Stories Behind 40 Famous Company Names

Did you know that the athletic shoe brand ASICS is an acronym? The acronym stands for "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano," which means “Healthy soul in a healthy body” in Latin. The article linked below provides brief stories/explanations behind forty brand names. Some you may have heard; others, such as the ASICS acronym, you may not have. At least I didn't know it, and I'm wearing a pair of ASICS as I write this. See how many brand names that you know the story behind here.

18 Short Stories That Pack More of a Punch Than Many Novels

Charlie Anders over at i09 has compiled an interesting list of short stories that, in spite of their brevity, tend to make a mark on the psyche. As any good list of short stories does, it includes Bradbury, but also fans out to be representative of a number of different voices and tones. Here's what she has to say about Saunders' Escape from Spiderhead (text available at the link to the left):

"This one story has a lot of Saunders' most frequent concerns, but with even more creepiness and dystopian satire than usual. The main character is a test subject in a special facility, where they completely control his mind and emotions using bizarre drugs — and this leads to a lot of weirdly unsettling sex scenes. But that's just the beginning. Fiction is full of dystopias where corporations or science gone mad are controlling people, but this story still stands out for how powerfully it examines questions of what makes us who we are. But mostly, just creepy as hell. Like a lot of the stories on this list, I chose this one because it keeps bugging me."  Amazon

18 Kids Who Know Exactly What They Want to Be When They Grow Up

Source: imgur.com

Do you remember what your first answer was to the oft-presented question to youths everywhere "What do you want to be when you grow up?" It's an answer that's bound to go through many changes from year to year. While I'd be happy to hear any child answer "happy" or "a good person," that's not generally been the intent of the question. Obviously, the question is more designed to ascertain the child's vocational interests, and while that is often the type of answer these boys and girls provide in this amusing collection of responses, some delightfully deviate from the norm.

Adam West and Burt Ward on the Set of Batman, 1966

Batman
the movie was the first feature film based on the character. The 1966 film, made in the glow of enthusiasm for the 1966-1968 television series, starred most of the TV series cast. Adam West starred as Batman and Bruce Wayne, Burt Ward was Robin and Dick Grayson, Lee Meriwether was The Catwoman, Cesar Romero played The Joker, Burgess Meredith The Penguin and Frank Gorshin as The Riddler. Highbrow cinema it wasn't, but like the television show, many fans remember the cast and production as an irresistable combination of comic and camp.

This collection of photos from the set of Batman shows West, Ward and company in their caped and tighted finest, doing Batman and Robin type things, as well as other activities (like coffee breaking and making phone calls) of the non-superhero variety.

Wedding Tattoos

Image: Instagram

Some people like to live unconventionally, bucking tradition and creating new "rules"
for themselves as they go along. A number of such personalities are embracing the idea of ink on their fingers to signify their marital statuses, rather than metal and jewels. There are things to be said for going that route: it is less expensive (provided it never has to be removed) and there are no limits in terms of original design. The photos featured here are of tattoos that various wedded couples opted to wear in place of jewelry. What do you think of the practice? Would you consider such a move, or would you rather stick to ye old gold?

Long-distance runner Rosie Swale-Pope is a resident of Great Britain who is on a mission to raise awareness about cancer and to inspire people to live their lives to the fullest. She is currently making her way across America on her own two feet, running and pulling a trailer that serves as her shelter while on the road. The trailer, which she's nicknamed the Icebird, can weigh up to 300 pounds when fully stocked. Swale-Pope was prompted to begin her journey after she lost her husband to cancer. She explained,

“By the time my husband and I realized, it was too late to save him, and after he died in my arms, I felt if I stayed at home just crying and talking, who would listen to me? And I decided to run around the world.”

Swale-Pope has experience with journeys that require physical endurance. The physically fit 68-year-old has run 27 marathons and guesses that she’s run about 50,000 miles in total.
