Before I give my answer, maybe this should be turned into a contest? What quirky contest could you win if the rules were something like "memorize a long list of nonsense words and arrange them in an arbitrary way to score points."
I have very strong feeling on this subject. To keep it short, I am leaving out personal choices and sticking to two topics: Math and Life Skills. Math needs to be way accelerated. Skip Geometry. Algebra early. College level calculus senior year. Students can opt out after basic algebra. Life skills should be taught even if it is as lame as the Health classes I took on junior high.
Back then computer hardware was much more reliability. The original IBM PC was built to a standard that achieved a mean-time-to-failure of 20 years. This is mainly due to pin-in-hole technology and low density silicon.
