Tricks Grocery Stores Use to Get You to Buy More

Grocery stories aren't just in the business of selling people the every day basics they need, they're ultimately there to make money. That's why they use some very clever tricks to get people to buy more than they need and to buy things they don't actually need in the first place.

So how do they do it? Well, they use a lot of tricks, including pumping delicious smells like fresh baked bread into the air so you buy more impulsively, putting complimentary items like peanut butter and jelly next to one another so you always buy both at the same time, and spreading the items people buy most often throughout the store so you always have to walk through all the aisles to get what you need.

You can get hip to all these tricks by reading this interesting TopTenz list.

How Would Xenomorphs Wear Hats?

The people of the internet love fighting over stupid things that have no definitive answer, particularly things like if dogs wore pants, how would they wear them? Along the same lines, but even nerdier is the question of if xenomorphs wore hats, how would they wear them? Twitter user Ray :D offers some interesting options in the illustration above, but he does miss the double hat option provided by Nerd Approved:

What do you guys think is the most rational answer (and don't miss the really fancy version at Nerd Approved)?

New Yorkers Find a Clever Work-Around to Subway Dog Carrier Laws

We previously talked about how New York created a law requiring all dogs on the subway to be in a carrier -and how clever residents just started carrying extra large bags to get around the law.

Over on PetsLady, you can see some truly delightful images of ways people have skirted the law including this pooch in an Ikea bag because I guess the law didn't specify that the dog's legs have to be inside the carrier with it.

Even when the carriers holding the pooches aren't preposterous, the results can be pretty precious. You never know where you might spot a cute little face looking back at you.

So check out the full gallery of hilarious "pet carrier" photos from the New York subway

This Pikachu USB Plug is A Little Kinky

On paper, the idea of a Pikachu USB plug that fits into the wall with his ears is a good one, but not when you decide to put the USB port directly across from his ears. No matter which side you look at, there is something not right about this USB plug...

As Nerd Approved points out, that's not the only problem with the plug, there's also the whole being terrible for children thing as it encourages them to put random things in outlets and has very easy-to-swallow ear covers. Sure it may be designed for adults, but there's no denying that the design will appeal to kids who hopefully won't play with it in the wrong way.

Now You Can Stay Alive With the Dance Floor From Saturday Night Fever

Even if you never actually saw Saturday Night Fever, you have no doubt seen clips or images of John Travolta disco dancing his butt off on that red, blue and yellow dance floor that syncs with the music. The floor was built specifically for the movie and now it's up for auction. It's estimated that the floor will pull in up to $1.5 million, so if you can pony up that kind of cash, you could just bring that bad boy home and finally live out your dreams to the beat of the Bee Gees.

You can read more about the floor and the upcoming auction at Me TV.

This Dog's Tongue is Begging to be Photoshopped

This dog was born with a majestically wonderful tongue and a sweet face. Redditor ilovetuckamer recognized the dog's potential as a Photoshop Battle supermodel and he rightfully uploaded it to Reddit.

Not long after, the pooch starred in his own Dali painting.

He also went gangsta.

He even became the world's cutest silly snake.

Some Redditors were particularly nice to the pooch -even giving him his own tasty meat snacks.

See all of the hilarious Photoshops over at Reddit.

Women Share the Craziest Thing People Said to Them While They Were Pregnant

Image: Baby on Board by Albo

Earlier this year, Buzzfeed asked their readers what the most messed up thing people said to them while they were pregnant and the 22 ones they selected really are eye opening. If you think it's weird for random strangers to rub your belly just because you have a bump, you won't believe what some of these people have said. A few highlights:

"Paraphrasing a coworker when I announced I was eight weeks along: 'Oh you're not really pregnant until you're 12 weeks. Before that, you'll probably lose it anyway.'"

Or there's always:

"I had a much older co-worker say to me, 'You must be having a girl, you’ve gotten very ugly. You see, when you’re carrying a girl she takes away your looks for herself.' I nodded, then cried in the bathroom for ten minutes."

Neatorama Readers Share Their Worst Stories About Doctors

Image: Doctor Green by Gualda Trazos

Most people have had a bad doctor experience at one point or another, but it's one thing to have a doctor who doesn't know everything about your condition and another thing to have a doctor totally misdiagnose a common condition that puts your life at risk. Over on the Neatorama Facebook, we recently asked our readers what their worst experiences with doctors were and some of the answers were truly shocking. A few highlights:

I had 4 doctors tell me that I just needed to suck up my menstrual cramps and stop being such a baby. One finally listened and said "how do you even walk? You have the worst cases of endometriosis and adenomyosis I've ever seen. Your uterus is 6 times larger than the average healthy uterus. We can take it out for you".

Or:

Told I had an extra vertebrae in my back..took the x-ray to another doctor and a 4 inch bone tumor was clearly visible!

Another bad one:

I came to him crying because I was dealing with chronic pain from endometriosis and PCOS. He suggested that I "just get pregnant". Clearly he didn't realize getting pregnant with both of those things was damn near impossible. And he was an OB/GYN.

And then there was this one:

I had a doctor refuse to give me a repeat prescription for my asthma medication because they insisted I could cure it by only eating soup. Not even any specific type of soup, just "soup".

Check out all the horrible answers here and feel free to share more of your own stories in the comments.

Artist Installs Pug Peeing Statue Next to Fearless Girl Statue

Remember when the creator of the Wall Street bull threatened to sue the city of New York and the creators of the Fearles Girl statue because he thought it made his artwork look bad? Well today artist Alex Gardega made a strong point about how one artwork can affect another by installing a peeing dog statue beside the Fearless Girl.

Unsurprisingly, critics complained that his work was sexist, but Gardega defended his work as a critique of the corporate sponsor that was responsible for putting up the Fearless Girl statue (yes, she wasn't made by a pro-woman artist, but as an advertisement by Wall Street corporation State Street).

"I decided to build this dog and make it crappy to downgrade the statue, exactly how the girl is a downgrade on the bull," he added.

Gardega took down the statue less than a day after putting it up, noting that he didn't even bolt it to the ground and that viewers damaged the dog's leg. He says he intends to put it back up after repairing it and that he eventually plans to sell it on his website for $10.

Wish You Could Own a Castle in Italy? Here's Your Chance

Want to own a medieval castle but don't want to spend the cash? Well, you're in luck! Now you can own a castle, post office or other historical building in Italy and all you have to do is revitalize it -well, technically, you have to submit a plan for revitalizing your histoical building and have it approved by the Italian government. Either way though, if you're approved, that building is yours for free and you have nine years to implement the changes you proposed. The plan is a clever way to help improve a number of historic buildings located across Italy and drive tourism back to those destinations, so it's a win/win for the government and new property owners.

You can read more about the program on Travel and Leisure and you can see the available properties here (though the site is in Italian)
