From the article, I gathered that it was the combination of both severe weather events and warfare that did the Mayans in.

The Mayans had been in war with each other for a long, long time - and the population managed to grow even with the "bloodthirsty savage" qualities. It was the combination of this AND severe draught (plus deforestation) that collapsed the ancient Mayan civilization.

Severe weather events do happen throughout history - even without significant contribution from human activities back then - but one thing should be clear: we're going to see a higher frequency of severe weather events due to changes in climate triggered by human activities since the industrial revolution.

Lunch cost $1.50 at Chula Vista elementary school, so I doubt that the parents can't afford to pay. Many people are just deadbeats.

The school did try other things to try to get them to pay. The cheese sandwich of shame is the last resort.

I will grant you that the kids suffer, but at least they're still being fed something "federally nutritious."

Michael Crichton, talented that he is as a writer, is not a reliable source for global warming arguments, see: Answers to Key Questions Raised by M. Crichton in State of Fear.

Most of the arguments against global warming had been cherry picking of data. Overall, there is no scientific doubt that there is a change in the earth's weather and mean temperature, and that we're going to see more extremes in weather events (be it cooling or heating).
