This hits home. I cannot tell you how many times I've volunteered to take someone to the airport, and how many people have volunteered to make an airport run for me. Where I live, that means at least a three-hour round trip. And it was just this week that I was "gifted" way more zucchini than I could ever use, so I handed off some to my SIL, more than she could ever use. At the same time, I understand how the gift of privacy is the most valuable thing one can offer to a city dweller.

I don't have a problem with her method of measuring, use whatever works. However, if you have to drain your rice, it's either not done or you've used too much water. And I cannot cook rice without rinsing it first, no matter how many people tell me it's not necessary.

Yeah, the terms kind of morphed in usage after the fall of the Soviet Bloc. Since then, people say First World when they mean rich countries, and Third World when they mean poor countries (you don't hear Second World much). However, while the US is still a "rich country," that doesn't take into account our extreme inequalty.
