"MSG is a convenient, and culturally loaded, scapegoat for overindulgence, and a distraction from the real problem: the food system we’ve built to make it easier to produce and consume so many calories that lack everything but flavor."
Sometimes I really feel like a Luddite. Doesn't change that I think we are slowly and dangerously coming to rely too much on technology. And that's what I do for a living too.
I know people who claim that speed enforcement is all that Indiana does. Which is kind of ironic considering the Indianapolis 500 - which runs on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in Speedway, Indiana. . .
I tend to think mostly of Bourbon when I think of Kentucky. Meanwhile in Maine, we either have no originality or a weird sense of humor. I like weird. ayuh. . .
Mark Evanier, whose writings I've followed for many years, has a short piece on Gasoline Alley in his November blog. For some awesome first person history on the comics/entertainment world, check out his POV columns under the Articles section on his blog site.
Speaking of dear old "LBJ" and the Secret Service, the Prez was known to pee on his detail, so they took more than bullets and blame. Too bad this Social Media thing is only a few years old. Or maybe not.
"Ming the Merciless" and "Flash Gordon" are listed in the credits - did you see them? The dream sequence where Ralphie fights Ming with Flash was cut. . .
I had one back around 2009 named "John Smith". Was just exploring to see what all the excitement was about. Didn't like it so tried to cancel it. They wouldn't let me so I just forgot about it. A few years later my daughter's are like "So JOHN. Thought you didn't like Facebook?" "What're you talking about?" "Yeah JOHN SMITH." Busted. So this time, with a lot of effort I did cancel it. Not. Couple of years ago I get an email from them: John! Where you been? We've reset your account and all your friends are waiting... Except I never had any Facebook friends. Don't know who this dude Antonio Morales is but I get regular status updates on him. He likes a lot of pictures. Whatever.
Great article and the author nailed it with his observation of Reed Hastings' comment: “It is controversial. But nobody has to watch it.” Same as the gun lobby saying "Guns don't kill people. . ." In the business world all great and powerful companies eventually fail, either through complacency or abuse of power. That comment was arrogant and uninformed; spoken (potentially) at the height of Netflix's power. They should be careful.
Those of us who have been around for 60 years got an education that did not involve a social media feed, are mostly competent with regard to critical thinking, and can intuitively detect questionable content by going no further than an overview. At 30 years or more, a significant number of people fail at all three. It's more than critical thinking and it can be fixed, but it will take at least a generation to overcome.
-- Great article.
A Very Scary Solstice
High Five! ...GAACK!
All of these are a cut above the usual repertoire of Medieval art.
