The United States has one of the world’s largest pay gaps, with chief executives earning nearly 300 times what the average worker makes, according to some economists’ estimates. That is much higher than the 20-to-1 ratio recommended by Gilded Age magnates like J. Pierpont Morgan and the 20th century management visionary Peter Drucker.
Once I was driving to work at 5AM, and listening to the DJ before me announce that a woman had just called in to report she'd hit a deer and gave the location. He (the DJ) spoke as if it were a traffic hazard announcement, but I could picture a whole slew of good old boys heading down there with their chainsaws to retrieve fresh meat.
My children attended a parochial school that was a boarding school when I was young. The huge, ivy-covered original building was 100 years old, and was condemned a few years back. I got to see it inside when they sold off their furniture. It was grand and ornate and quite haunting. I so wish that it could have been saved, but the cost of making it safe was outrageous, so it was torn down.
