Cat Croissants

Miss Insomnia Tulip of the bakery Lou Lou P's Delights bakes works of art. In the past we've seen loaves of bread that look like cats and pugs and David Hasselhoff naked, as well as a chocolate eclair that looks like Burt Reynolds naked.

Now, continuing in her theme of unsettlingly cute breads, she brings us croissants that look like cats. Yes, I know what the top one is doing.

Police Officer Gets Shot While on Traffic Stop, But Still Issues Ticket

Nizaam Alexander, a police officer in Cape Town, South Africa, is not one to let a little annoyance like getting shot in the back distract him from his duties. If he pulls over a driver for a traffic violation, that driver is getting a ticket.

The entire incident was caught on Officer Alexander's car's dashboard camera. He pulled over a driver. While talking to him, another man passing by pulled out his gun and tried to rob Alexander. The officer tried to flee, but the man shot him in the back.

Alexander returned fire and called for backup. What happened to the assailant is unclear from current news reports. But Officer Alexander promptly finished writing a ticket for the driver (auto-start video). Then he went to the hospital for treatment.

Man with Stage IV Bone Cancer Rescues Neighbor from Burning House

(Photo: KTIV)

Dennis Kucia of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin says that he doesn't have the strength to "open a pickle jar." That's because he's now fighting stage IV bone cancer only after recovering from throat cancer 10 years ago.

Nonetheless, when Kucia's duplex caught on fire, his work wasn't done after he successfully escaped. He saw that his neighbor hadn't made it out. So Kucia hobbled inside on his crutches. He found his neighbor on the floor, surrounded by flames. Kucia dropped his crutches, grabbed the man by his collar, and dragged him out of the house.

Kucia then went to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. KTIV talked to Kucia about what motivates him:

"Ten, fifteen more seconds he would have been done, because the flames were shooting across. He was laying down flat trying to get out," says Kucia. "He's got one leg, he couldn't do it."

Kucia was hesitant to share his story, but decided it was a way to acknowledge those who helped he and his family during the fire.

The officers, firefighters and Red Cross volunteers helped him and six others inside the home.

Kucia says they give him hope, to help him fight off the cancer long enough to see his new grandchild the family is expecting in four months.

"I want that baby. I want to hold that baby. That's what I want to do. That's why I'm trying to keep going."

How to Eat a Bottle of Coke

What's happening in this freaky picture? No one has cut into a bottle of Coca-Cola and missed making a mess. Rather, this is a clever craft by Instructables member Morena DIY. She used a Coke bottle to make a gelatin mold, then added the original label and cap. Her recipe calls for Coke, unflavored gelatin, and scotch.

It's a neat trick. You can read how to make your own here.

There's something arresting about the surreal work of Luqman Reza. The Indonesian artist, who also goes by the name Jongkie, explores inner fantasy worlds in watercolors that explode with vivid pastel colors and swirling forms that almost move in front of your eyes.

Medieval Combat MMA Is Amazing

(Video Link)

Two men go into the ring wearing medieval plate armor and blunted swords. Then they try to beat each other into submission. It's full contact with full steel.

This is Knight Fighting, a sport within the Russian M-1 Global mixed martial arts league. It's emerging in the US, too. USA Knights promotes the sport here.

But the Russians are leading the sport internationally. So to compete, we Americans really need to start training a large pool of fighters--perhaps only 1% of whom will be natural champions--from elementary school on. Make it a school sponsored sport, like volleyball and track.

Caffeinated Toothpaste Will Jolt You Awake in the Morning

(Photo: Power Toothpaste)

You gotta get up. No one wants to, but we all have to. Some caffeine helps. Yes, I'll have coffee, please. But if that's not enough, then there's a new product in development that will make the morning process easier. Power Toothpaste is infused with caffeine, so it wakes you up as you brush your teeth.

But that's not why entrepreneur Dan Meropol invented it. He was just looking for a way to encourage people to brush more. Meropol reasoned that a rush of caffeine would reward users for brushing their teeth in the morning. A Daily Mail article from last November explains:

After learning that only half of Americans floss daily and half of Americans only brush once per day, Mr Meropol set out to find a way to get people to take better care of their teeth.

Mr Meropol spoke to his friend Ian about the problem he was trying to solve - and Ian suggested a caffeinated toothpaste.

Mr Meropol says his friend was shocked to find that there was not already a caffeinated toothpaste on the market, and began formulating and perfecting what would become Power Toothpaste.

If People Talked to Their Bosses Like Kids Talk to Their Parents

(Video Link)

Laurel Coppock, Molly Erdman, and  Megan Grano are members of the comedy troupe The BreakWomb--a collection of moms who riff on momming. They like to show what the parenting experience would be like if the roles were changed, such as if moms talked to each other the way they talk to their kids.

In this sketch, The BreakWomb is joined by guest stars Dan Bakkedahl, Ryan Tweedy, and Carrie Weisberg. It's time for the staff meeting. Don, the supervisor, wants the little brats to set quarterly goals for themselves. Watch the video. You may have a snack after you watch the video.

Deep Fried Peanut Butter Balls

Amy of the marvelous food blog Oh, Bite It understands that everything is better after it's been deep fried. In the past, she's deep fried bacon-covered Oreos, an entire Thanksgiving dinner, candy corn, and tequila

Her most recent project advances the science of deep frying even further. It's a remarkably simple recipie. Amy wrapped globs of peanut butter in canned crescent roll dough, fried them, then sprinkled on powdered sugar. Yummy!

Dad Builds Hyperrealistic Star Trek Playset for His Son

You're looking at a photo of the bridge set from the original Star Trek, right?

Wrong. It's a playset that David Weiberg built for his 8-year old son. Everything is scaled perfectly with the original shapes and colors. Even the console controls are accurate.

It's an amazing build for a child who is fortunate enough to be raised in the classics. He's become a fan of the original series and enjoys using his playset--along with his father's original series action figures--for imaginative play. You can see more photos at Instructables.

Bark'N'Borrow: A Dog-Sharing Service

(Photo: Bark'N'Borrow)

I've been saying for about 20 years that there's certain to be a market for a dog rental service. After all, dogs are awesome, but not everyone is in a position to get a dog. Do you like spending time with dogs? Would you be willing to pay for it?

And that's where the kibble starts pouring in.

That hasn't happened yet, but we're getting close. Bark'N'Borrow is a new app-based business that lets people spend time with dogs by borrowing them. Maya Kosoff of Business Insider signed up and wrote about her experience.

After exchanging a set of messages and emails with his owner, I met up with Charles in a park near my apartment. I was a little nervous — I wasn't really sure what to expect at a dog meet-up. Charles, his owner, and I went for a walk together and it was surprisingly fun. But don't feel like you're limited to meeting up with a dog and its owner — once you establish a level of comfort and trust with a dog owner, you can actually borrow their dog for an overnight or for a few hours. It's up to the two of you. It might not be a service for everyone, but it's essentially the sharing economy ... for dogs. If you can't have a dog yourself for whatever reason and want to feel like you do, Bark'N'Borrow is probably the most convenient way to do it.

The World's Smallest Disco Is the Size of a Phone Booth

That's because it is a phone booth. Teledisko is a full-service discotheque in a tiny, refurbished phone booth. From the outside, select your music. Then you and your friends step inside. There's a stereo, a mirror ball, strobe lights, and a fog machine. The booth has a built-in camera that prints out photos of your party when you're done.

It's a nifty art project, but I could also see Teledisko succeeding as a business. Large parties could rent one as a gimmick. Check out this video to see the appeal:
