The Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon is not the only television marathon happening this Labor Day Weekend. Interesting Pile has a list of the marathons various television networks will be running. Take your pick! I'm not familiar with all of them, but it seems the oldest is Star Trek: The Next Generation. Link (via Fark)

During the Cold War, the Unites States and the Soviet Union raced to see who would reach the moon first. But they also competed going the other way -drilling down through the earth. Both countries wanted to bore all the way through the Earth's crust to reach the mantle. The Soviets went down seven miles, and dug the earth's deepest hole.

At the Kola Institute, pictured, the Russians drilled for more than 15 years to reach a crust depth of 40,226 feet, a record that's never been broken. But however successful the mission was as an exploration, the geological findings from the site remain murky and obscured by the way they emanated out of the fading Soviet scientific machine.
Stanford geologist and drilling expert, Mark Zoback, said that the Kola borehole was "an anomaly" even within the rather grandiose field of superdeep drilling projects.

Michael Weiss-Malik works for Google. They don't normally announce when the Street View vehicles will be out, but they did once to allow people to line up and get their pictures taken. Matt took advantage of this to "upgrade" his proposal to Leslie. She had already said yes, but this gives her something for the scrapbook! See the result on Google Maps. The studies revealed that millions of years ago, penguins, snow seals and koalas ruled the earth. For sustenance, they feasted upon whales, dolphins, and other sea mammals to the point of near extinction. But the Narwhal went into hiding beneath the ice of the North Pole, biding their time, planning their revenge and sharpening their tusks. Finally, they re-emerged, tusks gleaming with newfound magical power, and fought back against the adorable creatures that threatened their existence. The battle was long, and many Narwhal were lost, but their strong will and sharp tusks were enough to stave off the cute ones temporarily.

An alien species has been invading Britain for over 100 years, and they were just now noticed. They are snails!
The snails are tiny, only about a centimeter in length. Link -via Digg
For the past 110 years, a colony of snails has managed to crawl unnoticed from an imported stone balustrade brought from Italy in the 1890s, to claim a piece of British territory up to the terrace of the house just 27m (88ft) away.
A National Trust volunteer spotted the snails while cleaning some statues in the garden. It was the first time that anyone had realised that the Mediterranean mollusc had managed to establish a bridgehead into Britain – at the dizzy pace of about 25cm a year.
