parts of South Park in the YouTube comments. -via Laughing Squid

Street Artist Replaces Billboard Ads With Classical Art

This isn’t the street art you’re used to- it isn’t created with spray paint or stencils, and it doesn’t mar the face of the urban environment in Paris. In fact, this unusual form of street art beautifies the cityscape, replacing advertising eyesores with classical works of art.

This is the work of street artist/city beautifier Etienne Lavie, who is on a mission to replace billboards all over the city of Paris with something people actually want to look at, such as classical paintings like "Liberty Leading The People" by Eugene Delacroix, in a project called "OMG who stole my ads?"

Eugene's cause is truly noble, although it's doubtful that the advertisers will agree when they find out that their billboards have been appropriated.

No School Today Due to Ice Ice, Baby

(YouTube link)

School is closed today at Durham Academy in Durham, North Carolina, because the state is covered with ice from winter storm Pax. Michael Ulku-Steiner and his assistant Lee Hark make the announcement with a musical video set to the tune of Vanilla Ice's song "Ice Ice Baby." All I got from our local school was a robocall. You can tell by the Olympic sweater that they recorded this in a mirror. Olympic sweater? Those things cost $600! Or they did, before they sold out. Oh yeah, it’s a private school. -via Viral Viral Videos

The Urban Green House Is Really Green

No, I don't mean that the Urban Green House is colored green, it's green in the eco-sense of the word. In fact, it's pretty much wood, concrete and black siding on the outside. So how is it green? Well, it is designed to be narrow, letting air flow through naturally during the summer while the wide roof and porch prevents excess sun from entering your home.

The design, by Eric Odor with Chris Meyer of SALA Architects, also features passive solar heating, bamboo floors, composite fiber-cement siding and other eco-friendly elements.

You can learn more about the beautiful house and catch more great pictures of it at Homes and Hues: The Urban Green House Emphasizes the Beauty of Natural Wood

Watch This Man Balance a Car on His Head for 33 Seconds

(Video Link)

John Evans holds the Guinness World Record for the balancing the heaviest car on one's head. How did he discover that he has this talent? It started while he was working as a bricklayer. He discovered that he could do his work faster if he carried bricks on his head, thus leaving both hands free.

Evans is enormously strong and has put that ability to work as an entertainer and strongman. Over the course of his career, Evans has balanced on his head a 357-pound car, 275 full pints of beer and a girl inside a flaming oil drum.

In this video, Evans lifts a gutted 352-pound car and balances it on his head for 33 seconds.

This is one of 10 weird automotive world records rounded up by Jalopnik. You can view the rest here.

Nursing Home Residents Re-Create Scenes From Their Favorite Movies

You’re never too old to have some photographic fun, and when life gets boring for retirement community residents in the Westphalia region of Germany they get all dressed up and re-enact scenes from some of their favorite movies.

The Essenes Contilia Group gathered seniors from ten different homes across the region, brought in wardrobes and props and shot these hilarious movie re-enactment shots for a calendar called Klassiker 2014, which was made strictly for the employees, residents and their families. The seniors look like they had a lot of fun starring in these Hollywood themed photos, and hopefully they'll be putting together another calendar for 2015.

Update: this odd tool is a Crandall hammer, it's a stone dressing tool made from several sharpened spikes which are held together with a frame and wedge. It was used to roughen the face of cut stone so that mortar would adhere to it. You learn something new every day! Erin Geddes guessed it was "For when you need to repair or make comfort adjustments on your bed of nails." Ha! That's good for a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! So was Edward's guess: "Neatorama's Ban Hammer." Yeah, this would be a good tool for that! Congratulations to both. See the answers to all the items of the week at the What Is It? blog.

Are Imperial Measurements Outdated?

(YouTube link)

Matt Parker from Number Hub explains how logical and intuitive our imperial system of measurement is. Why would anyone want to give up such a wonderful system to go metric? How boring it would be to know everything is a multiple of ten -and that you can relate units of length to units of volume, weight, and other dimensions! This video only deals with units of length. We imagine if he got started on imperial liquid volume measurements, such nonsense could go on all day. However, Parker does have a video on the odd way we measure paper. -via Viral Viral Videos

The Death of Jar-Jar

(YouTube link)

How do you make millions of Star Wars fans happy? You take a deleted scene from The Phantom Menace and edit it a little to make Jar-Jar Binks die. And there was much rejoicing in the galaxy.

But then things got back to normal, when the fans realize how easy it would have been for George Lucas to actually have used the scene to get rid of the most hated character in the entire Star Wars universe. And there was a disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in pain, but would never be silenced. -via Viral Viral Videos

Notorious Baldies

A man doesn't need hair on top to be attractive -women know that, but men still have a hard time dealing with losing their hair. A series of illustrations by Brazilian artist Fernando Perottoni shows us only bald heads, but they are famous bald heads. You know who they belong to, or you should! See all 14 illustrations at his site. Can you name them all? -via Everlasting Blort

Autocomplete Truths about Gender Inequality

Christopher Hunt of Ogilvy & Mather Dubai used Google autocomplete to bring attention to gender inequality in this print ad campaign for United Nations Women.

Hunt noted that the advertisements, titled Auto Complete Truth, used actual Google search autocomplete results, as queried on March 9, 2013. While different Google users in various countries may see different results, some of the autocompletes referenced in the ad showed in our own quick test (see below for the different autocomplete results for search queries for the exact term, but using "men" instead of "women.")

Put a Coin in the Busker's Hat and an Orchestra Will Appear

(Video Link)

“Best Coin Ever Spent” shows a tuxedo-wearing busker at the center of a Spanish town. The bass violin player patiently waits for someone to put a coin in his top hat. A little girl does so, so he begins playing. Then a cellist joins him. Then an oboist.

Instrument by instrument, an orchestra and choir form from performers emerging from nearby buildings. They play Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy,” a hymn set to the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s final symphony, Symphony #9.

This glorious video is a commercial for Banco Sabadell, a Spanish banking corporation.

Pug "Wrecking Ball" Costume

Tottie the pug is more of a hip hop fan. But this year, her owner, McKenna, dressed her as the wrecking ball from Miley Cyrus’s controversial music video “Wrecking Ball.” Yes, Barbie is nude. But, then, so was Miley Cyrus.

This costume secured Tottie the $25,000 grand prize from Petco’s annual Halloween costume contest.
