Book Tree

Maybe I just like things made out of books, I don't know, but this seems magical to me. My obsession is a little strange though, considering I do almost all of my reading exclusively on an iPad. It's not that I really prefer eReaders to actual books, but who has time to go to the bookstore? The define and search feature aren't too shabby either.

I feel like a sellout, but I am stuck in my ways!

Animals Playing Dead

Cats can be trained? Who knew? All this time I had a cat growing up and I never taught her how to play dead. Just think of all the practical uses for that- like scaring my little sister into thinking I just killed my cat... ...I can't think of any uses beyond that right now.

A missed opportunity, what a shame.

New Profile Picture via Hurricane Sandy!

It actually took me a few seconds to see it. I am just impressed by how well he sells it. Image by Reddit user Nirnroot and only possible because of hurricane Sandy.

Hanksy's Young Puns 2: Now With More Pun

Hanksy is a rising street artist that is very popular with us here at Neatorama. I think it has to do with his very splendid visual puns. Well guess what? Hanksy is going to be in a street art event and has a new gallery show! Both are in NYC.

In an email from Krause Gallery, this statement was made

The New York Comedy Festival presents, in association with Vandalog.com, Little Italy, and Montana Cans, announced today the addition of “The Art of Comedy,” a series of events and art installations involving New York’s most talented street artists that will take place this November. “The Art of Comedy” brings together acclaimed artists Ron English, Hanksy, and Gilf! who will showcase their respective humorous works of art in an effort to bring smiles to the faces of millions of New Yorkers.

Look up more information about the event and gallery here. I am super jealous of all you New Yorkers right now.

Heart: A Short

So that was interesting. Yes this video may be strange and a little creepy, but I like it. It sort of reminds me of girlfriends past. How enveloping my battles for love seemed. How futily I tried to protect my heart. Yet little did I know, I was destined to be alone (a fact I have since reconciled with thanks to therapy and Jim Beam). What conclusions do you draw from this video?

PS. I was only kidding about the Jim Beam.

PPS. I drink whiskey.

Hello Kitty Cupcakes

Hello Kitty art isn't just limited to clothing or books - it's in food too! I love the Iron Man one, probably because Iron Man is my favorite super hero (he built his superpowers, common). What is your favorite? More here.

Sharks and Sandy

Finally, a Jersey Shore cast member I can actually relate to.

This photo was supposedly taken in New Jersey in the wake of Sandy. I would venture to guess it's a fake just on the idea that I doubt a shark would swim inland during a storm like that. As it turns out a lot of fake photographs have been floating around because of Sandy. Thankfully The Atlantic is set on verifying the truth, and debunking the fake. Unfortunately, this picture is listed as one of the few unverified. Check out some of the others though.

Update: It's a fake.

Bonus: Video of trees falling and fire due to Sandy. Warning NSFW - Language

Angry Birds Star Wars

The popular game Angry Birds is releasing a new Star Wars game on November 8th. While the official gameplay trailer isn't coming out until the 5th, you can see a preview of the game above! If you don't think Angry Birds and Star Wars make a good match, just consider the protagonists name- Luke Skywalker. Is there a better name for a force wielding bird?

Is It Time To Ban Gangnam Style?

We used to ask "Where is Ai WeiWei?" Now, we should ask "Why this, Ai WeiWei?"

Ai WeiWei, one of the most influential contemporary artists of our time, has made a Gangnam Style video. He dances like Psy and looks sort of like a fool in his pink shirt and sun glasses. This coming after the release of his Sundance spangled film Never Sorry.

I give up. Is Gangnam Style some enveloping amoeba that will consume all culture? Does this song know no bounds?

I say no more. I am tired of hearing it, and tired of writing about it.

Unfortunately it is not all up to me. Some people over here at Neatorama think that we have a duty to write about subjects our audience is interested in. Whatever. So we leave it up to you, Neatoramanauts, sink or swim? Ban it or keep it? My sanity may hang in the balance.

Ban Gangnam Style?

The Whedon Endorsement

"Geek Overlord" Joss Whedon has endorsed Mitt Romney. He makes logical points, backs up his opinion, and comes to a pragmatic conclusion. He suggests, if you want a zombie apocalypse as he does, you must vote for the Zomney.

Well played sir, well played.

Book Arch

I really am not one to get all gushy over weddings, truth be told I have actually only ever been to one I can remember and I was working it, but this gets me. An arch... made out of books.. that you can get married underneath. Why is this not the standard operating procedure for all weddings?

Check out more awesome photographs of the special day at RubinWeddings.

When Drones Strike

Well humanity, we had a good run. It's now time for the machine mutiny.

Okay, so maybe things are not that bleak. When Drones Strike Fear - would probably have been a more appropriate title. But this droning business is sort of mind boggling. The video starts off a little slow, but towards the middle it starts to get pretty interesting.

"The US Air Force is in the midst radical change, now training more drone pilots than fighter pilots." (07:00)

You can check out this article from Wired Magazine about these unmanned aerial vehicles. That, or you can just look into having them deliver you tacos.

Paragliding George Steinmetz

Photographer George Steinmetz decided the best way to get photographs of the world's most extreme deserts, was to do it by paragliding. They took some really amazing video for this production. You can also check out some of the photos at National Geographic.

My one question is about the motor strapped to his back- he even mentions it in the voice over. Does this really count as paragliding? I think the word gliding would suggest that there would be no aid to flight, just wind power. Thoughts?

Chroma Key

The amount of green screens in film (also known as Chroma keying) and television really goes unnoticed. I used to think I could spot all the places in a film that there was CG, I guess I was wrong. This video may be dated a little, but just imagine what is now possible with the technology at our disposal. Thanks to Reddit user Nuzen for bringing it to our attention, and Stargate Studios for an excellent video.

Update: Stargate Studies has a new reel, just released and embedded below. While different from their green screen work, still cool. So check it out.
