I had the good fortune to see some of his pieces at the Device Gallery in La Jolla CA this summer. Really beautiful and intricate work. The one entitled "Deer" was particularly mesmerizing.

Pretty much everyone is at risk for something expensive. Women could ring up higher bills because we live longer. Childbearing is expensive. Some people have genes that predispose them to cancer - should they be charged more after a positive PSA or brca1 test? Where does it end? Should ugly people get a discount since they're at lower risk for STDs? I totally agree with wellness programs that encourage healthy behaviors, but the whole point of health insurance is risk pooling.

I agree with lowering the drinking age to 18. Most kids are still living at home around the time they turn 18, so there's at least someone in their lives whose job it is to watch out for them. After that age, a lot more young people are on their own, in college, or otherwise out from under the watchful eye of their parents.

Roger, plagued for years with excessive self-esteem, followed his doctor's orders to stand one hour a day outside the one place where he knew he'd be the butt of every Internet hipster's keen wit and bile. It was cheaper than meds, but he missed his lunch hour.

So they expect one day Shanghai will be "finished" and there won't be hundreds of cranes? That's one of the first things you notice there - how many construction cranes there are.

We're just hearing one side of this of course, but to me it sounds like they should have been more polite about kicking them off the plane. "How about we just book you guys on a later flight so he has a chance to get this out of his system, mm-kay?" I hope this kid's mom can have a discussion with their pediatrician about safe ways to help them fly again if they need to do so - there's got to be some kid-friendly Valium that's safe for occasional use.

My dad used to do this at the library at the university where he worked. He subscribed to the Journal of Irreproducible Results and printed labels that looked like the library's. He would bring in his issues and leave them on the appropriate shelf in the current journals room. I don't think the library paid to bind them when the year ended...
