Aurora, Illinois Is Celebrating The 25th Anniversary Of Wayne's World In A Big Way

2017 marks the 25th anniversary of Wayne's World, the most excellent SNL movie adaptation of all time, and nobody is celebrating the anniversary like Wayne & Garth's home town of Aurora, Illinois.

In fact, Aurora is celebrating Wayne's World for six months straight, starting in February and ending on the fourth of July with the largest mass headbanging session ever- to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", naturally.

(YouTube Link)

The event started off on February 3rd at First Fridays, "a monthly celebration of art, music, and culture" where guests were encouraged to wear their Wayniest and Garthiest attire for some righteous fun, including:

Santori Public Library, 101 S. River St., is open with several Wayne’s World activities including Stan Makita’s Donut Shop, “Take a Shot at Wayne and Garth” (goalie shots in the Atrium), Two Minutes of Excellent Fame: Don a Wayne or Garth wig, hat, glasses, flannel, and video a line from the movie. Flannel Impromptu Art Gallery: “WW’s Fashion Strut & Selfie.” 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The 7 Wonders of the Solar System

You've heard of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, but as we learn more about our universe, the more we find things to make your jaw drop. Its a pity so few people know about them. In 1999, the magazine Astronomy named 7 Wonders of the Solar System. Let's take a look at one of them.

Imagine a mountain that soared so high Everest was a mere blip beside it. A peak so wide that the entire United Kingdom could vanish within its sprawling, impossible mass. A mountain that had its peak permanently outside its planet’s atmosphere, so high no clouds could ever reach it. Welcome to Olympus Mons on Mars, the largest peak known to man.

A long-dead shield volcano, Mons sits on the Martian equator, surrounded by other volcanoes hundreds of times larger than anything on Earth. The cones abruptly rise from a flat, desolate plain, suddenly looming 16 miles into the sky, dominating everything around them. Their size is almost beyond comprehension. Olympus Mons alone could swallow the US State of Arizona whole. Its weight is so vast that it has caused the Martian crust to subside, leaving a strange ‘moat’ around Mons a staggering 2 km deep.

And that's just one of the seven! Urban Ghosts tells us about all of the 7 Wonders of the Solar System, plus three more that should have been included.

Glitch in the Matrix

Is the same guy time-traveling and trying to avoid meeting himself? Or did the replicator stop sorting people into different spaces properly? Just how did three bald white guys in bright blue polo shirts and glasses end up catching up on work at the same cafe? My theory is that it’s a hot place, so they all shaved their heads (which is right, it’s Bangkok), and they work at the same nearby company that has a dress code and won’t give their tech guys a private office. This Impressive Supercut Shows Why Props Matter

Hollywood is currently experiencing a philosophical split between those who believe in the power of practical fx and those who don't see the problem with going full digital.

Many of the full digital filmmakers don't think it's worth the time and effort to create costumes, makeup effects and props when they can just hire digital artists to fake it all.

But, as everyone who saw X-Men Origins: Wolverine knows, real props can mean the difference between a believable effect and a glaringly obvious fake.

Why Props Matter from Rishi Kaneria on Vimeo.

Filmmaker Rishi Kane put this impressive supercut together to demonstrate the power of the humble prop, which should be required viewing for filmmakers who think digital props will ever replace the real deal.

A Supercut Of 70s And 80s Movie References Found In Stranger Things

If you're a fan of all the fantastic sci-fi and other genre movies that came out in the 1980s then you will really enjoy the new Netflix series Stranger Things.

Here's the official blurb, so as not to spoil the series for you:

This thrilling Netflix-original drama stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 -- inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. When Joyce's 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl.

If you haven't seen the show yet you may not want to watch this supercut of references to movies from the 70s and 80s found in Stranger Things because it contains spoilers.

But make sure you come back after you've watched the show!

References to 70-80's movies in Stranger Things from Ulysse Thevenon on Vimeo.

French journalist Ulysse Thevenon edited this side-by-side comparison supercut together for our edification, and even though the references were obvious it only added to the overall vibe of the show in my opinion.

This Hilarious Video Sums Up Every Japanese RPG Ever

There's a reason Japanese roleplaying games are set apart from the rest- it all starts with a character who doesn't talk, typically with spiky hair and extremely fashionable clothing.

Then we encounter some pointless expositional dialogue while running around a town that's all blocked off for some reason before being railroaded to the tragic event cutscene that begins our quest. And then we get to the naming...

This expertly pixelated video from CollegeHumor truly encapsulates all the sameness found in Japanese role-playing games, and for some strange reason it really made me want to play Chrono Cross again...

Bruce Lee Demonstrates His Superhuman Striking Speed

Bruce Lee is still considered one of the undisputed masters of martial arts, and countless fighters, athletes and other physical folks have been inspired to take it to the limit by the mighty Bruce.

His biggest strengths were his incredible speed and knowledge of striking, which made Bruce more than a match for fighters twice his size, but you really have to see his speed to believe it.

Don't Let The Captain America Persona Fool You, Chris Evans Is One Crazy Guy

(Image Link)

Captain America is one straight-laced sir, but the guy who plays him in the Marvel films, Chris Evans, is a strangeoid, a goofball and, when he's feeling particularly squirrely during an interview, a bit of a sicko.

(Image Link)

Now nobody's expecting Chris to act like Cap in Civil War, but the more you see of Chris the more it seems like he's trying to get himself recast as the Joker in the next Batman movie.

(Image Link)

It's refreshing to see someone famous acting like a total maniac for reasons other than to get out of a contract or get on TMZ, but Chris is so *on* all the time he may just be off his meds...

Highly Successful Professor Publishes a Résumé of His Failures

Johannes Haushofer is a full-time professor at Princeton University. So by academic standards, he's tremendously successful.

But he wants his students to understand that the journey to success is filled with failure after failure. He wants them to encounter defeat, overcome it, and keep moving forward. So he made a curriculum vitae (a type of résumé that academics use) listing all of the failures in his career that he can think of.

Haushofer explained his perspective to the Washington Post:

“Most of what I try fails, but these failures are often invisible, while the successes are visible,” Haushofer writes. “I have noticed that this sometimes gives others the impression that most things work out for me. As a result, they are more likely to attribute their own failures to themselves, rather than the fact that the world is stochastic, applications are crapshoots, and selection committees and referees have bad days.”

Do you have a long list of failures? Good. That means that you're trying:

Haushofer adds that if his CV of failures seems short, it’s probably because he’s forgetting some things. And a longer CV of failures could very well be a good thing – it might mean the person is good at trying new things.

Why the Wingdings Font Exists

You may have had some fun in your early days of computing playing with the Zapf Dingbats font. Type something, convert it, and voila! You have a “code” of sorts. Then the internet grew and you had better things to do with your computer. But dingbats are way older than the internet, and there was a real use for them.

(YouTube link)

When typographers, engineers, and calligraphers got together to create computer fonts, there was still a purpose for dingbats, webdings, or wingdings. See, they aren’t a code for letters, but a language all their own. Read more about the history of the decorative fonts at Vox. -Thanks, Phil Edwards!

The Sound Effects Genius Behind The Looney Tunes And Merrie Melodies

Back in the good old days of showbiz, sound effects were created by foley artists who made a racket and recorded their sounds right on the spot, without any digital help or enhancement.

And when it came to cartoon sound effects there was one man who made that madcap racket we all know and love from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoons- Tregoweth Edmond "Treg" Brown.

Treg Brown started his career as a sound editor for the Warner Brothers in 1936, and under his guidance the iconic Looney Tunes cartoon sound took shape.

From the subtle inclusion of sound effects in orchestral scores to the hiring of iconic voice actors like Mel Blanc, Treg is the guy responsible for it all.

This wonderful documentary celebrates the life of, and contributions made by, show sound legend Treg Brown, one of the unsung heroes in the Looney Tunes cartoon legacy.

Two Drunk Irishmen Moving a Couch is Strangely Entertaining

YouTube Link

When these two obviously inebriated Irishmen decide to move a couch in their impaired state, it might not be the most intelligent decision. It does bring smiles to the faces of observers, however. Don't give up, guys! (Maybe another beer would boost morale.)

Contains NSFW language, which most of us will not be able to decipher anyway.
