I well recall using one when my grandma's house got electricity. My young uncles were proud of the little contraption they came up with that would toast bread. It would be an antique now, but they probably tore it up in no time.
So you're trying to tell us these are photographs? Okay. I went to the link, and they still look like illustrations to me, except there's one closeup where you can see the guy's eyelashes. The "behind the scenes" page seems to be borked. Honestly, I'd like to see the guy's body without paint...
That seems more likely, especially with the language. I've seen cats painted with food coloring. My kids want to do it to our white cat, but I can imagine her rolling around on the furniture before it dries.
