i know electronics don't use up as much power when they are 'sleeping', I'm just saying that I doubt tthe environmental impact is that much different then when google is running a search or not. It seems like this 'research' was done just to make people feel environmentally guilty about using google.
and I do think the carbon footprint / green thing has gone way too far.
Try to track down and watch Penn and Teller's show "Bullshit" - the episode about recycling.

solving the cube with no help - in fact figuring out the 'moves' yourself, is quite an acomplishment.
Still, this has the halmarks of an unhealthy obsession. It would suck to have your life influenced so much by trying to solve that little cube.

Um, isn't google's machinery turned on and emiting CO2 and such, whether or not a search is being done?
I mean, their computers are 'impacting the environemnt' no matter what... It seems odd to me that this person is trying to imply that by doing a search, you are hurting the environment.
I seriously doubt that running a search on google makes their computers fart out a little extra CO2.

you can find milk that wont go bad in a week. Well... Perhaps that's an advantage to having a large dairy farm locally.

@ Mikee "what do I do you ask?" No, not one did. And they pretty much could guess that from the statement 'stop trying to replace virtues.'
Science isn't about replacing anything, anyhow. It's about discovering what makes everything happen how it does. Sure, companies use those results to make new things (to make money), but i guess you have to take the good with the bad. Greed and desire for power has always been a motivator for invention (as has necessity :P), but good things do come out of that sometimes.
After all, a little over 200 years ago, we didn't even have electricity. And now we're able to post on the internet, carry tiny devices that give us global directions, and share video/audio recorings in real time with people all over the world.
Considering how long humanity went without just electric light, the advances of the past 200+ astound me when I think on it.

There's an inherent problem with the way this is set up, from a psychological standpoint. The engine, by giving you back a word associate with your reply, creates as 'coloring' of what you will next say, based on the entire experience, instead of just the word. So it's not really 'word association' but 'them association' to an extent.
Justin's post illustrates this well. In word association, given the word f**ker, he'd want to reply with what came to mind given that one word as input, but instead, he had 'horse f**ker' influencing his thought.
the program should provide your next word randomly with no connection to your previous answer if they are trying to collect data on what words people associate with each other. Otherwise, their results on each word association will be 'corrupted' by each individual's previous chain. (for example, if earlier back-and-forth of "day-night-sleep-bed" will probably inspire a different next word that would "photosynthesis-leaves-flower-bed".)

giltwist - unfortunatly, even if we could pinpoint the correct physical part of the brain, that wouldn't work. Brain cells don't operate the same way as muscles cells.
Simplified: Muscles strengthen by tearing in tiny little places all over the muscle during exertion, then growing new cells to fill those holes, making the muscle bigger and stronger.
Brain cells don't do that, and brain tissure isn't designed to contract or expand. And if you somehow cause a tear between cells, new cells wouldn't grow to replace them. (Like nerve cells and spinal cells, the connection would be severed, and a large enough severence in brain cells would really mess someone up).

in my opinion - 'religions' aren't bad, but the people within them can be. Having a strong spiritual side, nomatter what you believe, I think is a good quality, unless, of course, that causes you to behave like a jerk and/or pyscho.
Hmm... Barring obvious immoral beliefs (such as "it is holy to kill children", etc...)... I guess the only religious beliiefs I'm opposed to are "If you don't believe or behave as I do, then I hate you." and any actions that a person may take as a consequence of that.
Although I'm not wiccan, I think they have an expression similar to "If it harms no one, do what thou will." :)

OMG.... Christophe stole my comment again. This is getting a bit freaky. Was gonna say "I wonder why all those old movies had particle beams aimed at the camera."
