The Google Street View Prank

Alex

When Ben Kinsley and Robin Hewlett of Carnegie Mellon University found out that Google Street View is coming to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the duo arranged a more "interesting" view of the street: they staged a marathon, a parade, a mad-scientist laboratory, and even a sword fight!

National Geographic Magazine's Intelligent Travel Blog has the story: Link [with embedded YouTube clip] | The Google Street View of Sampsonia Way - Thanks Marilyn!

Melting Man Wants YOU to Fight Global Warming

Alex

Photo: Red Cross of Argentina

This is a pretty clever guerilla marketing by the Argentinian Red Cross: a "melting" man passing out fliers urging spectators in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to fight global warming.

Flight of the Conchords Invite Fans to Lip Dub

Alex

Oh, how I love Flight of the Conchords. The crazy genius New Zealand duo are at it again ... and this time, you're all invited.

All you have to do is learn the lyrics of "Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros" and video yourself lip-synching the song. The best video clips will be edited together to make a "Fansterpiece" that will air on their show on HBO.

Google Zeitgeist 2008

Alex

We posted about Yahoo's top searches of 2008 before on Neatorama. Well, Google has just released its 2008 Year-End Zeitgeist, and the results couldn't be any different.

Here are the highlights from Google searches from around the world in 2008:

1. sarah palin
2. beijing 2008
3. facebook login
4. tuenti
5. heath ledger
6. obama
7. nasza klasa
8. wer kennt wen
9. euro 2008
10. jonas brothers

I had to look up tuenti (a Madrid-based social networking website, referred to many as the "Spanish Facebook"), nasza klasa (a Polish social networking website), and wer kennt wen (ditto, this time for Germans).

Classroom Lecture Musical Prank

Alex

Now this is a clever and entertaining classroom prank: here's Reach! A lecture musical prank by Prangstgrüp, starring Mike Barry with lyrics by Brian Jacobs. Even Prof. James Valentini, who teaches chemistry at Columbia College was amused.

Hero Dog Risked Life to Save Another Dog

Alex

This went 'round the Web about a few days ago, but I just found out about it: here's a YouTube clip of a dog risking its life to save its friend who was ran over by a car.

Translation: "These images seen from the surveillance cameras show a very common situation with our overpopulated highways. It is normal for us to see dogs run over. In the video, we can see this dog fighting for his life because he was run over by the vehicle.

"What is very touching is to see the very heroic actions of this other dog who is trying to pull him to the side of the highway. We are going to keep seeing things like this until we find a solution to the dogs living on the streets."

Bill Gardner's Christmas Cards

Alex

Every year since 1987, Bill Gardner of Gardner Design and LogoLounge designed a unique Christmas card for Aspen Boutique. These cards are fantastic - and a work of art unto themselves.

Reuben Miller has the interview with Bill and a gallery of this and previous year's Christmas cards: Link - Thanks Rueben!

Dance of the Sugar Plum "Furry" by the Switch Zoo Critter Chorus

Alex

Remember the Christmas Song "sung" (lipsynched, really) by animals clip we just posted on Neatorama?

Well, that has nothing on this: here's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" from The Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky, arranged by Guy Spataford and created from the sounds of the 27 animals of The Switch Zoo Critter Chorus.

Check it out, it's fantastic! Link [embedded Google Video] - Thanks Guy!

What the Animals Want for Christmas

Alex

It's 15 days to Christmas, so here's a Christmas song, "sung" by animals from the BBC's Breathing Places. It's kind of creepy and cute - crute?- at the same time.

Bad Wig and Ugly Track Suit Walk

Alex

I'm not sure why, but every year, there is an unusual New Year's Day tradition in Seattle, Washington: The Bad Wig and Ugly Track Suit Walk.

All you have to do to participate is don the ugliest wig and track suit you have tucked away in your closet somewhere (I'm sure you have 'em) and walk around Green Lake.

Hey, it's easier than putting on a zombie make up! Link - Thanks Marlow Harris!

Things Bears Love

Alex

Matthew Inman, the creator of such gems as 10 Reasons to Date a Unicorn and 9 Reason NOT to Date a Tyrannosaurus (previously on Neatorama), just told us of his latest project: Things Bear Love. As his other microsites, this one is most definitely worth checking out: Link - Thanks Matthew!

World's Heaviest Potato

Alex

Lebanese farmer Khalil Semhat dug up what is probably the world's heaviest potato:

"This giant weighs 11.3 kilos (24.9 pounds)," Khalil Semhat told the AFP news agency at his farm near Tyre, 85 kilometres (50 miles) south of Beirut.

"I've been working the land since I was a boy, and it's the first time I've seen anything like it." Mr Semhat, 56, said he had to ask for help from a friend to get the huge vegetable out of the ground.

He insisted that he had used no fertilizer or other chemicals to produce it.

We're still looking for the world's heaviest couch potato: Link - Thanks Jez!
