Dave 20's Comments

Vandalism? Not necessarily. It all depends on how aggressive the adhesive is and what the label is made of. If done right, it'd peel right off. And if done right, it'd be there forever.

Leave it to the way-too-happy yellow dot. My wife has seen similar inconsistencies at Sam's Club, where buying in bulk is naturally more economical, right?

I once went to a local big-box lumber store to buy some nails for a project. I needed about five pounds, but noticed that the 1lb boxes sold for 99 cents, and the 5lb for $5.99. Guess which way I went?

Quite a bargain, buying in bulk.

@Neatoramawontsendmeapassword: "Okay, Dave. Let’s keep burning oil. I’m sure the athletes in China right now who have to wear face masks due to the pollution will be very glad you’ve decided this for them."

Internal combustion engines is the least of the problems China faces when it comes to pollution.

@sparge: "but what does the greenhouse effect have to do with abiogenesis of petroleum?"

The current drive in politics is to wean us off petroleum-based energy, and the global warming — or is it global climate change now? — "crisis" is driving that. The peak oil theory — we're going to run out of oil someday — is being used to reinforce the need to move away from oil. So if the abiogenic petroleum origin hypothesis is true, we're not going to run out, which removes one of the scare tactics from the global warming crowd's arsenal.

Another aspect of the abiogenic petroleum origin hypothesis you mentioned in #2 is that it's an ongoing process. The thing that caused Russian scientists to look into it in the first place is that oil wells that were thought to have been depleted would suddenly go back into production.

It's even happened in wells in the US, but the theory still gets pooh-poohed by scientists here because they seem to be so sold on the "carbon emissions = death of the planet" thinking.

Just think; if #2 is true, #10 is moot.

"It just seems like people are waiting for every little opportunity to bring up certain topics."

Not the case at all. Any story that deals with child abuse & neglect has a natural connection with the abortion issue. It's odd and disturbing to me that people get all upset when they see a neglected kid like Dani but don't give a thought to the fact that people do much worse to kids every day in the name of "choice". Birth is not some magical moment where a child suddenly becomes a human being, so the child in the womb deserves the same protection as a kid of seven years or seven months or seven minutes. That "clump of cells" is uniquely human and as genetically different from its mother as any of us, and has been since conception. Denying that is being more than intellectually dishonest.

I don't mean to trivialize what has been done to Dani and so many other kids who suffer abuse at the hands of their parents, but what was done to Dani does seem somewhat trivial in comparison to other kids who aren't given the chance to see the light of day.

"How do you know that the people getting upset about neglected children are pro abortion?"

Sorry; I didn't explain myself well on that point. The people I know who get most upset and up in arms — not just upset but needing to see something done (preferably by the government) to prevent this sort of thing — are the ones who are most adamant about keeping the status quo with abortion "rights". Seems more than just a little incongruous.

Polx: I'm sorry you find my viewpoint so offensive; truth can be offensive. I was once on your side of this fence and can sympathize with you. I can only hope you find peace about it one day.

your_mum: Yes, it's true; women use abortions as birth control all the time. Not in the prophylactic sense, but as a backup when other methods of contraception fail, or when other methods are not used. Happens way too often.

@Neatoramawontsendmeapassword & Polx: You may point to a case like this, where, "a baby was allowed to be born who was then abused and neglected" as reason to encourage the practice of abortion to continue, but the simple fact of the matter is that the vast majority of abortions in the US are done as birth control by people who simply don't want to be inconvenienced by having a kid. And Dani is proof that even when abortion is freely available, the people who you say would benefit most from it don't take advantage of it. Sorry, but your logic and your arguments are falling apart at the seams.

The one thing I just can't figure out is how the same people that get all weepy and/or up in arms about a case like this are the same ones that get all indignant about even the suggestion of any restriction on "a woman's right to choose"; right to choose to have her children ripped limb from limb. How a society that is so focused on providing for and protecting children will allow, condone, and even contribute to the slaughter of unborn children is just so very wrong.

Very sad that people would do this to their own kids, but then again there's the whole abortion thing, so this seems less shocking by comparison.

Sad too that people see "the system" as an answer to prevent things like this from happening. How much of a nanny state do we really need or want?

News Flash: Not everything you read in the Internets is true!

Come on, Alex; we all know that Neatorama isn't real journalism, just entertainment, but could you try just a little harder to put a tiny bit of journalistic honesty into the stories you post that hint at being true? Did you even bother to check out the originating story and site, or did you just copy & paste from the Locust & Honey blog? That's sure what it looks like.

Even a little digging would've revealed that the story you linked to was satire. But no. Instead we get yet another hyped up headline on Neatorama giving the Christ haters another imagined thing to yell about.
